Abstract: The best results of melting were obtained witii en-
richment of air to Z6_27% of 02. In addition, th~-
productivity of the kiln was increased from 50 to
70 kq/hour (by 40210, removal of fiber - from 130
to 1814 kg/m2 per hour, With outlay Of C 2 6.1 nm3/
/hour. The quality of mic mincral fiber' was also
increased. Temperature in the melting area of tha
kiln was Increased from 1350 to 14Z50, but in-
creased wear and tear of the lining m2de of lovi-
nitr,~ (Czech chrommagnesiuiri brick) was not observed.
Other methods for introducing Op are- by means of
enriching the air of the bloucr ventilator, rjr by
the addition of 0 2 directly into thc working arca

Abstract: (English article, authors' English summary modified] An outbreak
of infectious canine hepatitis was observed in the animal nursery of the
Budapest Zoo in the spring of 1965. All of the 4-5 months old bear cubs died
within about 2 weeks. Pathological and histological studies revealed that the
most severe lesions had developed in the central nervous system and were
manifested in the form of serous, hemorrhagic lymphocytic meningo-encephalitis.
The Gowdry type A intranuclear inclusion bodies characteristic of Rubarth's
disease were present in various organs, in the endothelial cells of blood
vessels and .5inusoids as well as in the parenchymal cells of the liver,in
every case. The brain lesions were similar to those seen in foxed which died
of encephalitis or occasionally in dogs which died of canine hepatitis.
The results of serological tests and the timing of the outbreak both were
indicative of a transmission of the infection from dingo puppies to the
bear cubs which were housed together in the nursery. 1 East German, 7 Western

Abstract; [Authors' Hungarian summary] The plasma of two " insulin- res istanT."
diabetic patients was found to greatly reduce the effect of the generally
used insulin miyture (prepared from cattle-sheap-swine pancreas) in i-n-vitro
exprrimcnts. Similarly, the re5ults of i.v.insulin loading tests anrl 3f the
hypo--lycpmic convulsion test In mice also confirmed the insulin-neutralizinE:
effect of the patients' plasma. l'it the same tine, pure swine in3ulin was
found to be cffective in both in-vivo and in-vitro experimf=nts. ^ssumini; the
presence of a type-sppcific insulin resistance caused by insulin antibody,
the patients were given a prolonged treatment with swine insulin. The treat-
ment resulted in a satisfactory improvement in carbohydrate tolerance and in
a considerable decrease in the amount of insulin needed, in both cases.

A short reviitw of the results of 173 prefrontal. leucotomies, performed in
Hungary up tA) the let of August 1948* In 9 cases, operated on because of
intolerable pain, results were excellent. In the remaining 164 psychotic
cases ood remission was seen in 2-4.3o/o, fairly good and slight remission:
20 7 O~o eacb, no change in 280/o, relapse in 13 .40/0. Mortality 6/o.
Th; best results were seen in involution-melancholia, the worst in the
demented case,3 of hebephrenic and simple schizophrenias. The author
stresses the vignificance of careful individual re-education. As regards
indications ard contra-indications he agrees with the statements of
Freeman and Watts. To render scientific evaluation of the results
possible the nsed for a uniform international classification is urgent.

be used in every case of parenchymatous, cerebrospinal, and asymptomatic neuro-
syphilis. Tables forms the only exception in which Quarz irradiation and auto-
haemotherapy is useful. The radicular pain of takes responds to X-ray irradiation.
Of the different forms of pyrtotherapy typhoid vaccine injection is that of choice.
PenicilUn treatment is recommended in every case in which pyrexia is contraindicated.
Intrathecal administration is superfluous. The author proposes the compulsory use
of preliminary bismuth injections to avoid dangerous Herxheimer reactions.

The patient, now 65, had at the age of 52 a general epileptiforrn seizure and, in t 'he
follow~ing 6 vr., although mild arteriosclerosis was the only clinical sign, there were
2 more seizu;es. At the a(re of 58, jacksonian seizures appeared with conjugate deviation
and faciobracbial convulsions on the left side. Thereafter there were permanent symp-
toms of anisocoria, mild central facial paresis, marked Oppenheirn and Barr6 symptoms
on the right, and ataxic gait. Spinal fluid, ocular fundi, and skull X-rays were negative.
After another period of 6 yr. in which several generalized seizures wc~e the only symp-
toms, marked psychic changes and pyramidal symptoms developed. The patient then
went rapidly downhill, with development of multiple decubitus ulcers, acute poly-
arthritis, anal bilateral femoral thron-ibophlebitis, death occurring within a year. At
autopsy both frontal poles were softened, and contained haernorrhagic areas ieaching
the cortical substance. Tumorous tissue was found over widespread areas of the
meninges infiltratiog into the intact cortical substance with occasional cyst formation.
According to Globus' ternfloology the tumour was a pial (vasetilar) meningriorna.

The axioma that in advanced age all cerebral lesions should be regarded as turnours until
definitely proved otherwise bas justification. Features such as sudden onset, fluctuating
clinical bourse, absence of signs of intracranial pressure, raised sedimentation rate,
marked hypertension, normal cerebrospinal fluid, etc. cannot in themselves rule out
the presence of a cerebral neoplasm in the older age group. As electroencephalograpby
appears to be of less value in this group than in younger individuals, and also because
of the apparent dangers of angiography, stress is laid upon the necessity for complete
histories and thorough clinical observation of the elderly patient to establish or reject

Abstract: [Authors' Hungarian summary] The authors re,,:ort on a study of 62
patients with multiple sclerosis. These cases belong to the 'benign' fonn
of the disease. Some cases with symptoms characteristic of the three sub-
groups of the disease are described. The methods (rest, rehabilitation) which
might facilitate the stabilization of the disease are discussed. The need
is stressed for the establishment of convalescent homes and institutes of
rehabilitation. Tb sanitariums might fill the need in the former, polio

Abu-tract: Experimental porphyrism was induced in white rats with allyl Iso-
~7r_opylacetyl urea (Sedormid; Hoffmann La-Roche) and with griseofulvin (Li-
kuden; Farbwerke Hoechst A. G.). The pathological findings in the experi-
mental animals, especially those evident in the nerve cells., spinal marrow.,
and cortex of the brain, were described) discussed, and illustrated. It
was shown that histological findings are suitable for identifying
porphyrism. The neuropathological symptoms encountered vere comparable
with those in humans. 27 references, including 4 German and 23 Western.

heater tubes after service. The tubes came from a high-pressure
