ABSTRACT: At the outset, the coriecptiori of the zero dynau-ic surface iii the
ocean is defined. The definition {liven bore corres~,ond:~ to the
notion, that the horizontal compontents of the velocity of the
ocean currents equal zero. A condition holding for the unit co-
lumn under this circur~istances is given here. The author further
postulates the followings 1) The density and the velocity d,c,pend
linearly on the depth . 2) 1'lie ratio AU~AS rer~iains tl~ie sarnf~ v~ith
respect to the vertical line at every po~.nt of the ocoai;. (Ad and
AS denoting the coefficients of the vertical turbulent viscosity
and of turbulent diffusion, xespectively). Phis corres~~oncis to the
assumption, that every vertioal line in the ocean po:~f3essca it

oceaJaalogical observations is their determination by special. graphs, or by
the ,3o-called T, S-diagrams introduced into oceanological practice by B.
Helland-Hansen. He notes that graphs of specific volume of sea water com-
prising the entire range of temperatures and sralinities of the world ocean
were constructed and published in the USSR for the first time, in 1941, by
N. N. Zubov and K~ M. Sirotov in their "A1'bom okeano7.ogicY~eskikh grafikov",
~ydromet Press. The present article contains graphs for the determination
of (oS/ovt~ as a function of 5 or vt and tables of thb function vt=f(T,5),

ABSTRACT: New insecticides for cotton plants Dave recently been
used in the USSR. One of them, ethyl-mercapto-ethyldieth~rl-
thiophosphate or abbreviated Mercaptopllos, has proved to lie
very effective. This drug penetrates :[nto the t:iasue of 1;he
plants, through the roots or leaves, and is distributed into
the vascular system, thereby making the cotton plants poi~ion-
ous for mites, aphids and other suctor'~al insects. The
effect of one spraying, 1.2 kg of a 3010 concentrate for es~ch
ha, lasts about one to two months. A :second spraying, with
1.5 kg per ha, would represent a complete protection of trle
harvest from suctorial insects. The preference of Mercapt.o-
phos over other poisons consists in its complete eliminat:i.on
of various insects. Cotton plants which had beers treated
with this poison, yielded a crop 30-50j~~ higher than usual.
Special safety measures must be used during application, a.s
Mercaptophos is poisonous to human beir;gs as well. as animals.
