ABSTRACT: Changes in the design of the neutraliser, namely a,
decrease in the space between the bubbler for steam-
ammonia mixture and the bottom of the neutraliser and
introduction of the feed of the mother liquor directly
under the bubbler improved the operation of the
neutraliser and the yield of pyridine bases from 4 kg
to 13-14 kg/ton of ammonia sulphate. There is 1 figure.

ABSTRAM Difficullies encountered in operating the ammonia-lime
plant with an external reactor and settling tank and their
solution are described. The main difficulty was the
precipitation of calcium sulphate in the second
distillation column. To prevent this the temperature in
the reactor and settling tank was increased (by 2-3 OG
above the temperature in the column) by increasing the
pressure under which they were operating. In addition
the outlet of the mixture of liquor and lime from the
reactor into the settling tank was made from the upper
part of the reactor (Fig 4) which maintained a constant

AB.STRACT: The effe of pressure,Ideformation, contact area and speed on the abrasion
of rubberized materiM was studied. ` Wingle- or double-sided rubberized cotton fabrics
were subjected to abrasion on a newly developed tester (see p. 238 in this same collection)
A linear relationship was shown to exist between pressure (0. 3-5 kg/cm2) and N, the
number of friction cycles required for the destruction of material; but a number of criUcal
ratios of pressure contact area (and the related radius of the sample holder) and defer-
mation were established at which a rapid change in the fabric properties occurs add

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this work was:to invest *igate in detail the interaction of`1
pheno.'L'formaldehyde resins with polyvinyl chloride to produce phenolat es. The in-
vestigation consisted of thermogravimetric. and.thermomechanical measurements. For
thermomechanical measurements specimens were produced by pressing. A polarizing
..!microscope with a heated $tage was used for micro3tructural analysis of specimens.
A comparison of thermograptiie and thermomechanical properties of the starting resins,
land their coobination' products indicates that the combination of polyvinyl chloridei
with phenolformaldehyde resins in.the presence of hexamethylenetetramine results in
cross linking of phenolfomaldehyde resins with polyvinyl chloride by methylene

TITLE: Immersion liquids for crystallo-optical studies at low
temperatures (-1000C)
PERIODICALs Zhurnal neorganicheakoy khimii, v. 6, no. 8, 1961, 1754-1758
TEXTs This study concerns the determination of optical constants of
crystals in wide temperature ranges from +250 to -1000C using the immer-
sion method by means of a thermostat installed in a PC-10 (GS-10) goniom-
eter. The method worked out permits a determination of refractive indices
at temperatures to -150 'OC with an accuracy of 0.50C. The tempersture con-
stance was controled with an 3"nb-01 (EPV-01) or MPU~ffp-54 (MRShchPr-54)
electron potentiometer. Several immersion liquids with refractive indices
of 1-378 - 1-705 were used for determining the refractive indices of
crystals at a temperature below -1000C. The refractive index of crystals
is calculated from the formula: N a ______2 is IV-he refractive

index and A the prismatic angle. The dependence of refractive indices on
the temperature of the respective liquids is expressed by a line whose
angle of inclination depends on the refractive indices of the liquids.

Abstract No differences were revealed in the content of nucleic
acids, lipids and peroxidaze in granulocytes of premature-
ly and nOrMallY born infants as well as of grownups. How-
ever, in granulocytes of neonates: regardless of the stage
Of fetal development,, the alkaline phosphatase content in-
creased sharply. This testifiea to the existence of in-
tensified leukocytic metabolism as a reaction to birth
trauma in neonates. -- A. I. "rladshteyn.

s is th6 energy dPp at k-O~ X, and is the-Fermi level. On the
basis of the foregoing considerations, the Hall constant is calculated,, and
.it isshown that if 0=0 is put in the foregoing fprmulas, the respect.ive
expressions for the parabolic band will be obtained. The non-parabolic
structure of the conduction band can produce measurable effects only in the
case of samples.with I.arge.amounts of impurities. At low temperatures,
high concentrations of the latter cause strong degeneracy of their electron
gas. Degeneracy can be especially strong in indium antimonide. Calcula-
tion of the effective mass for different electron concentrations shows full
agree6ent with experimental data. The foll6vrirg expredsions are obtained

where n i.s the electron concentration, and N. the double number of
acceptors. As these quantities are unknown, a comparison with experimen-
tal results, such as those obtained by Tauc and Matyas (Tauc, J.,
Matyas, M., Czech. J- Ph.Ys., 5-, 369, (1955))is difficult. In Fig. 3,
different values of Ni are assumed, and the resultant values of electrical
conductivity are plotted versus the electron concentration. Fig- 5
(electrical conduct.ivity versus temperature) indicates lack of consistency
with the experimental data. The source of error may reside in the fact
that for magnetic fields of 2000 oe, the classical theory of the Hall
effect ceases to be valid. The author thanks Professor Doctor L.Sosnowski,

of the electric resistance near the natural conductivity in Ge Subjected to
bombarding by fast neutrons in a reactor. The dependence of the thermo-enf on
the irradiation time was calculated and compared with the experiment on the
basis of the experimental dependence of the electric conductivity on the irra-

some confirmations of the assumption regarding the presence of four minima in

ABSTRACT:. The transport equation is solved for the case in which
external magnetic and electric fields as well as temp erature con-
centration gradients are present. All calculations are carried out
for energy surfaces of arbitrary shape. The electric current and
heat flux are expressed in terms of three fundamental tensors. The
case of ellipsoidal energy surfaces with a nonquadratic dependence of
the energy on the absolute value of the wave vector is analyzed in
detail. The transport equation is solved for an arbitrary energy

~In' the case of free carriers, the Kerr effect is associated with bire-
'fringence due to the strong dc electric field applied to the specimen.
!The formulas for the phase shift 0. and the dichroism 6 were derived. They
:show-that the phase shift is proportional to 1/,d, while 4the dichroism
iconsists of two terms, the first one proportional to 1/w and the second
'one propoitional to 1/6124 where w is the frequency of the electromagnetic
wave. For 'a
.parabolic band, the second t" valmishes. Thus, the fre
quency dependenciof the dichroism 6 can be the criterion of the non-
paraboli'city of the band,
