ABSTRACT: The exist! ng Soviet standard method ( rOCT 7187-54) of de-
termining the barfum content in automobile and diesel oils
and in additions to these riils consists in ashing the oil
(or the addition) and consequent treating of the ash in a
sulfuric acid solution a-ad determining the addition by the
barium sulfate eedimant. This method requires up to 14
hours time and is not' perfect.- since such additions as
MATHM-33911 dn nct ash completely. Besidesp the method,
requires holding the cru-,Jble at a temperature of not over
5500C for 6 to 8 hoursq for othexwi3e the silicon acid will
pass from the crucibles into the ash and the test result

a new method which elim4.nates to a considerable degree the
aforementioned drawbacks. This now method consists in the
following. The addition or the oil containing an addition,
will be kept at 5500C for one hour, during which time the
carbon will be not fully burned. The obtain,~rd ash will be
treated under heating by concentrated sulfuric acid (in the
presence of nitric acid) until the uediment is completely
dissolved, the rest of the oarbon burned and the nitric acid
removed. This operation takes half an hour. The colo.'rless.
solution, now free cX organic compounds, will be diluted by
water. This causes a precipitation of barium sulfate. This
sediment will be filtered off~ washed, dried by heating,
and weighed. If the barium 3olution~ which is usually clear
in concentrated aulfur.ic acid, bcoDmes turbid in the presence
of silicon ac-.'dg the obtal.ned barium sulfate must be treated
by fluoric acid. A comparison test on pure reagents in pla-
tinum cruc.-;.bles proved both methods close in accuracy of
analysisq but the KIAT method is the more accurate.
