lytically polished prior to the experiment. After annealing in

before and after extension. Some specimens after vacuum annealing

,grains in the polycrystalline nickel were covered with a graphite
film. The specimens with graphite on the surface contained only
0.030,, C, whilst the specimens with a bright surface contained
0.1% C. Transverse sections of both types of specimen revealed
that the grain boundaries became etched more intensively in the
specimens which rejected the graphite. The'specimens b also
produced clearer and stronger interference spots on X-ray
patterns, and in tensile tests the stress-strain curve showed a
yield plateau; their ultimate strength was somew6at lower and the
ductility somew),.at higher than for the specimens a which did
not reject the graphite. Thus, the yield plateau is observed in
commercial polycrystalline nickel if the carbon contained in it
is rejected frot.,i the solid solution, so that the intergranular
boundaries are freed from impurities and become extended. The
change in the nickel grain boundaries is caused by carbon diffusicn
and it is possible that the formation of a yield plateau can also
be caused by diffusion of other impurities. There are 3 figures
and 1 table.

TEXT: The authors studied the electrophoretic mobility of hemo-
giobin in dogs exposed to x rays, and also the adsorption curves
of oxyhemoglobin in the visible part of the spectrum. Acute radia-
tion sickness was produced in dogs of 6 - 12 kg weight by a single
exposure to a dose of '000 - 800r from a distance of I m, qt a rate
of 14r/min. Electrophoresis of the hemoglobin was carrieu out.- re-
peatedly An agar gel by the method of Monnier and Fischer. The ad-
sorijtion curves of the hemoglobin solution were studied by means
of a spectrophotometer, and the amino acid composition of the hemo-
--globin was established by chromatography. The hemoglobin was in-

vestigated at regular intervals until the animals' death. The re-
sults sho,ved that, in healthy dogs, hemoglobin behaves as a homo-
.-eneous substance under electrophoresis and migra--es at a uniform

speed to-viards the cathode. After exposure to radiation, the elec:-
trophoretic mobility of hemoglobin decreases and the substance
miz~rates more slowly if the radiation sickness produced has been
severe. In thooe cases in which the chan-e in the velocity of mi-
gration was less marked, the radiation sickness ptoved to be M4 1_
der and more free of complications. The intensity of the changes
varied in definite phases which coincided with the phases of ra-
diation sickness. The adsorption curves of" the oxyhemoglobin so _
lusion, on the other hand, were completely identical in both irra-
diated and control dogs. From these facis the authors conclude
that radiation affects mainly the synthesis of the protein compo-
nent of the hemoglobin :.-,olecule but does not affect the pigm,-nL
hem. This conclusion could be confirmed by chromatographic ana-
.lysis which showed significant changes in the amino acid strac-
__tUre of the hemoglobin molecule after exposure to radiation. There

The authors study the kinetics of structiral changes which take place

I witha deformation amplitude of 4%. Isolated pores and cracks are observed in the
earliest stages of cyclic deformation (I or 2 cycles). Dam 'age at this stage of de-1
-.1formation has no effect on the mechanical behavior of the specimen as a whole.
After 10 cycles, the copper specimen shows -localized fractures where three grains
!meet and between a twin layer and the boundary of the adjacent grain. A pt

graph of a specimen after 50 cycles of deformation shows a marked tendency for in-
idividual micropores to fuse into cracks along grain boundaries, especially adjacent'
to twins. The part played by twin boundaries in cyclic deformation is discussed.
~11 network of fract-ired grain boundaries is observed after 150 cycles. No slip
lines or fractures are observed within the grains themselves until approximately 2/3
of the fracture life of the specimen. The structure shows signs of fracturing in
.;zones of stable slipping after 400 cycles. The density of-frov. specimens decreases,

Title Volga Hedge Mustard and its Control.
Orig Pub Zemledelie, 1956, No 6, 122
Abstract Volga hedge mustard was first discovered on the right bank
steppe portion of the Ukraine (Dgepropetrovsk district) in
1948. It is now spreading considerably, choking fields,
especially plantings of perennial grasses; it is more clif-
ficult to uproot than thistle or European bindweed. Judging
by preliminary data of the Training-Experimental Farm of
Dnepropetrovsk Agricultural Institute, the best way to
control hedge mustard is shallow plowing of the stubble; a
timely deep autumn plowing by a plow with a foreplow; spring-
summer cultivation of the field by a web-footed cultivator.
Soil cultivation by d-isking implements is less effective,
