ABSTRACT: In the previous paper (Ref 1) dealing with the complex com-
pounds of zirconium tetrachloride with esters of monGbasic
acids it was shown. that the formation of the comploxes of
the type ZrCl 4 *2RCOORI is accompanied by an intensification
of the polar properties. In such complex compounds zirconium
has the coordination number 6 which is characteristic of this
element. According to Sidgwick (Ref 2) it shows coordination
numbers of the order 5, 6, 7 and 8 in its complex compounds.
It is the aim of the present ,,aper to investigate the presence
of complexes where zirconium has the minimum coordination
number five. Therefore, compounds of the composition

tivo method, and with reapoct to the polar and cryoscopic
properties, The determination method of the dipole moments,
molecularweights and the purification of the used products
had alreaAy been described in an earlier paper (Refs 1, 3, 4)-
The following complexes were separated and analyzed:
ZrCl 4' HCOOC211 5" ZrCl 4* HCOOC3 IfVZrC1 4' C115 COOC2 if 5$
ZrC1 4' CH3 COOO5 H7dnd ZrC! 4* C3 H7 COGC9H 5 -.* Tjie-ir dipole moments
were determined in benzene. It was found that with increasiug
partial weight of the aiid radical in ether the dipol e momen
of the complex decreases. The molecular weights of the above-
mentioned complexes were determined according to the cryo-
scopic method, The cause for the tendency of the complexes
towards association was explained. The triple'tomplexes
ZrCl 4* HCOOC2H5' C6H6and ZrCl 4' HCOOC2 11 5~C6H 5CH3were also
separated and analyzed. There are 12 tables and 8 references,
4 of which are Soviet.
