Abstract: The significance of the work of the first Russian botanist-physiologist
S.A. Rachinskiy (1823-1902), that of A.S. Famintsin (1835-1918) and
particularly that of K.A. Timiryazev (1843-1920) on the development
of plant physiology in Russia., is underlined. There is an elucida-

pre--evolutionar7 era: O.B. Baranetskiy (1843-1905), K.A. Furievich
(iW-1916),, E.F. Votchal (1864-1937), V.R. Zalenskiy (1875-1923),

discovery of photosynthesis, photosynthesis and the cycle of substances on the
earth, photosynthesis pigments@ the basic features of the chemical structure
of chlorophyll, carotinoids, phycobilins, use of the chromatographic method
and the method of labeled atoms in studying photosynthesis pigments and
photosynthesis, the biosynthesis of chlorophyll, the pigments of the cell
fluid, the physieochemical nature of the photosynthesis process, and methods
of studying photosynthesis. The author also discusses photosynthesis as the
life process of plants, the cultivation of plants under artificial lighting
conditions, photosynthesis and the crop yield. No personalities are mentioned.

TEXT: The reaction of cumulus with the surrounding medium is con-
sidered when moistened particles, inducing gravitational coagula-
tion and precipitation, are introduced into a cloud's summit. It is
shown that 8ubcloud air cools when rain drops evaporate beneath a
cloud, and that ascending currents give place to descending. The
break up of a cloud occurs in .consequence of the fact that moisture
.ceases to enter across its lower boundary, and as a result of the *
evaporation of cloud particles when relatively dry air is drawn in
across, the upper and side boundaries, the intensity of this process
---being determined by the cloud's Bize and by the temperature and the

humidity distribution in and outside it. Thick cumulus can I'disin-'
tegrate itself" after moistened particles have introduced a suffi- -
cient mass of water under the cloud. This mass can be ascertained
if the cloud's water content and the atmospheric temperature and
humidity are known. The introduction under cumulus of enough water
from outside the cloud can cause descending currents and the cloud's
dispersion. The formation of a "locking" layer near the lower boun-
dary of a cloud, within which an upwards-directed force acts on the
sinking cloud masses, plays a decisive part in the cloud's disper-
sion. The "locking" layer's lower boundary occurs at a level where
the relative humidity of air rising into the cloud is still small
enough for the atmospheric water to evaporate in amounts, necessa-
ry for the density of air beneath the cloud to be equalized with
that outside the subcloud column at the same height. The layer's
upper boundary occurs at a level above which the cloudts water con-
teAt is sufficient for the density of air, sinking from there, to
become equal at is lower boundary to that of air at the same height

'ABSTRACT: The author derives a system of equations which can be solved to determine
.!the specific humidity of the gaseous, liquid and solid phases of water as a function'
of spatial coordinates and time in a cloud and beneath it in the case of natural
@processes and in the case of artificial action on the cloud. This system of equa-,
tions describes processes in clouds containing ice crystals and supercooled water
@droplets, and also includes equations for determining the number of droplets and
@the number of crystals in a unit mass of air. The following assumptioris are made-
11) the water droplets are completely entrained in the atmosphere; 2) the crystals'

ABSTRACT; A formula for the linear di3tortion of a section on the
aerophoto.-raphic plan for the general caoe, i. c. at any
position of the section, is given here. The workinG formula
(1o) for the determination of the error

is derived. By the introduction of the argument y 0, i.e. the
ordinate of the center of distance, formula (1o) is trans-
formed to formula(12). On the basis of these two formulae

computed. When the average aniount of distance 1 is assumed
to be 6o to 70 min, the error of calculation corresponds to
about o,1 mm. Then some special cases in the determination
of the distance distortion according to formulae (1o) and
(12) at different positions of the distance on the aerial
photograph are investigated. The formula (19) for the distor.,
tion of the radius-vector on the aerial photograph due to
the presence of the angle of tilt is obtained. Finally for.,

Investigation of the Mechanical Method of Photographic
Triangulation (Iseledovaniye mekhanicheskogo sposobs.

Geodeziya i kartografiya, 1958, Nr 8, pp. 40-44 (USSR)
The results obtained by the experimental investigation of the
accuracy ana efficacy of the mechanical method of photographic
triangulation are given. Horizontal concentration by the mechan-
ical method of photographic triangulation was carried out with
8 trapezoids, 4 of which in a scale of I ; 25000 and 4 of
I : 10 000. The present paper and the numerous investigations
carried out by the author show that the mechanical method sur.-
passes the graphical method with respect to accumoy and that it
can therefore be employed for the compilation of photographic
maps of plane and hilly regions At a scale of 1 : 25 000,
1 : 10 000 and even of I : 5 000. Data are given concerning the
accuracy of photographic maps which were produced in the
1'Sel'khozaeros11yemW' plant under the author's super-vision. The
Investigation of the Mechanical Method of Photogr-aphic sov/6-58-8-6/15
Triangulation
tests were carried out with the cooperation of Chief Engineer
F. S. Kaeliura and Engineer A. Radionova. The efficacy of the
mechanical method of photo-triangulation compared to the graph-
ical method was determined experimentally op the basis of
measurements of time carried out according to working-stages. It
was found that by the mechanical method 6 hours are saved per
plane-table sheet. The essential advantage offered by the mechan-
ical method is the fact that that part of the process which re-
quires the longest time, viz. reduction and coordination of the
network, is here carried out mechanically. The development of
photo-triangulation networks by means of split-plane-table
sheets leads to a considerable increase of work-productivity if
compared with the gra-Dhical method. There are 4 tables and
