Abstract In order to clarify the mechanism of Torn's reaction the
authors added to blood treated with oxalic acid cortiso-
ne (C) or human serum of persons who received ACM.
Addition of C decreased the number of eosinophils (E),
inducing their disintegration tip-to 41~ of the oriLinal
amount., especially in large doses of C. In the bload
of patients with Cushing's syndrome, Addison's disease,
and acromegaly, the decrease of E (to 55% of originsl

amount) was noted in introduction of C but not of ACTH.
Addition to the blood of serum of a healthy person
which was taken 4 hours after injection of ACTH, decrea-
sed the number of E to a greater degree than addition of
C. Disintegration of E under action of ACTH should be
regarded as a result of effect of substances which are
formed in the serum after ACTH introduction. Neither C
nor ACTH induced in vitro a decrease of the amount of
blood lymphocites, which is well expressed after ACTH in-
troduction in vivo. DOCA did not influence the content
of E in blool-.Cortin decreased it to a lesser degree

AN dissociation was diagnosed in 6 cases out of 2,000 sportsmen. As far as the
mechanism of onset is concerned, the principal r6le was played in almost all the cases
not so much by slowing down of the sinus rhythm, as by its arrythmia (usuall
respiratory) and by acceleration and activation of the heterotopic rhythm. Wit T,
regard to the pathogenesis of the disorder it is suggested that the greatest role is
played by functional chanqes (h' ervagotonia) and the coexisting organic lesions -

the latent or manifest loci of inTection (tonsds, teeth). The AN dissociation is an
abnormal disturbance from the point of view of sport medicine, as it. points to an
impaired adaptation ca abilit of the heart and the nervous system under the

Report on 7 cases. Under local anaesthesia a trifin nail was driven in along a
direction pin with slimultancous insertion of rigid bone graft, uniting the neck of
the talus with the tuber of the calcaneus. No external fixation. Early ambulation.
Bony or fibrous ankylosis and good functional results were obtained in all the cases.

ABSTRACT f isolated from the steeping liquor, three of which
have been identiTied (tannin, catechol, and chloro-
genic acid). The above compounds have been found
to inhibit the germination of the barley to differ-
ent extents. In addition, it has been observed
that a marked inhibition of germination is also
produced by the presence of an unidentified sub-
stance which gives'an orange-fluorescing spot on

The author describes his-proposed method for the abortive treatment of acute ca-
tarrh, consisting in hot and then cold sprinkling of both arms In the first period
of the disease. Performance of the procedure requires a faultless technique which
alone can guarantee success. Positive results were obtained in about 80 cases of
the author's practice consisting of over 100 cases treated by this method. The
author-explains the procedure which is based on the principle of so-called
compensatory dominance. According to the author the cold may be explained as
a result of the action of an inadequate thermic stimulus, which may produce a
state of dominance in the sphere of the upper cervical ganglion. removal of which
may be obtained by the above described methods. (XI, 10)
