ABSTRACT The method of direct microscoping on membrane-ultra-filters) wide?Ly used during recent years, made it possible to obtain an idea of the density of the population of microorganisms in water. The N3rth-We- stern part of the Black Sea, however, has not yet been studied. The material was collected by means of Nansen's bathometer in 1951 (146 samples from a depth of from o - 98 m were taken). The niunter of microorganisms differs in this area between 14.ooo and 495,ooo per m. Their number is greatest in depths of from o - 25 m. Also the average values of biomass for the strata of from o - 25, -) - 5o, o - loo and o - 2oo m prove the compact character of the main mass of microorganisms with the upper 5trata of from 25 - 5o M as well as the decrease of micro-population with growing depth. This means that microorganisms form about 2o - 25 O/o of tile total living substance. The biomass of the microorganism-s in the oxygen zone amounts to about one fourth of the biomass of the phyto- plankton. Comparison of the number as well as of the bi,)maqs of the microorganisms in various seas shows that the Black Sea does not range behind the central and Southern Caspian Sea as regards the den- sity of micro-population and that it is greater than that of a nur-ber of other water.
