TEXT: The aushors suggest a method for calculating the formation of scale
on metal surfaces to determine the optimum cooling conditions for wire rod
aft.er rolling. The method is based on the idea of scale formation owing
to diffusion. From Fick's law, a differential equation was found to de-
scribe the rules of scale formation as a function of time; dw/dc = D-/w
where D1 = D(C surf /a) is t-he rate constant of scale formation pro-
nortional to the diffusion coefficient (C surf is the oxygen concentration
at t~e oxide-gas boundary; a is the proportionality factor; w is the oxygen
diffused). An analysis of this equation showed that the scale formation
vras proportional to the square root of the time of cooling and heating in
the same ter"Derature range, similar to the case of isothermal oxidation.

After integration, dimensionless deDendences were constructed suitable for
calculating the scale formation during heating and cooling of metal in a
medium of constant temperature. Calculations by this method were conAmed.
by experiments. The effect of the initial temperature and the cooling
rate on the amount of scale was determined, and optimum cooling conditions
viere found, which reduce the waste of metal in scale considerably. There

TEXT: The plant now under construction on the bank of the Kama will be the
greatest enterprise of the Perm' economic region. Its yearly output will be esti-
mated by 1.5 billion rubles. The Plant will have a self-contained technological
cycle beginning with the rolling of Cu and Al wire bars and ending with the
manufacturing of rubbers for insulation and hose sheathings for cables. The Planv/
will produce bare cables, wires and cables with rubber insulation, winding and
glazed wires, as well as power cables for voltages up to 500 kilovolts. All

of shock waven in solids. The experimantal arrangement is shown iu Fig.
2a. The detonation waves which'etter the specimen at a slant cause shock
waves with amplitudes of between 3 and 4 .125 atm. another arrangement
allowed reaching shock waves of 1 - 1.8 -10 atm. The parameters of the

shock waves, are 6iven for aluminum, lead.iron. and copper bodies. Near
the critical angle at which a shock wave can still arise pressure was
found to rise by from 6 to 6 times. 'Uhen the wav on have Crenter anplitudoe,
pressure In the collision region rises up to 4 .106 atm in aluminum. In
steel, copper, and lead It may ovfn ro4oh 7 - 106 atm if tho waven collide
at riGht angles. The results are analyzed by means of the mothod of the
impact polars. It in shown that the picture with only one tangential
discontinuity cannot be employed in describing the Irregular conditions of
the oblique collision of weak shock waves in the metal. Thp authors
present a method of determining pressure and density behind*the reflected
wave front from the parameters of the three-shook configuration. Proesure
and density for the collision of strong shook waves in aluminum were
calculated as examples. Tt was found that the incident and roflectedwaves
