TITLE: The Effect of p14 and Anion Concentration on the Steady-state
Potential and the Corrosion of Iron (Vliyaniye pH i kontsentrat-
sii aniona na statsionarnyy potentsial i korroziyu zheleza)

ABSTRACT: The electrochemical and corrosive properties of Fe are in-
vestigated in relation to pH with simultaneous consideration of
the influence of the anions in the solution. Armco Fe electrodes
were used to measure irreversible potentials by the capacitor-
charge method. The corrosion strength was measured by the
weight change in solutions of Britton's universal buffer mixture
with the following additions: 0.01 N HCI:, 0.1 N HC1, 1.0 N
HCI,and 1.0 N KBr, a chloride mixture in which the total con-
centration of Cl ions was 0.1 N and 1.0 N, and a sulfate mixture
with a decinormal concentration Of S04?,-. At pH of 0 to 5.5 the
Fe potentials are in linear relation to the pH in accordance with
the equation EFe=-0.245-0.04 Z pH and are independent of the
Card 1/2 anion concentration. A change of 1 unit in pH changes the

potential by 0.040 v. When PH> 5.5, the potential changes sharply toward
the positive, is dependent upon the concentration of Cl ions, and is indeynd-
ent of the PH of the solution. At a PH of 2, corrosion attains 160 mg/ -, per
day. An increase in PH markedly reduces the rate of corrosion, which is
mg/cM2 per day at a PH of 6.5. In PH 4 solutions of Britton's mixture
with normal concentrations of Cl and Br ions, corrosion attains a maximum
rate. In the 2 to 3.5 PH interval, the K-pH curve presents an anomaly that
confirms the passivating action of Cl and Br i.ons.

TITLE: On the Tantalum Electrode (0 tantalovom elektrode)

ABSTRACT: The behavior of the tantalum electrode in solutions of
buffering salts iri a broad pH range, in the solutions of certain
salts, acids, and NaOHwas investigated. The potentials of
Ta electrodes (in the form of thin Ta foil) were measured by
the PPTV-type potentiometer with a mirror galvanometer
opposite a calomel semielement which was in contact with
tl~e*Ta electrode. In the presence of reducing agents or in
alkaline solutions Ta develops negative potentials up to
-035v; in acid or oxidizing solutions the potential attains
+0. 95 v, The, selationship of the stationary potentials of
Ta to the pH for buffer mixtures is expressed as follows:

is proved experimentally as an indicator in the potentiometric
titration for the reactions of neutralization, precipitation, and

hyposulf ite, 0. 3 - 0. 4 v in the titration of Mohr' s salt with permanganate,

Abstract: It was determined in experiments in 5 calves with
fistulas of the stomach and duodenum that introduction
of moderate (4oo-500 gm) or large (600-1000) doses
of Na 2SO4 produces inhibition of motility of the
rumens and of the reflex of rumination through action
on the receptors of the abomasum and bowel. These
effects are more intense by introduction of solu-

tions of Na2SO4 than MgS04. The degree and dyna-
mics of the development of inhibition depend upon
the doses of the above solutions, upon individual
peculiarities and functional conditions of the
digestive organs at the time of introduction of
the solutions. The administration of larger doses
Of Na2S04 (800-1000 gm) may lead to development
of marked hypotonia and tympanism of the rumens.
Administration of large doses of NaP_S04 and MgSc4
intensifies the evacuating function of the abomasium
and the peristaltis of the duodenum. In the admi-
nistration of moderate doses of Na2S04 and. Mg So4,
the purgative effect with elimination of thick or
watery fecal matter is more apparent after administra-
tion of Na2SO4. When administrating TTa2Sa4 directly

Abstract, - It was demonstrated by experiments that the reflex of
closin(; the esophageal canal is caused by the excitation
of the receptors of the oral cavity and larynx. In ani-
imls of all ages, the closinC; of the esophaGeal canal is
effected by a slow peroral introduction of 0.25% solution
of sodium sulfate and magnesium sulfate, 10% solutions of
NaCl and sugar, and 0.1% solution of quinine hydrochloride.

ABSTRACT: There are 21 cold storage distributing houses in the CSR with
a total capacity of 100,000 tons; of these 6 are single story
houses, The latest trend is7to build only single story re-
frigeration houses of 5,000 - 6,000.tons capacity. The cold
storage buildings are made of prefabricated reinforced con-
crete parts; as insulating material is used mostly "velit" made
of alternative layers of corrugated and smooth paper, impreg-
nated with coal tar and stuck together with water glass. The
floor is insulated to prevent the ground from freezing, Be-
tween the refrigorAtin,- chambers are narrow pl-tforms 4m

freezers, in which a temperature of -30 0C is maintained.
Packed meat is frozen in 24 hours at an air flow velocity of

are moving on an overhead trolley. For small.portions me`tt
is packed in small cardboard boxes, with or without vejet--.bles:
Ready cooked dishes are also prepared, packedi and stored in
the cold storaf,e houses in the CSR. In Brno a conveyor instal
lation is handling ready cooked dishes. As refrigeriiting a:;ent
brine is mostly used. There are various defrosting systems
being used, employing, either bot brine or hot ammonia. Co:(]
storage houses employ mo2tly vertic-1 compreosors of the type
2SN-200A (600 rpm, output 225,000 normal kgcal/hr) and of the
type 3 S111-300A (500 rpm and '000,000 kgcal/hour capacity
latest type suppiied in Prague are V-ohaped cornpren,2or.-I
720-960 rpm and up to 215,00U kgcal/hour capacity. Varloua
types of condenoers are in use. In places where auter is
sc-,.rce evaporation condensers are installed. These are turnc!d
out by CbT(D - Sokolovo Plant in various sizes of _,urfacen f'rom
