ABSTRACT: The author gives a detailed description of design im-
provements of the standard Soviet "UKV ChM" (uhf FYI)
3.5,-kw transmitter, performed by the personnel of the
Riga Telecast Center. The transmitters are being used
in many Soviet tovms for broadcusting TV sound and
radio programs on ultrashort viaves. In the standard
design, as shown on the block diagram (Figure 1), the
transmitter is fitted out with high-power tubes having
water-cooled anodes; it is bulky and its efficiency is
not high. The distinctive feature of the new design,
shown on the block diagram (Figure 2), is that the fre-
quency multiplication is obtained in low-poaer stages
in contrary to the standard design using high-power

tripling conditions and having low efficiency. The fre-
quency tripling in the new design is obtained on "6F911
and "GU-29" tubes, and the low-povier stages are assem-
bled in a block, the circuit diagram of which is shown
(Figure 3). The tubes with water-cooled anodes,
"GU-27A" and "GU-5A", in -the last two :-jtageo ave r(.-pLicod
by the cbrresponding tubes with air-cooled anodes,
"GU-27B" and "GU-5B", and the original thyratrons are
replaced by thyratrons "TG1-2, 5/411. Finally, the en-
tire water-cooling system is replaced by an air-cool-
ing system. Reserve sub-assembly units are installed
in the vacated places in the panel and provided with
automatic and manual swiLching control to shorten the
breakdown periods. Operational tests witlh-die 4 im-
proved sets, in the Riga Telecast Center and in Dvinsk,
has shown their operational stability; lower input

design, the same output of 3.5 - 4 kw, and the same
