TITLE: Electron T t e in the electric discharge used for the argon ion laser
SOURCE: Zhurnal eksperimentallnoy I teoreticheskay fiziki. Pialm V redaktaiyu.

charge
ABSTRACT: This Is a continuation of an earlier investigation (Dokl. AN SSSR* in
press) of the charged-particle concentration and the gas temperature in argon under
conditions typical of the operation of a continuously operatine ionic argon laser.
The results indicated that the decisive influence on the ion motion In the discharge
column is exerted by the drift of the ions to the wall and their recombination. Tha
present investigation was devoted to a determination of the electron temperature in
a discharge of this type. Measurements were made of the half-width of the Ar 11
lines radiated transverse to the discharge in a tube of 2.8 mm diameter and -40 cm,
length, with a bypass cl=nel. The 9 9 essure ranged from 0.21 to o.62 Torr and
the current density from 150 to 350 @cx The results show that the width of the
Ar 11 line increases with increasing current density. The width Mi.L of the line

radiated transverse to the channel exceeds the width C&R, of the 21ne radiated along
'the discharge by a -factor -1.5- 2. From-the values of the authors determined
the "effective temperature" of the Ions transverse to the discharge wA the electron
temperature Too Te increases from 5 x 10' to 9 x 10* (for p - 0.37 Torr) when the
Ar
current density rises from 150 to 350 a/cm2, am is expected to reach 13 x 104K at,.,.
J - 550 a/cm2. It follows from the results that the increase of the intensity of the
spontaneous radiation of the Ar 11 lines and the Increase of the power of the co-
herent radiation of the laser with increasing current density In the capillary are
due primarily to the increase in the electron temperature. The electric-conductivity
cross sections (Qa) calculated from the electron temperature are equal to 8 x 10-1-0
cm2 at 5 x 104K and 6 x 10-16 cm2 at 9 x 104Ks The electron density No is also cal-
culated from the temperature and agrees with the values experimentally determined
from the half-width of the hydrogen line Hp. It In concluded that the investigations
have yielded the basic characteristics of the discharge used for the argon ionic
laser, which are of undisputed interest for the explanation of the mec@Anism that
ensures population inversion. Although the increase of Te with current density is
not subject to doubt$ the absolute values of the temperature must be verified by
other independent methods. The authors thwik A. A. Rukhadze for valuable discussions
and advice. Orig. art. haal 1 figure# 2 formulas, and 1 table.

The authors describe a linear electron accelerator with a travel-
ling wave of 3.5 Mev energy. A waveguide loaded with disks is used as accelerating
system. The necessary law of wave phase velocity variation is brought about by
variation or the diameter of the apertures in the disks. The 280-cm long wave-
guide is divided Into three sections. 'In the first section, the phase velocity
is varied from 0.5 to 0.97 os in the second and third section it Is equal to 0.98
and 0.99 o respectively, 7he electron equilibrium phase lncreues during the
acceleration process; its initial value in equal to 450 and is chosen according
