PERIODICAL: OGncupory, 19,58, Nr 1, PP- 39 - 40 (USSR)

A'013TRACT- In order to increase the flexural tensile strength of fire-clay
plates, they are reinforced with steel wire. In the case of ordi-
nary reinforcement fissures and cracks form in the fire-clay
ducts. This takes place in the result of the difference of expan-
sion of stod wire and fire clay on heating, as the coefficients of
the linear thermal expansionpf these two materials are very dif-
ferent from each other. It is possible to avoid this disadvanta,-:,_,
by re-inforeinf; the plates with short wires (100 - 150 mm) for in
this case the tensions resulting from thermal expansions are uni-
formly distributed on the surface of the plate and the small fin-
sures occurring exert practically no influence upon the strergth
of the plates. The scheme of such a reinforceLrent of plates is re-
presented in the figure. Tests showed that tle optimum diameter
of the steel wire is 3 mm and that such reinforced fire-clay plates
shall be dried and burned in a horizontal position, where piles of

ABSTRACT: The purpose of the investigation was to find a more universal paint for
solar radlation receivers, such an would absorb the Incident radiation In the spectral
ranpe which produces low effective beating and would have a minimum emission in the
I region of the intrinsic thermal radiation of the receiver. Tests made on various
Soviet enamelsfound chat the most satisfactor7 results were obtained with the natural.

TITLE: Temperature dependence of the width of the resonance curve,
and relaxation processes in ferrite single crystals
PERIODICALs' Fizika tverdogo tela, v- 3, no. 1, 1961o 19-31
TEXTt One of the most suited methods for studying relaxation processes
in ferromagnetic materials is based on the analysis of the temperature
dependence of the width (20) of ferromagnetic resonance absorption curves
in ferrite single crystals.% This paper reports on such measurements.
Spherical yttrium-ferrite single crystals with a garnet structure, and
manganese and magnesium-manganese ferrites with a spinel structure served
as specimensl the measurements were made In the range from -1960C to the
Curie point of these ferrites. The growing of the single crystals is
described briefly. A standard method has been used to determine 2AR at
9100 Mo. Altogether 6 specimens have been investigated, and their charac-
teristics are given in a table. Fig. 2 shows 2JR as a function of-.
temperature for these 6 specimenal Fig- 3 shows 111 (T) for specimen no. I

(Alt es denotes the i1qaginary part of the diagonal component of the "external"
susceptibility tensor at the point of ferromagnetic resonance). 2U is
determined in ferrite single crystals by the following processes% Inter-
action of homogenwo precession with spin waves; relaxation processes, in
which magnetic imoUrity ions with a stron6 frequency spirlattice relaxa-
tion take part; excitation of spin waves kwith k-105-10 cm-') as a result
of i3cattering of a #omogenwm precession from microscopic magnetic fluctua-
tions which are cau#ed~by a random distribution of magnetic ions among the
lattice sites; a ioen*ng of the resonance curve, caused by the roughness
of the specimen's surfice; and incoherent relaxation processes due to
thermal fluctuationq of-the magnetic moment. The latter effect entails a
rapid increase of 2&H when approaching the Curie point. When analyzing
the 24H - f(T) curies, it is assumed that n processes that influence 2&H
are additives 26H a ;(26H)n. A detailed discussion is then given of ihe
effect of the roughness of the speoimenj of fluctuations near the Curie
point; of rare-earth Impurities; and of impurities and magnetic disorder
in spinels. The results of the investigation lead to following con-
clusionss 1) The component of 2AH, due to the roughness of the specimen,
Card 2/7

Temperature dependence of the... B102/tM
is approximately proportional to the magnetization; the factor of propor-
tionality is not a function of the ferrite composition. 2) The relpation
frequency of rare-earth impurity ions in Y-ferrite grows from 2-10 1Z to
6'&1013 when heating the specimen from -1960 to +2000C; at room temperature
it has a value of 3-1013- 3) The relaxation mechanism characteristic of
spinel-type ferrites leads to a 2AH component of several oersteds caused by
a spin-wave excitationj therefore it is possible to measure resonance curve
widths of less than 10 oersteds in single crystals of such ferrites. 4)
The 26H component caused_by, thermal fluctuations of magnetization increases
in proportion to (T.- T) 172 when approaching the Curie point. 5) Due to
the fact that the latter component grows with increasing tomperature, while
the components caused by impurity ions and by the roughness of the specimen
decrease, all 2AH - f(T) curves have a minimum above room temperature.
Position and distinctness of this minimum is a function of the values and
temperature dependence of these components. Increasing roughness, e.g.,
brings about a shift of this minimum to higher temperatures. The authors

"The Problem of Artificial Hypothermle In Cardiac Surgox7p" by

Meditsina, Vol 34, No 1Q, Oct 56., PP 3-13
Artificial hypothermia has great surgical significance in making com-
PlICated operations on the heart and major blood vessels possible. It is
based on increased endurance by an organism of trauma and oxygen defici-
ency and decreased metabolism and oxygen requirement. Five typical stages
of artificial hypothermia are described. A study of the changes in the
body temperature, oxygen requirement and pulmonary ventilation during ar-
tificial hypothermia shove that intratracheal ether narcosis does not al-
v%yv ensure either decreased reflex reaction to cold or temporary decreased
oxygen requirement during hypothermia. However the relationship between
oxygen reodresent and the mechanism that supply it is usually favorable.
YC. V. .
The use of neurroplegic agents produces & sure thorough decrease of un-
desirable reflexes, but they exert unfavorable effects on the heart and
hemodynamic system thereby interfering with the oxygen supply.
Metabolic studies of carbohydrates and phosphorus compounds )f the
brain and cardiac muscle of rabbits under hypothermia of 20-- 220C reveiLl
that hypothermia does not cause any essential change8ifithe content of
adenosine triphosphoric acid, phosphocreatine, glycogen, and lactic acid
either in the brain or in the cardiac muscle.
Disturbances in carbohydrate and phosphorus metabolism &rising due
to the isolation of the heart from the general circulation for 10 - 15
minutes under hypothermia were of a reversible nature and less marked than
tbose resulting from isolation of the heart for 3-4 minutes under normal
temperature in rabbits.
The most dangerous complication during hypothermia was the disturbance
of cardiac rhythm and especially ventricular fibrillation. This danger
VG0 commensurate with the depth of hypothermia. One of the most effective
means of preventing arythmis, was proper gas exchange.
The authors conclude that considering the complexity and the lack of
knowledge of the patho~hyniology of artificial bypother-mia,, it should be
used only in certain operations an the heart and major'blool Y"2*1~ and
only under circumstances vbere other simpler and less dangerous anew of
anesthesia mould fail. (U)

PERIODICALt Znaniye - Sila, May 1957, #5, PP 30-33 (USSR).
ABSTRACTt The article describes the experiments made and the possibilities
of applying artificial hypothermis in medicine. It starts
with explaining the effects cold has on animals with an inter-
rupted blood supply to the corebrumg the so called oxygen star-
vation of the cerebrum, and what influence various drugs have
on this process. The article goes on to describe the effects
caused by reducing the temperature of the animals and the fre-
quency of natural hypothermia. A Russian physician S. Lobaqhev,
found that the body temperature of a bear in hibernation wai
reduced to 8-90C. t
The article then deals with the artificial hypothermia on
humans. The first operations, applying hypothermis, were made
a
in France in 1951 and the American surgeon Swenn cooled off
'
human body to below 30 degrees in 1953. In 1954, applying

1949, suggested hypothermia as a subject of study.
