TITLE: Ageing and Thermal Load of an Open-hearth Furnace
(Stareniye i teplovaya nagruzka martenovskoy pechi)

ARSTRACT: Changes in the thermal operating conditions of an open-
hearth furnace in the course of its campaign are discussed
on the basis of data on the operation of 350-ton tilting
furnaces in the "Azovstal"' Works. In view of difficulties
of the evaluation of slow changes in the operation of an
open-hearth furnace in the course of a campaign (on
"ageing") two indices are proposed - "thermal load of
idle running" and "active thermal load". From the value
of heat consumption during idle running during the
individual periods of a campaign, the economy of the
furnace operation and the value of the active thermal
load (the difference between the absolute thermal load
during a given melting period and the load of idle running)
can be evaluated. Changes in the thermal load of idle
running can be determined from changes in the thermal load
Cardl/2 during bottom repairs and during the periods of pure

boiling and deoxidation. As the thermal work of an open-
hearth furnace ia the course of a campaign is continuousl7
changing when establishing thermal operating conditions,
it is necessary to take into consideration thermal load

ABSTRACT: The author points out that recently a new method of lifting
and assembling prefabricated parts with the help of a vacuum
grab device has been applied abroad, and is being closely
studied in the USSR. The Laboratoriya sooruzheniya tunneley
Vsesoyuznogo nauchno-issledovatel'skogo instituta transport-
nogo stroitelfstva (Laboratory of Tunnel Construction of
t,'e All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Road Con-
struction) uses such a vacuum grab device for the construction
of tunnels and metro subways. For experimental purposes,
a special testing device was developed in this laboratory.
The author briefly describes the basic principles of this
system and mentions the research work done in this field
by Engineer Ya.I. Marennyy and Aspirant B.G. Zakandyrin under
the scientific supervision of the author. Similar research

TEXT: The present letter to the editor briefly deals with the problem given
in the title; a more detailed account will be published soon. The authors
suggested a method of removing alpha particle tracks from MKO-K (NIKFI-K)
and Agfa-K2 emulsions in a time of less than two hours. These alpha and
gamma tracks were removed by oxidizing them with hydrogen peroxide vapor
of different concentrations at 320 and 280C. The gamma background may be
reduced by oxidizing the emulsion between exposure and development, e.g,,
for less than 55 minutes in 6% H 202 vapor at 320C, during which time the
number of grains of alpha particle tracks, for example, decreases only

slightly. The methods suggested may be very useful for work with old
