The purpose of the present work was to establish whether there appear any changres in the spermogram of persons with long-term occupntional exposure to ionizin radiations and, if so, to study their character and extent. A total of 1N man ranging in ago from 20 to 43 years were dividid into two groupsi 1) an experimental group of 53 men, who have been working with ionizing rediniion for 8.93 years on the average (nin. 3 years They were subjected to gamras and X-ray irradiation and only rarely to slight bets irradiation. The doses did not exceed the maximum permissible ones; 2) the control group consisted of 51 clinically healthy men, not ox-)osod to ionizing radiation. Results show that 1) a statistically sirnificant reduction in the percentage of mobile spermatozoa has been established in spermograms of persons with long-term exposure to ionizing radiation hazards; 2) after revival tests the total number of nibile spermatozoa in these persons is also reduced .1/2 DvLi Sofia, Doklady Bolgqrskoy AkDdomii Nauk, Vol 10, No 4, 1966, PP 325-328 in comparison with control persons; 3) those changes are particularly pronounced in persons with irradiation depression of hometopoicsis. TITLE: the nature of the K-state in alloys PERIODICAL: Izvestiya vysshikh uchabnykh zavedeniy, Chernaya metallurgiya, no. 12, 1961, 126 - 129 TEXT: Some solid solutions containing metals of the transition group show an anomalous rise in electrical resistance when cooled slowly after annealing. This effect has been attributed to the onset of a structural condition to which Thomas (Ref. 1: Zeitschrift f. Physik., 129, 1951, 219) ascribed the term "K-state". According to one school of thought, the K-state is associated with the formation of atom aggregates (segregations or complexes) in the crystal lattice and this view has been indirectly supported by X-ray diffraction measurements (Ref. 5: I.Ya. Dekhtyar, S.M. Karallnik - DAN SSSR, v.38, no.2. 1953, 227). In the opinion of other workers (e.g. Ref. 6 - R. Nordheim, N. Grant - J. Inst. Metals, -v.82, 1953-54, 44o) the K-state is a result of a disorder-order transformation. These conflicting views promp'--ed the present authors to study the effect Card l/t S/I. If 8/6 1/ Ooo/oi," /oo6'/oo,? On the naLure of E193/E383 of pInstic daformatioii of' proliminarily quonched specimens on tile kinetics and intensity of the formation of the K-state, since plastic deformation, which increases the dislocation density in the alloy, should (if the former of the views quoted above is correct) affect this process. The experimental work was carried out on Nichrome and Supermalloy wire specimens, the composition of these alloys being as follows: C Si Mn Cr Ni Dio Fe S P Nichrome o.o6o% 0.33 0.40 20-91 76-31 2.o6 o.ono.o8 Supermalloy - 0-430% 0-72 - 70,14 4.78 13-35 0.0130-05. The progress of formation of the K-state was traced by electrical- resistance measurements and by dilatometry. To obtain structures stable at low temperatures all the spec imens were vacuum-- annealed at 900 OC for 5 days and quenched. Part of these were plastically deformed at room temperature to 68% reduction, After measuring their electrical resistivity specimens of both series were annealed in vacuum at 475 OC for 43 hours~ This treatment was interrupted after 30, 90, 210, 510, 1110 and 2610 minutes and Card 2*1 R M 01, Oil tho nature of S/148/61/000/012/003/ooc,, E193/E383 the electrical resistance of the specimens at room temperature was measured., The Supermalloy specimens were also quenched from 900 0 , after which some of them were plastically deformed to 17 -095% reduction. All the specimens were then annealed at 475 C for 61 hours, the resistance measurements being talcen after 30, 90, 270, 690, 1820 and 366o ininutes. The dilatonietric heating curves were taken for nichrome specimens (a) quenched 900 OC '6 from , (b) plastically deformed to 670' reduction and (c) annealed for 5 days. The results are repEoduced graphically. In Fig. 2, the electrical resistivity p(.amm /in) is plotted 0 1 0 against duration .minutes) of annealing at 1175 C, Curves 1 and 2 relating to deformed and quenched nichrome specimens, respectively. In Fig. 3, the relative increase in the electrical A R resistance 1000,u) is plottod against annealing time R 0 (minutes) at 475 OC, Curves 1 relating to quenched specimens., Curves 2 - 5 to specimens deformed to 1.2, 2.4, 9 and 175'0, respectively. Finally, the dilatometric curves are reproduced in Card 31t ~ s/148/61/000/012/008/009 On "Aie nature of .... E193/E383 Fig. 4, Curves 1-4 relating to water-quenched, oil-quenclied, deformed to 67% reduction and annealed nichrome specimens, respectively. The results obtained indicate that plastic deformation, particularly when preceded by quenching, clarhedly accelerates the process of formation of the K-state and confirm the view that the formation of the K-state is associated With s'egregation of atoms around dislocations.. The' experiments were carrie& out on AMI- (AMS) AM~ (AMts), Al (DI) and Ai6 016) alloys. Flat test pieces were cleaned with emery paper, washed in kerosene at 40 - 50 OC, dried, degreased with French chilk, rinsed in cold- water.40pickled for 1 min in a 25% solution 6f` sulphuric acid at 70-75 C, rinsed in cold water$ given a bright dip (12-15 see) in a 1:1 solution of nitric Acid and rinsed agaiiiia in cold water. The rate of nj~kk deposition was" 12 - 15 p/h at a charging density of 02 dm /'l. The specimens were held$ after washing and drying, at 200 C for 2,hours to improve the strength of the bond between the aluminium alloy and the ni6kel deposit. The corrosion-resistance of various test pieces, was determined by measuring the loss in weight after a 160-hour test in a y% solution of sodium chloride at room temperature. The minimum weight loss (0.002 - 0-003 g) corresponded to the folloi~ing thickness of the NI depos it's: 15 - 16 it on allby AMg;* 22-23 p f6r alloy AMts; 24-25 p fortalloy Dl; 261t5b ~P for alloy D16. in the second stage .of the investigation the dorrosion-resistanc!e of the soldered ,.Joints was determined.
