PERIODICAL: Vopr. geografii, 1956, sb 39, pp 130-150
ABSTRACT: This new division was accomplished by analyzing the
interaction of all physical and geographical factors.
The historical, or more accurately, the genetic
approaches were used whenever possible. Close at
tention was paid to the relief. The authors have tried
to find the processes or factors which caused the
differentiation among the ripgions. Changes caused by
human activities were studiqd as far as possible. The
authors regard the zones differentiated by the ele-
vation on mountain slopes merely as one provincial

TITLE: The Transformed Map (Proobrazhennaya karta)
PERIODICAL: Nauka i Zhizn', 1957, # 7, p 19-24 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The article deals with research performed by Soviet scientists
in the field of geography of the USSR. Maps prepared 40 years
ago with limited means and primitive equipment were unsa:tis-
factory. So the USSR Academy of Sciences organized expeditions
for systematic geological and geographical exploration. These
expeditions used new research methods, aerial photography, ra-
dioactive elements, and geophysical equipment. The results were
astonishing. Whole mountain ridges were discovered, that were
not marked on the map. Where explorers expected to find plains,
they saw snow-covered mountain peaks. Especially Eastern S1-
biria and Central Asia offered many unexpected surprises, as
parteof that area showed white spots on the old maps. For ex-
ample, the Stalin peak, the highest mountain in the USSR
(7,495 m) was thus discovered in the Pamir range. In the same
area 1,085 glaciers were located, compared to 278 known in 1930.

verna,ya Zemlya, for instance, had not been visited by any ex-
plorsifthefore 1930. A Soviet expedition spent 2 years there
and found 5 large and numerous amall islands and mapped out
37,000 aq km of dry land. In the area of the North Pole no
land was found. The ocean depth there amounted to 4,290 m.
Research work of this kind is continued as many difficult pro-
blems have still to be overcome.

TITLE: Explorations and Discoveries by 8oviet Geographers (Issledo-
vanija i otkrytiya Sovetskikh geografov)
PERIODICAL: Priroda, October 1957, No 10, PP 38-48 (USSR)
AB3TRACT: The article deals with the activities of Soviet geographers
during the Communist regime. As "white spots" could still be
found on geographical maps prepared by Russian scientists be-
fore World War I, the territory of the USSR had to be system-
atically explored and new maps prepared. This was achieved
by dispatching teams of geographers working under the control
of the Academy of Sciences. In the Arctic, e.g., Severnaya
Zemlya, which had been discovered in 1913, only contours show-
ed on the map. A team of experts spent two years there (1930-
1932) and discovered a number of unknown islands novering a
total of 37,000 sq km. In the region of Arctic Ocean, scient-
ists discovered an underwater ridge (named Lomonosov Ridge),
which is 1,800 km long and from 2,500 to 3,000 m high. In
Siberia an entire mountain system was found that did not show
on any map. This "Cherskiy Ridge" covers an area larger than
the Caucasus. And in the Pamir range, members of an expedit-
Card 112 ion discovered the highest mountain in the U3SR, the "Stalin
Explorations and Discoveries by Soviet Geographers 26-10-5/44
Peak" (7,495 m). Since the explorers also gathered details
on the geological structure of the country, their work was
especially valuable for the industrial and economic develop-
ment of the formerly neglected eastern areas of the country.
The article contains 11 photos and one geographical map. The
bibliography lists 4 references all of which are Slavic

ABSTRACT: This is a summary of a report given by the author at a con-
ference of the Moscow Society of Naturalists on 16 April 1956-
After K.I. Argentov and S.S. Shullts, the author in 1957
studied cave phenomena in central and inner Tyan!-ShaO.
His observations proved the tendency of Paleozoic (especially
Lower Carboniferous) limestones of the Tyan'-Shqn~ to form
caves. The morphological formation is determined by the
geological structure - the interstratification of limestone
layers with schist and other layers, ateep slopes, mountnin
elevations and the youth of the relief.
