ABSTRACT: The authors state that fortifications in barren, desert
and mountain areas always are a difficult problem, which
to a degree was solved by the use of bags filled with
earth, Bags of textile material, with all their
qualities of strength, nevertheless are expensive and
easily rot in the ground. In this respect, paper bags
are preferable. They are made of several layers of
solid paper, some of which are bituminized. The
paper is glued together longitudinally. The bags are
of 2 standard sizes: 80 x 32 112 cm or 60 x 25 Cm
when filled and weighing 35 kg. Another size is 220

within which the neutron flux increases up to e-fold its amount).
Tho temperature coefficient was measured and shown it, form of
a graph. The dissociation rate of the molecules UP6 waz de-
termined as amounting to 0,32 mol/kWh. The addition of chloro-
trifluoride shows that working conditions can be found in which
stability of radiation of the urani,im-hexafluoride in the re-
actor can be attained. A. M. Susova assisted in assembling the
apparatus in collaboration with A. k. Krasin. There are 12 fig-

TITLE: A 500 keV Electron-beam Source
PERIODICAL: Pribory i tekhnika eksperimenta, 1961, No. 3,
pp@ 26 - 32
TEXT: A description is given of an electron-beam source
which is capable of producing 250 IiA at 500 keV. The beam
source consists of an electron gun and an electrostatic
accelerating system of the type described by A.P. Grinberg (Ref.1-
Method-of charged-particle acceleration, P-57, 1950,Gostekhizdat)
and in Ref. 2 C'Engineering", 1959, Vol. 187, No. 4857, P-466).
A schematic drawing of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 3. All
the dimensions Indicated In this figure nre in mm. The high-
voltage part is mounted on the base plate 2 , which is fixed
to the end of the outer jacket I . The high-voltage electrode
4 is supported by the posts 3 . The rotor 5 is located
between the bass plate and the high-voltage electrode. The
axis of the rotor is kept in position by the massive supports 6

The supports, rotor and pillars of the high-voltage electrode
are made of perspex. Tile rotor is rotated by the motor 7
(2 850 r.p.m.) through the perspex drive 8 and a pair of
conical gears 9 and 10 (brass and textolite, respectively).
All.the high-voltage details of the machine are in an SF6
atmosphere. The outer diameter of the rotor is 36 cm and the
charged surfaces move at a rate of 35 m1s. The design of the
charge and discharge device is shown in Fig. 4. The charging
voltage is applied between the plates located in the grooves
of the rotor and the brushes (a',et of sew:Lng needles).
Tile distance between the needles is 2 nun and the distance
between the ends of the needles and the plates is 3 mm. The
width of the"brusil'is 22 mm. The brushes and the plates are
insulated from the base plate. The perspex drive of the motor
7 also drives the generator 11. The latter generator is used
to supply the electron Sun. The acceleratinS tube 12 iz ahown
ingreater detail j@n P:lr,. 6., and -is also made of perspex. It
contains the Intermediate chrom:Lum--plated bass electrodes 13 -

These intermediate elec-trodss aro connected to the contact
electrodes III and the outside of the tube. The Becond
version of the tube is shown in Fig. 6. The first tube was
found to withstand voltages up to 420 kV for short periods
of time and up to 320 kV continuously,, The second version
withstands up to 600 kV over short periods of time and up to
500 kV othelwise. T113 electron gun 16 is of the three-
electrode type (Electron Microscopes (edited by A.A. LebedevJ

Cf tungsten wire, 0.01 mra in diameter, and the focusing (18) and
accelerating (19) elec@trodea hai?a inserts such that the diameter
of the apertures in them can easily be altered. The position
of the cathode is regulated by the bellows 20 and threi
adjusting screwf3 21 . The cathode lies within the glDs-
cylinder 22 so that. it can be viewed from outside. The
accelerating elec@trode is maintained at 0 kV relative to the
cathode. The beam curr9nt is regulated by controlling the
cathode supply and the pctantial difference between the cathode
and the focusing electrod,4. The diameter of the electron beam

ABSTRACT: In spite of the recently increased interest in the lanthanides, catalytic
chemistry of ytterbium in the hydrogen peroxide dissociation processes can only be

AUTHOR: Ede Kertai (Budapest)
TITLE.- The Lights of the Danube
@INo (USSR)
PERIODICAL- Nauka I zhizn', 19599,', , 5, pp 41-43
ABSTRACT: The author describes the Nagymaras z Power Station to be con-
structed near Vist1wiLlit' (the old CapiLal of Hungary) under an
agreement signed between Hungary and Czechoslovakia In Octo-
ber 1958. The importance of this power station is stressed,
because Hungary has but small deposits of very poor quality
brown coal while@ on the other hand, she has rich deposits
of bauxite, requiring much electricity for processing. Dur-
ing the preparatory stage, the flow of the Danube was sur-
veyed by photographing Illuminated floats, coming down the
river at night. The first dam will be ?60 m long, raising
the water 7-5 M (1-5 m. above the highest level in the spring),
The reservoir will be 110 sq/km in area. There will be 10
hydroturbines of a combined 120,,000 kw. There are 4 photo-
Card 1/1 graThs and 3 drawings.
