Abstract [Authors' English sumary nodified]j The active fraction is ob-
tained from the 7S fraction of game globulins. Gams-l-M-globulin in not
increased. Administration of antigen from the brain of a patient dead from
the disease resulted in correlation of the complement-fixing antibodies-
'with increase in the gamma globulin fraction. Them* antibodies are specific
for this disease. In subacute cases serum immunoglobulins should be *xamined.

In her 5th decade a patient began to observe a symmetrical ptosis of both upper
eyelids. It developed during 12 yr. Into a complete symmetrical ptosis, which was
corrected by plastic operation. Family anamnesin proved the occurrence o(progres-
sive external ophth.almoplegia in 3 gerogrations. In total, 12 members of the family
fell W. Objectively they all had facies myopathica. bilateral ptosis, compensatory
wrinkling of the forehead. In most of the patients the m. levator palp. sup. and m.
rectus sup. were relaxed bilaterally. the m. rectus nasalis asymmetrically, The
other muscles were altered bilaterally. especially the neck part of the m.trape%ius
and m. sternocloidomestoldeus. Also atrophy of the mm. supraspirati, infraspinall
and rhomboldel was found. The histological finding from an excision of the m. lev.
palp. sup. was as follows. muscle fibres of various lengths (&v. diam. 15-40 )A.)
with rather diffuse bundles of fibres sporadically degenerated. atrophic In some
places, with disappearance of the outlintis of the sarcolemma and nuclei. In the
ame fibre cross-striation to marked In some places, In others It has ceased to

xist. In many places cellular nuclei do not exist any more. Besides decaying
.fibres there are sometimes nuclei arranged In lines, swollen, globular or slightly
oval, with an Intensively coloured nucleoluo and chromatin arranged on the peri-
phery. There is secondary increase of the fat tissue. Affected nerve fibres show

The authors examined the ~slgnificance of the cellular factor influencing the sedi-
mentation of erythrocytes in 190 normal and diseased persons. A significant dif-
ference exists between the group of normid persons and the group of patients -
suffering from malignant tumours (after excluding leukaemia. and cases with proved
metastases to the liver). This difference proves that in malignant tumours the
positive cellular factor plays a certain part. This positive cellular factor results
chiefly from pulmonw7 and gynatcological tumours. The experiments of Wuhrmann
and Wunderly on the positive cellular factor in leukaemia and hepatic metastases
have been confirmed. (V. 2. 16).
