TEXT: The focal point of this article is the description of research car-
rimd out at some of the Czechoslovak metallurgical plants, in order to find out the
reason of Amsler type soaking pit failures and how, after having found it, the miLt-
ter was to be put right. The reason of publishing this article is to familiarlso
wide circles of Polish rolling mill engineers with this interesting achievement.
This article is the reprint of a paper, read in December 1959 during a meeting of
SITPH in Katowice by S. Czernoch, Professor at the Politachhika (Polytechnical In-
stitute) in Kosice, CSR. The paper was translated by Andrzejewski, Roman, Doctor of
Engineering, deputy professor at the Akademia G6rniczo Hutnicza (Mining and Metal-
lurgical Academy) in Cracow. Some new ingot rolling mills were put into operation
in Trzyniec, Konczyce and Witkowice In 1951, together with their soaking pits built
according to the well known pattern of Amsler type pits, with two long-flame burners.
The burners were fitted above the heads of the ingots on opposite walls, but not

opposite each other. At first, three rows of Ingots were placed in the pit, tPAt
heating of them was not satisfactory. With four rows of ingots, the result was even
worse. At the plant in Trzyniec, the heating method of the soaking pit was modified
by replacing two long-flame burners by four short-flame ones; they were placed in
pairs on two opposite walls of the pit above the ingot heads, but each pair was
facing exactly the opposite pair. When so modified, the soaking pit was put into
operation and the result was astonishing. Heating of ingots was more even and, at
the same time, gas consumption dropped by 15%. Taking into consideration the fact
that more Ingots were heated in one charge, the real efficiency of the modified pit
was by 50% greater than that of the conventional Amsler type soaking pit. In order
to find the explanation for this phenomenon a hydraulic test was carried out on a
model. A scale model of the pit ( 1 : 10) was made of transparent material and tho~
flow of gas was imitated by water with rape seeds floating in it. It was found that
in the two-burner type soaking pit, the hot gas flowing above the ingot heads im-
pinged on the opposite wall and, flowing down between the wall and the outer row of
ingots, escaped througkr the exit pipes near the bottom of the pit, practically by-
-passing its centre. This explains the lack of uniformity In heating the Ingots.
The outer row of same was overheated and at the same time the lining of the pit

damaged, whilst Ingots in the central part were not hot enough. With four-burner
soaking pits the matter was found to be entirely different. Stream of hot gas flow-
ing from opposite burners clashes in the centre of the comwstion chamber above the
ingot heads and finds the escape route through the centre of the soaking pit between
all ingots and out to the exit pipes. Because of this, all ingots are evenly heated.
the refractory lining does not suffer excess overheating and the increased efficien-
cy already mentioned takes place. Simple and cheap modification of the heating sys-
tem allows for a considerable saving in gas consumption and for increase of plant

During the last 2 yr.. 20 cases of so-called pneumocystt's pneumonia in prematu.:,e
children have been examined. The macroscopical picture is well-known. Histolo.-
gical examination showed in the alveoli. besides desquamated alveolar epithelium.
a large amount of Pneumocystis carinit. with as a result hyperaemia. of the capil-
laries and oedematous imbibition ('Inflammatory reaction') In the interalveolar
septa, besides new-formation of immature calls of the myeloid and lymphatic
series ('haemopoietic reaction'). Histiocytic cells were also found. but typical
Dlasma cells were not observed.

ABSTRACT: Theories developed in the Soviet Union before and after the August 1965
Plenary Session of the Central Com~m~ttee of the Communist Party are presented and

their consequences for the economy)'are described. The article is based on publish!d
ipapers and on notes and recordings taken at lectures. New economic concepts are
ibased particularly on the proposed marketing of means of production and exchange of
loquivalent values, and acceptance of such exchange as a normal procedure in the
!socialist economy. Essential differences from exchange of consumer goods were empha-
~sized in the discussion. Means of production cannot be sold in unlimited quantity,
!no change of ownership takes place since the state remains the sole owner of such
goods, the buyer is not anonymous as in the sales of consumer goods, and no exchange-
of cash is involved in the procedure. The present organization of the Soviet supply
;system by both central and territorial apparatus and the historical development of
