ABSTRACT: An investigation had been made to develop a 1rocesa for pro-
ducing bimetallic rails, i'.e, rails with a high-strengt' steel head.
St.5 steel billets clad with H75X, G13, or Rk5 alloy at els were hot-
rolled into 100 x 150 am bars which, after reheating, T. re rolled into
R-18 type rails. Rails with arc-deposited cladding haL the highest bond
strength and the most satisfactory surface quality. WI-h H75X or Rk5-

'ABSTRACT: The entrapment or droplets of an aqueous aerosol by relatively large
drops falling at a h1gh velocity (so that entrapment was purely inertial) was
studied. The amount of entrapment was measured by using an aerosol that con-
tained methylene blue as a tracer and determining the'smount of methylene blue
taken up by the larger drops. The coefficient of entrapment cc Increased con-
aiderably with a decrease In the size of the falling drops. The values of
calculated according to an empirical formula given by A. 0. Amelia and M. I#

iXBST11ACT: An analysis has been made of changes in the height and temperature'of
the tropopause on 0e basis of aeroclimatic data for 80 stations in the Soviet
Union, for the moot part over a 10-year period; neroclimatic data also were used
from 24 atations for the period 1950-1956. In addition, a special study was made
of the lower boundary of the tropopause and certain othnr parameters using IGY
data for stations along the air route between Mosc~v and Irkutsk. The text in
lar,-,e part is a commentary on the two significant maps compiled - four seasonal
maps of the beighVof the lo r boundary of the tropopause (Fig. I of the Eaclo-

boundary of the tropopause, temperature at the lower boundary of the tropopause
and wind velocity at the lower boundary of the tropopause (Fig. 2 of the Enclosure)
The classification of the tropopause developed at the Nauchno-iseledovatellskiy
institut acroklimatologii (Scientific Research Institute of Aeroclimatology) is
cited: type I - a tropospheric drop of temperature is replaced by isothermal con-
ditions or a very slight inversion; type II - a tropospheric drop of temperature
is replaced by isothermal conditions, which then are replaced by a considerable
inversion; type III -- a tropospheric drop is replaced by a considerable inversion;
type IV - a multilayer tropopauee. The characteristic curves of individual types
of tropopause are shown in Fig. 3 of the Enclosure. Figures 4-6 of the Enclosure
show curves of the Annual variation of typos of tropopause over different geogra-
phic regions of the SSSR. The text and figures in the original are supported by
detailed tables. Especially detailed information is given for the height of the
lower boundary of the tropopause, minialm temperature and level of the maxin=2
wind velocity along the air route from Moscow to Irkutsk. Orig. art. has: 6 fi-

ABSTRACTs Data on the obeervation of the tropopause at 19 different observation
points distributed over the southern part of tho Soviet Union between the lati-
tudes of 38-500 and, longitudes of 24-780 over a period from 1956 to 1960 are pro-

A13STRACT: The results of 74 airplane soundings of the atmosphere over Sverdlovsk
during Januar7 1958-1960 are reported. Special emphasis is placed ont 1) the
probable presence of clouds of medium and high strata and the number of clouds
at each stratum rated on a scalet from 0-2, 3-7p and 6-10 points; and 2) strati-
fication of cloudat probability of 3-j 2_~ and single-layer overcast. The study
was conducted in order to improve weather forecasting for aviation purposes. Data
were collected mainly during the ascent at 4 a.m. and 4 p,m. (every other day)#
The average height of the ascent was -, 7 Ian. The heights of lower and upper
limits of the clouds were registered for only the lower and medium strata; those

for the high strata (especially its upper limits) were insufficient for a
statistical study, Clouds of the upper stratum were observed in 45 cases, in 65%
of which they would have been obscured from the earth's surface by unbroken clouds 1
of the lower or inedium stratum. 'It van found that in the lower stratum the
probability of a clear sky increases toward evening and that the reverse is true
for the upper stratum. The study of the vertical cloud structure over Sverdlovsk
has shown that a three-layer stratum was found in 211% of all cases, single-layer
stratum 111 23%, and various combinations of two-layor cloud cover were found in
32%. Orig. art. hast 3 tables.

