Such, tracei;wjght have formed during -;'jhe period of IMP-1 observation. Direct testing ia impssible bedaiise data -q be adduced, on the plasma are not yet published, but supporting evidence The magnetic field was somewhat above average at the -time of tixese ~ obF arvaUonoe J Other factors suggesting pre-Alfven currents were the absence bf ~ a: fast shink wave and the development of sudden tangential rupture. 'A comparison of mag7netio records from M-1 and from high-latitude terrestrial obim-vat-bries shown that, disturbances in outer space corresponded to disturbances on the earth. To test the validity of the view concerning pre-Alffe'n currents 0. soD'Ar:,' wind duping tile period of comparison, the author measuredthe beginning bf the': disturbing pulse on the earth and in outer space, Ifthe pulse-was the ill'itiai.pulse of the edrth trace, directed upward along the currents i.e., if the pi~lso wraige at tho boundary of the magnotosphereo it should have been observed 2-3 ~inuteo~aarlier ort the oarth! than in outer space at 30 earth radii. But if the puls.e..came to the earth from o-lier space (30 R), then it should have been observ'ed in outer~,space 3-4 minutes -Xore it was detected on earth. Observation indicates that the pulse wes ,obierve& un earth before it was in outer, space. The distribution of the horizontal vectors of the geomagnetic changes along the earth's surface during the main phase was computed, and the results are plotted on a map. It was established that geomagnetic changes can be represented by four current loops in the ionosphere situated symmetrically to the equator and the meridian and passing through the epicenter of the explosion. The author believes that his distribution pattern is mDre precise than that of Japanese scientists. Orig art. has: 1 figure and 1 formula.
