ABSTRACT: The interpretation of energy spectra and EPR spectra of ions in various
crystals requires the solution of a secular equation which takes Into account the configura-
tion of the Ion and the symmetry of the intracrystalline field. In this paper, tables of
matrix elements have been compiled which make it possible to write a secular equation
at once for any term of any configuration in the case of an impurity ton with an unfilled d
shell. These tables can also be used in studying EPR spectra if the field of lower sym-
znetry produces a splitting comparable In order of magnitude to other perturbations (spin-
orbital and exchange perturbations, etc.). As an example, the splitting of the principal

is equal to the value at which dyn (E) reaches a maximum, and remains constant
in the determination of the maximum photoneutron yield. This assumption, which
is based on equations of the above papers, Is proved to be justified. Photoneu-
tron yields are calculated for Al, Cu, Pb, and for a maximum bremsstrahlung ener-
gy of 250 Mev. The results obtained hevo prove the applicability of the method
propo8ed by the two above-mentioned authors. There are 3 tables. i6

,rEXT: A method for controlling operation of centrifugal pumps by adjusting the angle of impeller blades
is described, and the dependence of head and delivery on the twisting angle of the blades about an axis pa-
rallel to the pump axis is shown. Experimental and predicted relationships between head and delivery co-
efficients for three values of blade-setting angles are compared, and theoretical characteristics are plotted
for the case of non-interrupted flow of an ideal fluid in a circular cascade of infinitely thin blades. The good
agreement of experimentally predicted values in the field of optimum head and delivery proves the validity
of the Hoffmcister method. (Abstractor's nole: apparently the above method is meant]. It is shown that a
pump with adjustable-blade impeller ensures higher efficiency in a widcr range of operational characteristics
and is therefore more economic than the same pump but with the fixed blades (stator) mounted at the
pump inlet. There are 5 figures.

ABSTRACT- The method was applied at the "Krasnvy oktyabr"' [Ti ~ Red October]
plant in Krasnodar (1951-1953). The content of the :shavings in the
cupola charge amounted to 8.30/o. The Untreated shavings are charged
into a device consisting of a hopper, mounted above dit: charging plat-
form of the worm conveyor, and the drive inechanism of the latter.
One side of the conveyor is connected to the hopper by means of a
vertical tube, while the other side connects to the interior of the
cupola furnace (CF) through an opening in the masonrv. The axis of
this opening is situated at a distance of 300 mm above the axis of the

shavings into the fusion zone of the CF. The output of the device amounts to 200 kg
of shavings per hour. A single CF 950 mm in diameter is serviced by two such
units, each of which is powered by an electric motor rated at 4.5 kw. Introduction
of shavings in an amount equivalent to 80/6 did not produce any perceptible changes
in the temperature or the composition of the resulting cast iron. The hourly output
of the CF's increased by 100/o. The cost of the device described is -2000 rubles.

ABSTRACT: Types VSZSh-70/36 and VSZSh-ZShch automatic selenium chargers
are widely used for charging storage batteries of mining locomotives. The
charging current is kept constant automatically as the voltage across the
battery terminals rises. The principal components of the charger are:
(1) selenium-disk rectifier units connected in a three-phase bridge'circuit;
(2) a three-phase voltage regulator consisting of a stepdown transformer
(VSZSh-70/36 type) or an autotransformer (VSZSh-ZShch type) and a saturation

choke coil whose impedance, decreasing from additional magnetization as the
battery voltage rises, insures the constant charging current. In the
VSZSh-70/36 type, the stepdown -transformer primary and the saturation
choke in series with it can be star or delta connected depending on the supply
voltage. This has no effect on the voltage -regulator operation. In the
VSZSh-ZShch type a star-connected autotransformer circuit is used. It has
been found that if the autotransformer and the saturation choke coils are delta
connected, the rectifier operating conditions change so much that ita function
is practically stopped. Phenomena occurring in the above types during the
star-delta switching are examined, and the reasons precluding the operation
of delta-connected VSZSh-2Shch type, which often seems desirable with ZZO v
supply voltage, are explained.