ABSTIUCT: In order to determine the Influence of the nature of the solvent on the
properties of an acrylonitrile - n-butyl methacrylate copolymer, the copolymerization
was carried out at different temperatures with different monomor ratios in ethyl other
and toluene In the-presence of the catalyst n-butylmagnesium bromide (0.4 mole of cat-
alyst per mole of acrylonitrile was used). The specific viscosities of the products
showed the presence of low-molecular substances. A decrease in reaction temperature
raised the spacifio viscosity of the copolymorl this being characteristic of an anion-
ic mechanism of polymerization of the mo'nomers. Since the Grignard reagents conati-
Itute a complex equilibrium mixture and because of the presence of (14gX)+, (mmg)+ or
i (Mg)++ ions, the initiation of the copolymerization may involve a stage of formation
,of intermediate complexes; in this casep the nature of the sol"nt and the conditions
lof the reaction medium play a considerable part in the initiation process. Orig. art.

from those obtained by the Hartree-Fock method with small angles
can be explained by insufficient accounting for the exchange of
outer electrons in heavy atoms, or by special properties of the

ABSTRACT: A colorimetric method was developed for determining Cr with carmo-
azine which produces a stable red-violet color with Cr in the 0.2-3 y
/cc range; Fd~ impedes the colorimetric determinalion; the
presence of Mn2+, CoZ~, Nilf, A13~, N106~, Nol. and Cl- is permis-
sible in the following concentrations, respectively: 4000, 50, 60,
320, 50, 8000, and 1000 y/cc. and V5~ 12.5-y in 25 cc K and Na
have no effect on the colorimetric determination The mean relative
error of a determination in steel is 1.1.16%, The sequence of mixing
and of addition of reagents, in contrast with the diphenylcarbazide
method, have no effect on the result. The determination is carried
out an an FEK-M colorimeter in 20-mn-i cells at 619mli with a

ABSTRACT: The authors consider that the article of Professor I.N. Pu-
tilova and Docent G.A. Raytsyn in Nr 7 of this periodical
was published at the proper time, as it substantiates the
necessity to bring the teaching of chemistry closer to the
speciality of the respective vtuz, to revise the theoretical
part of the courso's program and to entitle the various vuzes
to compose their own programs according to their individual
sections. The authors (Personnel of the Chairs of Inorganic
and Organic Chemistry of the Novocherkassk Polytechnical In-
stitute) set forth in the present article their considerations

The Training of ipecialists in Chemistry - to Attain the Level of New Tasks.
Our Considerations
scribe how instruction in chemistry is organized in the In-
stitutela various faculties. Since the number of students
coming from plants is increasing year to year, and as many
of them require a review course, the most important sections
of elementary chemistry should be retained. The idea of
specializing chemistry according to the type of vuz is ab-
solutely correct.

SOURCE: Izobret prom obraz tov zn, no. 14, 1966, 130
TOPIC TAGS: cadmium, electrolytic deposition, metal plating
ABSTRACT: This Author's Certificate introduces a method of electroly-tic cadmium
plating from electrolytes based on cadmium sulfate with the addition of ethylenedi-
waine and joiner's Slue. High quality-coatings are produced by deposition from an
electrolyte containing complex compounds of cadmium with pyrophosphate having the
following composition: cadmium sulfate (CdSO4-2-51i2O) -26 g/ij potassium pyrophos-
phate (K2P2O7t3H2O)-200 g/X; joiner's glue-1 g/t; ethylenediamine (20% aqueous so-
lution)--20 ml/t. The plating is done at a current density of 0.5-1.0 a/dm2 and a
temperature of 25-600C.
