stabilized nonlinear dielectric element) in a parametric frequency'
multiplier, and experimental results are given. The tandel pro-
perties are expressed by means of an equivalent circuit formed by
a pa:~aliel colUbination of a nonlinear los3loss capacitor and a
nonlinear resistor. The dependence of 0-i capacWance and the
conductance. of the equivalent circuit on the- Voltage-Ts--expressed
by the first terms of a power series. The expansion coefficients
of the-nonlinear capacitance and conductance into the power series

ABSTRACT: An instrument for countinr, beta entssion Bi-210 and CS-137 in biolo-
gical and aquatic spec-L-nens has been used by the Instytut Badan' Jadrcn4ych
(Institute of Nuclear Research)in Warsaw for the past two years. Its design
principle is similar to that -of the 1-11ARLE_~-JAALL-FISENNE lo,,r-background beta
counter (HARLEY J. H., et altera, Nucleonics 20, 59-61~ 1962). The pulses from
the Dhototube go first to the amplifier with a constant gain of 500., then to
the scaler. A "scintillating plastic disc, 17 mm diameter and 0.3 mm. thick is
used as detector and is optically coupled to-the photomultiplier tube. "The
shielding consists of a lead chamber and chalk. slabs. The efficiency of this

device depends on the phototube potential, amplifier gain, discrimination level
and the mass of the scintillating di.,qc.t It was found that with potassium chloride:

'Unlike in the MRLEY-HALL-FISENNE case, the insertion of a 5 MM lucite disc
between the photo-tube and the scint-1.1lating plastic did not reduce the back-
ground of the counter. The beta counting efficiency of this device was tested
on sr-go + Y-go (o.54+2.26 Miev) and on C-14 (0-155 Mev)., Cs-137. "The author

AESTRACT: The paper proposes a modification of the method published in Nukleonika
(8,, 69.. 1963) for determining cesium-137 in water and urine, where the detection
limit was found to be 22 and 51 picocuries, respectively, on the basis of ion
exchange on ammonium molybdophosphate matsj, especially convenient for routine
measurements of personal contaminations. This modification,, permitting detec-
