ABSTRACT: In introducing statistical quality controjilor in
selecting a machine suitable for machining to a given
dimension it is necessary to know the accuracy of the
machine for the particular manufacturing operation
which it has to perform. Hitherto, the accuracy was
evaluated on the basis of test results from which the
accuracy criterion was calculated; from the point of
view of mathematical statistics this is a point
evaluation. The author describes the so-called interval
estimation criterion of the accuracy of a machine which
reflects to a greater extent the fluctuations in the
criterion determined on the basis of measurements on a
certain selection of produced components. According
to this method two limit values are specified and the

certain preliminarily selected probability. The
accuracy criterion is defined as the ratio of the
divergencies in the real manufacture to the specified
value of the tolerances, K = (L/T) 100,%. It is stated
that the selected criteria allow rapid decision on what
machine should be used economically to ensure a given
required precision. Nomograms are included which
facilitate analysis of the production process from the
point of view of the individual production operations. ru
These nomograms enable easy evaluation of the precision
criteria of a machine and the preliminary calculations
can be carried out with a minimum of effort. The
nomograms reproduced in this paper are suitable for use
by engineering personnel who are not qualified
mathematical statisticians. An example is included of
determining the limits of the accuracy criteria for a
single spindle automatic lathe used for turning a shaft
