PURPOSE: This book is intended for scientists knd engineers in heat engineering and
chemical technology and for students and teachera of hig~aer educational institar
tioAs in these fields.
COVERAGE: This collection ccutains articles relating to analytical and experimental
investigations of heat - and mass-transfer under coriditions of phase and chemical
transformations. A new method of solving unstes4-state heat-flcnr prol?lems is pre-
sented. Methods of determining heat - and Tapse-transfer coefficients during the
heating and drying of a emposite substance are given. New axperimedtaI principles
of surface heat- and mass-transfer in vaporization processes are explained and new

ABSTRACT: The author examines the general mode of solving one-dimensional in-
homogeneous problems in heat conductivity in the case of inhomogeneous
boundary conditions of the third kind. The solution is sought for in
tIL- form of a sum of some (two or three) functions that satisfy a homo-
geneous and inhomogeneous equationlrespectively; these functions also
satisfy various boundary and initial conditions. The author goes into
particular detail in the case of a problem involving boundary conditions
of the first kind. Each of -the functions into wbich the general solution
is broken up, is found with the aid of a Laplace transform. The author
Card 1/2 derives a series of transformations of the obtained solutions, which allow

them to be presented in various forms; as an eigenfunction series, as integrals
containing theta tunctions, and as an integral series. He investigates, in particular,
the transition to semi-limited and unlimited rods, as well as some other particular
cases.

'ABSTRACT% An analytic study was made to determine the radial distribution of

~First, the first order Volterra equation is approximated Nfirst order, linear'
ialgebraic equations, where.N is the number of radiation zones into which the'gas.:.
.eous medium is divided, and in each of which constant average values are used ford
.X (r) and BV (r,T). Numerical combutations are carried out for 11 - 10. Then the
is assumed optically thin (thickness less than 0.2) and the "ch" term ("r-~

ariff-77-in-Fe-a-1 featul:es of acute suppurative inediastinitis
( R u s s i a n t e x t) KHIRURGIJA 1956. 32112 (19-24)
This is a contribution on the basis of 46 clinical and of 22 patho-analonILL'al obSelwa-
tions and on the ground or the analysis of 154 case histories. Besides its division
into primary and secondary mediastinitis, differentiation must be mide N-tween a-
cutee lymphadenitis of the mediastinum, abscesses, phlegrnons, and anterior and
posterior medlastinitis. It is suggested that the s)mptoms of acute niediastinitis be
systematized as follows: (1) general, (2) those which depend on the pressure of the
orvans, the nerves and the vessel of the inedinstinum, (3) discoverable by physical
examination, (4) discoverableby X-ray examination and (5) discoverable by Illstru-
mental, laboratory and special methods. Diagnostic punctures of the lylediastinuni are
of littleuse indiffuse mediastinitis andare not without danger in mediastinalabscesses
in the zone of trachcobronchial lymphatic nodes. In most cases acute suppurative
mediastinitis develops secondarily as a complication of various suppurative processes.
being disguised by the symptoms of the primary disease. Its diffuse forms with a .
severe clinical course occur most frequently. Suppurative IN-Tnphadenitisof the lymph
nodes of the mediastinurn occur as an independent form of & disease. Active su'rgi-
cal interference with the suppurative focus in combination with the application of
antibiotics and with symptomatic therapy is the only effective method in the treat-
ment of such patients. Cervical mediastinotomy according to V.I. ltazumovskii is
helpful. Special attention should be paid to the state of the cardio-vascular system.
