lZeactions of Amides with Formalde*de XI. A Note on the Determination
of Formaldehyde Bound in Ureaformaldehyde Condensation Products
approach quantitative values. Ether IV is decomposed by
alkaline cyanide at labora-15ory in four hours and by
iodine in 24 hours. It is possible to conclude from the
expwimental evidence that an enlargement of the substituent
on the nitrogen of thettrea residue of theethers III, IV,
and V alters the reactivity of the dimethylene ether
bridges in alkaline media. Thus, the higher urea-formalde-
hyde condensates, which are with difficulty soluble or
insoluble will probably not have dimethylene ether bridges
which react in alkaline media (0.2 to 1N-NaOH) with
iodine or cyanide, because the nitrogen substituents are
at least as large as in ether III. This is in ap
a _;xreement
with further results. The ether bonds examined are
converted, in concentrated solution, by acid to methylene
bonding and in dilute solution, between pH 2 and pH 4, they
bydrolyse and this is complete in the case of ether III.
Metbylenebisphenylurea. hydrolyses completely under the
same conditions. Hydrolysis of methylene bridges in
methylenebisurea have aiready been reported. In this case,

alkaline media the methylene bridges are markedly stable
both in slAbstituted ureas and in methylenebisureas.
Because of the varying reactivity of the formaldehyde
derivatives of substituted -areas the necessary observations
from model studies can be cautiously transferred to the
reaction of urea-formaldehyde or thioureaformaldehyde
derivatives. It should have been possible, for example,
to decide from the work of Seidl and Vasta (Ref 6) that
the use of the phenol and cyanide method should allow
the determination of the amount of hydroxymethyl groups
side by side with dimethylene bridges though this is liot
the reality with the model substances nor with the urea
formaldehyde condensates. The results reported in the
present paper show that it is possible to determine
iodometrically hydroxymethyl formaldehyd8 besides methylene
and dimethylene at temperatures above 5 C in the soluble
condensates. Cyanide is required for the lesss:)luble
condensates. It has not been possible to give an experi-
mental explanation for the difference in reactivity of

Report the results of experiments which were conducted to determine
:tbe dosages of atropine and thiospasmine which affect the central nervous
_~:.system., and the manner in which these drugs act. Thiospasmine is the
su.1fonium analogue of Trasentine H, and was developed by Protiva ana
in 1953. Tests conducted by Votava and Shramkova in 1954 indicated
that thiospasmine has an inhibiting effect on intestinal motility. Chem-
leally thioeWmine is the iodide of 2-phenyloycloboxylacatoxyethyl

Abstract: The irsteraction of halogenide compounds of quadrivalent germaniwn
1 with hydazine hydrate in aqueous-organic solutions is investigated and the
il-Shysical chemical properties and structures of the resulting compounds are
studied., Germanium tetrachloride or germanium tetraiodide were dissolved in
diethyl ether and then a dilute solution of hydrazine hydrate was added. In
3-5 minutes a white precipitate formed and settled. This precipitate was
v-dGhed, dried in air, and tested. Qualitative analysis showed no halogen ion
content but gave a hydrazine reaction. This also holds for NA-1~0+ GeI2'
Thermographic and infrared spectroscopic studies were made of the resulting
compound, and H2k(Ge204(OH)2). was identified. Data on the mechanism of its
f cr;-i~ation, and its structure are presented. This paper -gas presented by Academician

AbstraPt Symptoms of the disanse, areas of occurrence of
the agent and host plant are described. Besides
arfalfa, C. trifolii,which is not a strictly
spaoialized species, also attacks certain species
of the genera Trifolium, Meltlotus, Ornithopus.
The differences are emphasized between 0, trifoli-
um and Kabatiella oaulivora which has previously
been regarded as the anthracnose pathogen. Possi-
bilities of oontroling this disease are discussed.

Abstract juthor's English summa ry modified_7: Changes in the
Ur-ain radiocirculo-ram caused by vascular cerebral lesions are
discussed The method is based on the use of sorum albumin cont-
aining Il ~1 which is administered intravenously, and the activity
in the frontotemporal area is directly recorded. Changes in the
recorded curves due to atherosclerosis, brain artery occlusions.,
occlusion of a. carotis interna, and to arterio-venous aneurysin
are discussed. Isotope circulo~-raphy has the advantage of not
affecting the patient and .-' giving an objective picture of brain
