that as the impurity concentration risosq the number of activator trapping centers in-
creases and hence the possibility of creation of electron color centers of nonactiva-
tor origin decreases. The luminescence spectrum of NaF-U is a line spectrum and
covers the 510-650 nn range. The luminoscence Intensity depends strongly on the aoti-

ABSTRACT: This is an elaboration of a preliminary report by the authors (Kristallo-
grafiya v. 9, no. 6, p. 94o, 1964) on the growing of both pure and doped ionic crys-
tals with low dislocation density. The KC1 and NaCl were grown in air by an improved
Kiropoulos method in steps. The procedure consisted of periodically narrowing down
the cross sections, by lifting the growing prystal and then using the narrow portion
of the first step as a primer for the second step. The experiments were performed on
plane-parallel plates cleaved from the grown crystals along the (100) planes. The
dislocations were displayed by selective etching (75% glacial acetic acid and 25% ;j
concentrated nitric acid). The dislocation density was determined with a microscope 1
and the microbardness was determined by an indentation method. Crystal imperfections
1 4 i62t~ 61"

were determined by an x-ray method. A table of the quantitative results is Inesente'll
The decrease in the dislocation density obtained by this method in attributed to the
gradual decrease in the dislocation lines as the cross section of each step is de-
creased. With increasing number of steps., the density of the dislocations, the micro-:
hardness, and the disorientation of the crystal blocks all decrease. The authors

Title : Influence of Resoval of the Cerabral Cortex on the
Bile-Forming Function of the Liver.
Orig Pub : Bul. Experim. Biol. i Mediziny, 1956, 42, No 9, il-14
Abstract : The unilateral removal of cerebral cortex from dogs has
no influence on the intensity of "spontaneous" bile-
formation; however, it intensifies the bile activity
of dry bile, introduced internally, which confirms the
hypothesis of cortical regulation of the unconditioned
reflex functions of the organism.

Title Protedtive Action of Boron on the Flax Plant
Orig Pub Sb. tr, P- zashchte rast. Riga, AN Latv. SGR,
1956, 191-195
Abstract The introduction of boron into the soil protects
the DlantS from bacteriosiS caused by Bac. ma-
ce-vans. Apparently boron considerably reduces
the soil content of Bac. macerans. A similar
decrease of bacteria in the soil is produced
when mineral fertelizers are introduced into the
soil$ and its Moisture content is increased.

Abst : On Latvian soils of soddy gley with a PH 6.6 to 6.9,
vhich mainly contain organic substances of calcium
humus, the action of B on the yield of flax was better,
than on podzol-clayey and clayey and turfy-gleyey soils.
On a clayey soil with a background of NPK the effect of
B manifested no influence on flax yield, and on turfy-
gley soils (back,7ound PK) it yielded only seeds. It
was also shown that with low soil moisture the addition
of B, and also NPK, may hinder the development of the
parasite Bact. macerans. The investigation was

in.the-form of powder mixtures such as those o- r opper or silver-cadmium oxide.
The powders are obtained by simultaneous alkaline deposition of a mixture of hydrox-
idea or the metals from a common aqueous solution of silver snd copper or silver and
cadmium nitrates with subsequent heat treatment Iand elimination of nitrate Joils.
In order to increase the degree of dispersion and homogeneity of the structure and
to improve the technical properties, the deposit obtained is annealed at 700 j-25k
for one hour and then subjected to granulation by introducing A 3-'10% solution Of
polyvinyl alcohol in amounts of up to 10% of the calculated veight~of the mixt~um.
The mixture~is then annealed once more for one hour.

TEXT: Cylincrical phase-epace of a piecewise-linear system is in-
vestigated (frequently met in practice). Thereby, the existence of
a semietable limit cycle is established. Analytical expressions'
are derived for all the bifurcation surfacesp dividing parameter
space into regions of similar strubture. Various electro-mechanical
and mechanical systems involve the equation
31 + a[1 - PFI(x)]t + F(x)
where F is a periodic function. This equation is qualitatively in-
vestigated for arbitrary values of a and Pp and a piecewise-linear
