ABSTRACT: For the conversion, apart from the 35LK23 picture tube, a
5 T84S kenotron-and 3everal electrolytic condensers and
tubular vitrified resistances are needed. The main ccnvor-
sion operation boils down to modifying the rectifier unit.
The tube L2o (6'6b) is replaced by a 6P6S tube. Construc-
tional details and hints for the converaion are given.
There are 2 circuit diagrams, 2 drawings and 1 diagram.

TEXT: Technological parameters are detailed for the production of
"agl6porito" from coal-mine rooks from the eastern part of the Donate
Basin. Coul-containing rocks straight from the mine had a chemical
Composition (in %) of: SiO 2 57.61 Fe 203 5.671 Al203 21.6a, CaO 1-14,
MgO 2.28, 1; (pyrite) 0-13, SO 0.1, H 0.0-62y the rest 6.3. Mineralogical:

and petrOg3?aphical investigations showed that the rooks are typical thin-I,-'
seamed argillite. It was found that agloporite with a uniform finely
porous structure could be produced using a charge of 85% rock, 10% sawdust;
band 5% fuel. with 14% moisture content, rarefied under a fire grate at a 25

TITLX: Quartz Corrosion in the Menocenozoic Weathering Crust of
North Kazakhstan (Korr02;iya kwartsa v mezo-kaynozo.Takoy kore

PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii Nauk SSSR, 1957, Vol- 114, Nr 4,
pp. 862 - 864 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: It is known that quartz is one of the minerals most constant
in surface conditions. Fevertheless several researchers have
collected a series of facts in the course of the last years
which prove a dissolving power of quartz under certain con-
ditional above all in tl;e process of rock weathering. Correspond-
ing examples are given. The quartz percentage in the composi-
tion of the weathering orust of the paleozoio rocks of
Kazakhstan is very important. Up to now it was affirmed that
quartz remains unohanged in the entire extent of the weathering
profile. An attentive atudy of the cruet denuded by full sections
as well as by means of bore-holes showed that the quartz graine
seemed to be corroded here not only at the edges but gradually

Quartz Corrosion in the Mesooenozoic Weathering Crust of North Kazakhotan:
transition of moderately changed rooks of the lower part of
the weathering crust to intensively modified rocks in the
upper part. The reasons are partly the climate at the trine
when the mesocenozoic crust was formed. The climate was,
especially during the formation of their upper part, the oadi-
nite zone, warm and moistp similar to the subtropical climate,
and favored the penetration of large quantities of surface
water into the depth of the rooks being in the process of
weathering. In order to explain the quartz substitution in the
weathering crust the following references are mentioned:
Ginzburg and Vitovskaya explain the quartz corrosion in the
1~ams of a beidellite (partly a montmorillonite-)composition
by the alkali elimination on the occasion of the decomposition
of hydromica-loams and on the occasion of their transition
to argillaceous beidellites. The alkalis corrode the quartz
grains at their points of contact with clay particles. The in-
Card 2/4 vestigation of the Kazakhstan material shows that this cannot

Q"rtz Corrosion in the Mesooenozoic Weathering Crust of North Kazakhstan
explain the phenoraena in the weathering crust of North
Kazakhstanj even if it applies in a concrete case of the
aforementioned authors. Here the quartz grains show traces
of dissolution in all zones of the crust. They are less corroded
in the lower part where the alkali elimination on the*ocoasion
of the transition of the hydromiaa' into caolinite takes place
than in the upper zone in which part of the grains is totally
substituted by caolinite. Since the PH-regime changes in the
course of the development of the weathering crust from a
slightly alkaline in the lower part to a slightly acid one in
the upper part of the caolinite zone, it must be assumed that
quartz to a certain degree is soluble in both milieus. Un-
fortunately only few papers deal with this problem. The SiO 2
percentage of the fountains and rivers of the laterite zone
of British Guiana and the Dutch Indies is, however, greater
than that of Al 203 and Fe203* The author has no data concerning
Card 3/4 loam solubility. Apparently the quartz grains are also on the

whole substituted by argillaceous material owing to a con-
siderably higher resistent power of the argillaceous minerals,
compared to silica under the conditions of the weathering oruet,
