AUTHOR: G SOV120-122-2-39142 TITLE: Developmont of the Epithelium Lining of -the Oesophagus in Domestic Fov1 (Razvitiye epiteliallnoy vystilki pishchevoda domashnikh kur) PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR, 1958, Vol 122, Nr 21 PP 304-307 (uss it) ABSTRACT: The formation and the development of several organs in the embryogenesis is characterized by a sequence of the histologi- cal structures which is governed by definite rules (Ref 2). This was also reported for the human oesophagus (Refs 7, 8)- The author investigated hen embryos (eggs which were in- cubated for 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 19 days) and chicken at the age of 1 day and of 1 month in order.to find out whether a sequence of structures occurs in the covering epithelium in the hen oesophagus. The oeso- phagus mucosa of embryos 3, 4, and 5 dayEi old is free from folds. The oeBophagus is lined with an epithelium which con- sists of oblong prismatic, 1 - 2 rows of cells. Yitoses only occur at the surface (Fig 1). Sometimes the epithelium fills Card 1/4 the lumen of the oesophagus because of its rapid growth. SOV/2o-122-2-39/42 Developmont of the Epithelium Lining of the Oesophagus in Domestic Fowl Prom the 9th to the 10th day of incubation from 4 to 5 longi-- tudinal folds appear in the mucosa. In embryos 11 - 12 days old the epithelium starts to rearrange, forming several (2 - 4) layers. Now mitoses are not found on the surface. In embryos 13 - 16 days old ciliated and mucous cells appear at the surface of the multi-layered epithelium which exhibits an unequal thickness. These cells form an almost uninter- rupted layer. The number of mucous cells increases towards the stomach (Fig 2). The oesophagus of an embryo which is 15 days old is filled with swallowed albumen. Epithelial gem- mules originate from the basal surface of, the mucous epithel and penetrate into the underlying connec-'ive tissue. These gemmules consist of firm cells forming the rudiment of tube- like mucous glands (Fig 2j. Embryos at an age of 17 - 10~ days already show a mucosa with 8 - 10 cell layers, which shows well developed folds. The ciliated cells are placed as indi- vidual islands at the surface of the epithelium (Fig 3). They gradually flatten out, disintegrate and are peeled off. Yitoses are exclusively found at the bas4 's of the layer. Now the tubular mucous glands are developing from the mentioned Card 2/4 gemmules. They are lined with a prismatic epithelium and be- S011/2o- 122-2- 1142 DevelOlVent of the Spithelium Lining of the OesophagUs in DO.-.estic Fo,71 gin to ersecrate mucus. The epithelial lining of it chicken at the age of 1 day is multi-layered and plane. Disinter-rat- in- ciliated cells, are found only very rarely. 7-he tubular nucous glands are well developed and are "Aned with one-layer- ed epithel consisting of oblong prismatic cells (Fil 4). The walls of some mucous glands begin to form folds, with the underlying connective tissue taking part in this process. In chicken at the age of 1 month the lini-rig epithel is in the process of cornification. Large epithelial. ramparts appeur, which are covered by many small epithelium p-.ojeciions. Uvula from connective tissue are interposed in between, exhJbiting well developed collagenous fibers. This i.,t the cori;.licated transformation process of the cover epitheliiiri. Hitherto ciliated epithelium was reported only in the human oesopha,-Us (Refs 1, 7 - 9). The ciliated cells are by come authors con- sidered to be a recapitulation phenomenon (Refs A, 7, 8), by others it is considered to be exclusively an embryonal Idaption (Ref 1).
