ABSTRACT: The author reports on the use of isotopes In the Czechoslovakian
textile industry. Equipment for measuring the surface weight or
the density of textiles by means of radioactive isotopes is being
developed. Closed emitters (see photograph 1) are easily controllable
and protection against radiation is possible by using plexiglass,
sheet metal, lead etc. Photograph 1 shows closed emitterst in the
left corner 3 ~_ emitters T1 204 of about I me capacity, behind them
~ lead cap; a strontium ~_emitter Sr 90 of about 25 me, behind it
~ lead cap; a band type emitter with prometheum Pm 147 of about 10
me capacity and a band type P, ~-.-emitter with radium Ra of about
1,Un capacity. Table 1 lists the ~_emltters used in measuring the
surface weight of textiles, i.e. the radio isotopes of carbon C 14,
sulphur S 35, prometheum Pm 147, thallium Tl 204 and strontium Sr 90;
their maximum energy In MeV; their half-life and their maximum Im-

the surface weight are produced In the CSR% 4Isomet BK?' produced
by the Optima Plant in Brno and Univel produced by the Mechanika
Cooperative in Prague. In addition to I-'- and -)-emitters the textile
industry also usesrj,-emitters, because they ionize the air at a short
distance, thus eliminating undesired electrostatic charges, which
occur In processing chemical flbers~5 The so-called open emitters
use radioactive chemicals and -are difficult to control and therefore
they are only used in laboratories. Cotton fiberKtreated with radio-
active compounds may be watched by detecting devices In the course of
all mechanical processes (see photographs 2 and 3). Photograph 2
shows an autoradiograph of cotton fibers impregnated with sod Ium lauryl too
sulphate containing isotope 3 35 sulphur for Identification. Photo-
graph 3 shows autoradlographs of microsections of silon fibers treated
with active sod Ium lauryl sulphate containing isotope S 35 for iden-
tification. The finishing, impregnation and dressing of textiles may
be automatically checked If sod ium phosphate containing the isotope
P 32 for identification pgposes Is admixed. The methods of detection
are so sensitive that 10 g of a radioactive compound may be detected.
Isotopes are al3o used to observe microprocesses in a fiber, for
example the penetration of the dyeing agent, washing agents etc. The

sulphate - may be observed by means of the sulphur isotope S 35.
Micro sections of silon fibers are shown on photograph 3. The
radio Isotope section of the Vkzkumn~ 6stav vlna~sk~ (Research In-
stitute for Cotton) and the Vkzkumn~ 6stav pleta~s* (Research In-
stitute for Hosiery) in Brno are doing research work in the field of
utilization of radio isotopes in the textile industry.

given for the lection of condensates of the above-mentioned chemicals for
treatment of polyamide fabrics. The reasons aro based, chiefly, on tile theory
of adhesion of macromolecular substances. An analysis of world technology in
the field of permanent fire-proofing of polyamide fabrics is given, and a new
method of internal thickening of the molecular structure for tile purpose of

Also a new waterproofing process is describe(] using a bath containing urea-
formaldehyde and melanine- formaldehyde condensates mixed at a given ratio with
a paraffine emulsion, the bath is used for imparting water- resistance properties
to the fabric by the Fulard technique. It is noted that polyamide fabrics treated
by this method have been in practical use for about five years. The fabrics also
