PERIODICALt Radio, 1960t No.7, PP-55--56
TXXT3 The power pack has the following parameterss output
voltage can be %raried between 330 and 550 Vv maximum load
current
is O-3A at 550 V, output resistance is less than I nI_, and
output hum at the maximum current is less than 20 mV at 400
V.
A detailed circuit diagram of the device is shown In Fig.l.
The
rectifier is based on a bridge circuit consisting of
germanium
diodes. In order to equalize the inverse voltages, each
diode is
shunted with a resistance. The rectifier is followed by a
time
switch which is in the form of a Schmitt trigger circuit
provided
with an integrating network. The left--hand side anode of the
Schmitt trigger tube contains' the coil of a polarized relay.
The integrating circuit R17CI has the time constant of
230 seconds. The circuit is actuated when the grid of the
left-
hand side triode of the tube reaches a potential of 250 V;
this
takes 60 seconds. The relay contacts connect the stabilizer
circuit to the rectifier. The smoothing filter is of the

of 40 ILF condensers connected in series. The voltage
stabilizer
is output-voltage controlled and employs a high-gain 2-stage
amplifier. The reference-voltage source is provided by a
stabilivolt tube giving a voltage of 105 V- The stabilization
coefficient of the system is 500. The magnitude of the output
voltage is controlled by the potentiometer R34- The physical
layout of the stabilizer is illustrated in Fig.2 and 3 and a
photograph of its front panel is shown on P.55. There are

ABSTRACT: A controlled high-voltage source based on a standard
VS-22 rectifier is de-
scribed. The unit: may be used for automatically switching high
voltages from -4 to +1
kv in steps of 20, 40, 100 or 200-v. The modifications made in the
VS-22 unit are de-
scribed. A block diagram of the rectifier is shown in the figure.
A pulse from an ex-
ternal controlling device (a. g. a* timer) moves step switch 4 by
one position. This
corresponds -to a change in the output voltage by the selected
step. The next pulse
switches the voltage through stil*1 another step etc. A complete
revolution of the
step switch closes contacts which feed the control circuit 6 of
the motor 5. Starting
of the motor switches high-voltage divider 3 through one position.

TEXT: Thermal motion of molecules in n-dichlorobenzene
(a non-polar liquid) near its crystallization point (it melts at
52.9 OC) was investigated using Raman line widths. From the width
of the 4358 1 line the relaxation time r(the lifetime of a
molecule in &given state) was determined by a method suggested by
Vuks (Ref 3). A diffraction spectrometera~C-4~ (DFS.-I+) with a
1200 lines/mm grating, was employed. k mercury lamp(IPK -2
(PRK-2) was used as the light source Fig 1 shows that log 'r
rose linearly with l/T between 90 ana 65 OC,, Between 65 and 60

a relaxation-time minimum was observed, showing that changes
occurred in the liquid. Fig 2 shows the dependence of the
relative Raman intensity on temperature. A. maximum in Fig 2 was

properties of substance. Such changes
(prectrystalliz-ation
ordering) began at 70 OC in n-dichlorobenzene and were
completed
at 63-6r+ OC. The Raman intensity maximum indicated a
maximum- of
the non-uniformity in n-dichlorobenzene, while the
relaxation
time minimum denoted completion of preerystallization
changes.
Measurements of the refractive index (Fig 3) showed that
the
extrema in the Raman intensity curves were not due to
variations
of the refractive index. Acknowledgement is made to

AUTHOR: Gorbatov, N., Engineer Doctor
TITLEs calculating the Dimensions of Thick-walled Tubes
Under Stress at High Temperatures
PERIODICAL: StroJfrenstv:L", 1961, Vol. 11, No. 1,
pp. 4-12
TEXT: The author discusses the theoretical and practical
bases for the determination of the wall thickness of tubes
with a diameter ratio r2/rl _*%~ 1.3 under creep conditions
and gives a detailed numerical example. In most engineering
materials creep will be more pronounced at temperatures above
400 OC. The author considers only creep during the second
phase of,the idealised creep curve, i.e. the phase in which
creep is at a constant rate and can be expressed by the
empirical equation:
dep kc~' (1.2)
dt P

where k and n are empirically determined material

this equation will be:
(t) n
Ip = BI M (2.2)
where B I(t) is a function of time. This equation is
applied for creep at a constant stress. Graphs are
included
which were originally published by S.D. Ponomarev (Ref. 1:
Strength Calculations in Engineering, Mashgiz, Moscow,
1958).
For evaiuating the stresses the author commences with the
Mohr
circle and gives the basic formula originally derived by
L.M. Xachanov (Ref. 9) for calculating the rate of creep
in
three dimensions. Up to the limit of elastic deformation,
the
stress distribution is given by the theory of elasticity
and is
independent of time. As flow commences, both deformation
and

stress distribution become a function of time. After a
prolonged period of flow, stresses approach a limit value
and the rate of creep becomes constant. The calculations
in the present article refer to thiA steadystate.
Following that, the author discusses the factors which
influence the choice of materials, such as the temperature
distribution, local stresses, required lifetime,
permissible
deformation at the and of lifetime, the tension in
threaded
joints to ensure tightness, their relation to the
mechanical
and physical properties of materials and mentions
corrosion.
The criteria of strength were deduced from experimental
data
obtained with loads applied in the axial direction only,
as
data with combined loading are yet lacking interpretation.
For the elastic state the author applies either the
formula
of Huber-Mises-Henky for the reduced stress:

Under steady-state creep in the plastic state the reduced
stress should be calculated separately for the creep Imit
and for the long-run strength for the selected number of
oporating hours. For tubes both values of the reduced
stresses can be approximately expressed by the above given
formula of Guest:

Following that, the stresses in the tangential, radial and
axial directions are evaluated for a thick-walled
(r2/rl,'> 1.3) and elosed cylinder under internal and
external pressure. The author arrives at formulae which
are stated to be similar to those embodied in the Czech
Standard Specification IESN 13 1010, worke, out by bTD,
the Soviet specificationMoKTI, the American Piping Code,
ASHE specification, etc, Thuaq for calculating the stresses

the Equations (5.24) and (5.25) can be used which, in the
case of p. = 0 and p, = p , can be written in the simplified
form of Eqs. (5.27) and (5.28). In these equations;
