ABSTRACT: Mud and stone carrying streams constitute a source of acute
danger to all constructions and towns located along such
streams. They usually carry along a sticky, fast moving
mixture of mud and stones, which fills the central part of
the riverbed, 2 to 4 m high and 40 to 50 m wide * This mix-
ture has a slightly convex form and steep (up to 60-70')
sides. Like a ram, it breaks and destroys everything in
its way. The correlation of its components depends on
mineralogical composition of rocks of the region through
which this stream passes. The mud taken from the Durud-
zhi river, which flows from the southern slopes of the main
Caucasus mountain range, had the following composition:
rocks and stones 57-67~o; earth - 23-27% and water - only
10-16%. The author describes in details the hydraulic me-
thod of fighting the mud and stone stream formed by the
Card 112 Durudzhi river. The method was elaborated by the Gruzinskiy

often occured. It consists mainly in liquifying the com-
pact mass of mud and stones by adding water from reservoirs
built for this purpose. When this mass is sufficiently di-
luted stones and rocks sink to the bottom of the river and
the earthy part is carried away by the stream, without
causing any damage. There are 2 diagrams and 1 map.

'the author studies the uniform approximation of function
f (x, y) by means of ihe special solufions (2). Let E be closed
:and bounded A necess ary and sufficient condition is deriv
in order that an arbitrary function which is continuous on
E and satisfies (1) in the interior of E be uniformly. ip-
proximable by solutions (2). This conditiowis automatically
fulfilled if E is a closed simply connected region for wh;cli
!the Dirichlet problem for (1) is stable. It fullows also that
if E is a closed bounded nowhere dense set which does not
1WPaj7Lte the plane, then any f (x, y) which is continuous on
E can be uniformly approximated on E by the functions (2),
