TEXT: Theory and practical applications of a new Czechoslovak

material is based on a solution of rosin in mothylene chlorid*,
with suitable additives to regulate embrittlement. The procedure
is as follows: 1) Surface of component to be subjected to stress
studies is smoothed and freed of rust and grease by grinding,
applying emergy paper or chemically. Heating with a blow-lamp
removes last traces of degreasing solvent and condensed humidity.
2) Application of stress-coat by spray. Beat results are obtained
with a coat thickness of 0.07-0-09 an. 3) Heating of the coat to
130-1500C by means of a blow-lamp. The following transformation
of the coat takes place during heating: evaporation of solvent and
formation of bubbles, blistering of the surface and formation of

craters. Further heating produces homogeneity of surface and
produces a brittle structure, The Czechoslovak material in not
transformed into the brittle modification by prolonged drying at
room temperature, The coat will retain its elastic properties if
the stipulated heating temperatures are not applied, 4) Gradual
and uniform cooling to 35*C, Internal stresses are produced in the
coat during cooling which make the coat very sensitive towards
straining of the test specimen. 5) The coated test specimen is
quickly placed into testing machine where it is subjected to strain
by loading (bonding test), 6) Internal stresses of the tested
material produce cracks in the coat, the interpretation of which
leads to numerical evaluation of the stresses. The Czechoslovak
preparation was specially applied to the testing of car bodies. and
four photographs are reproduced, showing forms of cracks produced.
An attempt is described to apply the Czechoslovak material to
painted surfaces, without removal of the paint, However, the
solvent contained in the preparation (methylene chloride) exerted a
powerful solvating action on all Czechoslovak pigments and the
method had to be rejected. It in estimated, however, that with
solvent resistant pigments the procedure would operate quite

Furthermore, the Czechoslovak material is non-toxic and shows good
stability to prolonged storage, Disadvantages are the necessitv

ven(mfidi v krevnT plasm*. Determination of plasma copper
CAS.L9K.CES. 1955. 94/38 (1034-1036) Tables 5
A method has been developed to determine Cu in 0.2-0.3 ml. of citrated plasma
after protein precipitation by trichloroacetic acid. The predominating form of Cu
in the blood. bivalent Cu. to bound to plasma proteins in a labile linkage. and
after its transformation to the ionized form a colourdd complex is formed on the
addition of an ethanolic solution of'tetraethylthiuram disulphide. In acid solution
the reaction remains completely stable for several hours. The maximum absorp-
tion is 4150 A. Since the plasma itself in coloured it in necessary to make a
correction by subtracting a plasma blank. In determining Cu by this method. the
utmost care must be devoted to the cleanliness of glass and o"wr Utensils. elm*
the reaction is sensitive to such an extent that the slightest traco of Cu maY dis-
tort the final results. Haemolysed Plasm& cannot be used. Herdmann - Prague

At tile onset of tabour there is a relatively low avernge glycactnia of 80 nig.1 100 mi.
This increases at the end or tile first stage by ;in average of 35 ing. 1100 mi., i.e.
4076. An even more marked increase (50 mg./ IOU nil. or GOT,) is se'ell at tile end of
the second 11 tage. The pyruvic acid level is only slightly increasc6 at the start of
parturition (1.7 mg.1100 nil. ). This shows air increase by 2.4 mg.1101) mi. (100!14,)
at the end of the first stage. This increase reaches its maxitnuin (300%) in the third
stage. The Inorganic phosphorus level allows a falling tendency durir
g labour.
The average value of 3.2 mg./ 100 nil. at the onset of labour is decreased to 2.7
mg./ 100 mi. at the end of the fit-at stage. It is 2.9 mg./ 100 tnl. at the tinte of
birth. The average decrease by 105 can lie regardmi as insignificant. During
labours which last 7 hr. tile glucose level in the umbilical artery did not reach
65 mg./IOO mi.. while that in the umbilical vein varied around 75 mg.,1100 nil. In
the case of parturitions lasting I I - 18 hr. , however, the glycaernin in %he unibilic-
at artery rose by 50%. and that in the umbilical vein by 2G,',.. In the case of quick
tabour, lasting riot more than 7 hr. . the average pyruvic acid level in the urntillic-
at artery is-2.4 mg./ 100 nil., and that in the vein 2.2 nig./ 100 nil. In parturitions
of 11-18 hours' duration the pyruvic acid level rises by almost 100%, both in the
umbilical artery and in the vein. The inorganic hosphorus level in the umbilical
artery tends to fall by 2416, 1. a. front 5.8 nig.TIOO nil. in rapid labours tj -1.4
mg.1100 mi. In labours lasting 18 hr. The average decrease it) the umbilic-I vein
amounts to 8%. from 5 mg./ 100 mi. to 4.6 mg./ 100 nil. Tile decrease in inorganic
phosphorus in the umbilical blood cannot be regarded as decisive.
