TEXT: Since knowledge of the second virial coefficient is necessary
for
the exact determination of data for the equilibrium between liquid
and
vapor, the authors investigated the system acetone - chloroform
which is
typical of systems with maximum boiling point. Purified CHC1 3 and
(CH 3~co
were vaporized in a chamber through which dry nitrogen was blown.
The
chamber was designed by the Laboratoriya vysokikh davleniy GIAP
(Laboratary
of High Pressures of the GIAP) (I. R. Krichevskiyq Yu. V.
Tsekhanskaya,
Zh. fiz. khimii, 10, 2315, 1956). The compressibility of mixtures
containing 14-13; 32-401 44-501 and 74-59 M014 of acetone was
measured,
and the second virial coefficient B m determined.. Experimental data

ABSTRACT: The authors discuss the theory and results of a
susceptibility-meter attachment' to an ordinary field
magnetometer (Schmidt balance). This device permits
measurement of susceptibility and residual magnetism of
samples of magnetic sedimentary rocks as well as of
magmatic rocks under field conditions with a satisr
factory degree of precision. The mter consists of'
two susceptibility solenoids connected in series,
Card 1/3 through which an electric current is passed, and which

A Field Apparatus for Determining the Magnetic (Cont.)
is placed over the magnetic system of the magnetometer. Whan,
identical solenoids-are.placed.symmetrically in~,relatlon to the
magnetic system of.the balance, the reading of the magnetom .eter
does not change. - Wheh-a sample is introduced into one of Vlae
solenoids, it acquirea.an induced magnetic moment proportional
to its suseeptibility,,and.the reading of the magnetometer
changes, permitting determination of the susceptIbility. ThLe
sample to be measured is ground and placed in a test tube. By
using uncrushed samples cut into cubes, it is also possible to
measure the residual magnetism. The authors give detailed
accounts of the apparatus, including the results of calibration.
For measuring susceptibility,, the instrument iscalibrated by
using a cylindrical coil; but for residual magnetism a rec-
tangular coil is used. Comparative measurements were suppl(3-
mented by several other measurements both in the susceptibility
meter and on a lambda-static magnetometer as well as on an
instrument of A. G. Kulashnikov. The results reveal -a systam-
atic small dev.-lation, apparently associated with insufficient
precision in determining the meter constants. H:)w8ver, this

In research In magnetometry. It may also be useflul to advanced
students in the same field.
COVERAGE: The book-presents methods for solving dir!ct and

both Soviet and non-Soviet literature up to and including 1956.
The book consists of three parts each of which is preceded by a
brief introduction giving a description and general statedents
relating to the methods cited. The first part is devoted to the
direct problem of magnetic surveying. It considers analytical
(Chs. I and III) and graphical (Ch. II) methods for solving the
direct problem. The general methods for obtaining calculation
formulas for magnetic.fields In the case of homogeneous mag-
netization are described in the introduction to the first part.
All formulas are cited without derivations. Bodies bounded by
surfaces of the second order are separately treated from the
bodies of a given form for which the solution of the direct
problem is presented. Throughout the book universally adopted
designations of bodies are used. Where necessary, a descrip-
tion of the distribution of the magnetic charges along the
body surface is given below the name of the body. The second
part contains material for solving the inverse problem of mag-
netic surveying. Methods are considered for determining depth
and dimensions of a body which require preliminary assumptions

regarding the shape of the body (Cho. I, II0 III) and also
methods for which this condition is not necessary (Ch. IV).
Descriptions of these methods and general conditions for their
use are given In the introduction to the second part; each method
is given without any recommendations as to its application. The
third part is auxiliary and deals with calculations of the gravi-
totional and magnetic potential and its derivatives in the upper
halfspace and in the plane of observations. This material Is also
presented Nfthout wdt4tement of the methods used in obtaining the
formulas. Single designations are Introduced in the book, the
-explanation of which Is given at the beginning of the book In a
general list. In several sections some of the fozmulas are
derived
by the authors. The following personalities are mentioned:
V. N. Strakhov (method of isolines), B. A. Andreyev (method of
limit distributions), T. N. Simonenko-Rose and A. P. &zanskiy
(integral formulas), Yu. N. Grachev, V. F. Pyatnitskiy,

ABSTRACT: An electrodeless discharge was brought about in a quartz
tube
(of 30 mm diameter and 300 mm length), which was provided with a
solenoid winding (50-150 coils). A generator high-frequency cur-
rent of 6 megacycles was fed to this winding. As shown by an
illustration the tube was connected to a flask containing the sub-
stance to be investigated, the receiving flask for the condenr-
sation. of the decay products, and a three-my faucet. The substance
me frozen-in in a flask and the air was pumped out of the tube.
After thawing of the substano,3 (with the pump being continuously
connected) its vapors entered the discharge section of the babe.
For t~e purpose of recording the spectnm a quartz spectrograph

observed.
The relative intensity of the imparity bands vas inversely
pro-
portional to the pressure of methane. The discharge in the
vapors
of methyl alcohol (according to bands and lines) resulted in:
CH, OH, GO, H2, H, GII GI, and in th-j case of vupor not

of
the band- and line intensities on the pressure and vellocity

neotion that the increase of the blackening of i;he CO-strips
with OH-strips remaining unchanged and with a deer-ease of
the
velocity of pumping out leads to the concLasion that CO is a.
product of secondary and _OH a product of prlwry reactions.

ABSTRACT:. ~.By a.ohan*ge'_jn the quantity ratio. of solvent

carrier asAiell-as by-.the use of a-mixture of 2 or-more
solvents the sorbent propertie~'a can be changed over 'a wide
range in the above-mentioned method. The investigations of the
separation of hydrocarbons by this method (Refs 2-5) have so
far been concerned with saturated hydrocarbons or with such
above C 4-C5' In the present case the effect of the nature of
the stable phase on the separation of hydrocarbons between
2 and C5 are studied. The investigations werecarried out by
means of the usual chromatographic apparatus (Ref 6). The
data obtained from the apparatus were automatically recorded
On the Separation of Hydrocarbons C 2 _* C5 by the SOV/32-25-2-13/78

by a potentiometer EPP-09. Non-polar solvents (Vaselin, tri-
isobutylene)as well as weakly polar (oe-methyl naphthalene,
dibutyl phthalate) and highly polar solvents (dimethyl form-
amide),were used, and it was.found that the Henry coefficient
of gaseous hydrocarbons can bechanged and conditions for a
complete separation achieved by changing the nature of the
solvent. However noteven an optimum ratio of solvent and
sorbent carrier will permit a complete separation of the
isomers of C4 and C5 hydrocarbons. This is only made possible
by adding I % Vaselin to dimethyl'formamide (on a brick
sorbent carrier ) or 6-5 % trii-sobutylene (on a diatomite
sorbent carrier). By mixing the 41 solvents-a continuous change
of the polarity of the stable phase can be achieved and thus
it is possible to choose the conditions for sepa:~ating
saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons between C 2 and C 5 and
their isomers. There are 3 figures, 1 table, and 15 references,
