ABSTRACT: The geomagnetic effect of the high-altitude nuclear explosion Starfish
on 9 July 1962 above Johnston Island has been investigated using data from 72 geo-
magnetic stations. The distribution of the horizontal vectors of the geomagnetic
changes along the earth's surface during the main phase was computed, and the results
are plotted on a map. It was established that geomagnetic changes can be represented
by four current loops in the ionosphere situated symmetrically to the equator and
the meridian and passing through the epicenter of the explosion. The author believes
that his distribution pattern is mDre precise than that of Japanese scientists. Orig
