ABSTRAM The authors of the paper under review have singled out the
Kola Peninsula as a special geochemical province, rxiinly
because of the cesium-lithium deposits found tliere, Previous-
ly the Kola Peninsula had been considered to be a part of the
Fennoscandic provincel this assumption was based on the re-
search work done by Fersman. The rare elements, in w1dely
scattered depooits, are genetically connected with nary pea-
matite fields, which are of practical value, particularlLt
lithium pegmatites and the numerous accompanyinC as.9ociations
of rare metals. The characteristic feature of the new nro-,
vince is the existence of an alkaline granitic and of a
Card 1/4 nephe line -ayeni te mineral complex, furthermore the occurrence

of granitoid r3aamata of the palingenous-metanarxi tic petro-
geiieoiu, and it further development of 61-1111itization and
alkaline LietasomutosiL. For a long time it was not possible
to discover any very impirtant and characteristic mineral
aonociations or elements, as, for instance, Li, Ce, B11, be,
Ta arid Ili, except where they were combined with Paleozoic
subvoleanoes Khibiryid Luyavrurt. Fcmman's prognosis that
accumulations of Li and Go could be expected only in combi-
nation with colder pegmatite geophasea, the occurrence of
which in crystalline shields was lose probable, soon was con-
firmed by the authors of the present paper. Fersma.n based
himself on analogous cases in Sweden and Canada (Manitoba).
Altogether, a whole layer, an uninterrupted peg-matite field
was discovered, bearing the name Vorort3a-Poros-Ozero. As a
rule, the pegmatite field is situated within a deeply meta-
morphooed mass of volcanogenous arid satmontary origin, and
in partly amphibolic and albitic gabbro-labradorites. The
entire pegmatite mass is dislocated in a complicated way,
and steeply shifted in the direction of the centrally axis
structure of the Kola Peninsula. A repeated metamorphism,
as well. as intense contactinetasomatic processes connected
Card 2/4 with granitoid intrusions arid polmiatites, and a'19o phenomena

of magnetic replacement, have almost completely destroyed
the original structures of the ore-bearing minerals. In-
vestigations of the new lithium deposits on the Kola Pen-
insula show that, as compared to well known similar depo-
sits in the USSR and abroad, it represents, viewed from
the standpoint of the conditions of its geological position
and with respect to some mineralogical and geological pe-
culiarities, a type of the complex rare-metal pegmatite
field of r%ional importance. In the Feraman's classification
it corresponds to a rare-metal province, particularl.,f of
lithium. There are 5 Soviet references.

TITLE: On the Absorption of Phosphorus by Iron and Aluminum Hydrates

ABSTRACT: Extracts with weak acids are widely used for the determination
of mobile soil phosphates. During the preparation of the ex-
traot, a secondary absorption of the phosphates by the solid
phase of the soil takes place. To prevent thik, various inves-
tigators suggested a number of substances (Refs 1,3-9). In the
present paper, the author studied the ability of several rea-
gents of preventing the absorption mentioned in the title. The
experimental results with R(010 3 are given in table 1, those
for soils in table 2. On the basis of these results, the author
makes the following conclusions: 1. The solution of ammonium
molybdate can be used prophylaetJoally tD prevent a ae~-.ond,try
phosphorus absorption durine the preparation of acidic 3oll ex-
Card 113 tracts. 2. In the tests, the phosphate ions were actively dis-

placed by fluorine ions when the former had been absorbed by
Al(OE) 3* The fluorine ions wdre not able to do this in case of
phosphate ions absorbed by Fe(OH) 3. This ability of tlx '--ions
can be used for separating the participation of Al(OH)" Ind of
Fe(OH), in the phosphorus sorption by the soils. 3. In tLe
tests with sod bleaching earth and with red earth, 40-4,%-~ of
the absorbed phosphorus were able of being exchanf-ed a&0nst
?-ions. It can be assumed that in the mentioned soils about
40'/6 of the phosphorus are absorbed by compounds of the AI(OH
type- 4. In the tests of the author it was not possible to sep-
arate the parts played by the iron and aluminum in the absorp-
tion process of phosphorus by the soils by means of K 4[Fe( CN)J_
and Aluminon solutions. There are 4 tables and 9 references, 2
of which are Soviet.

An outbreak of leptospirosis occurred in some
waterfront rayons of Krasnodar Kray after a down-
pour toward the end of the su- r of 1951. The
etiology of the disease was confirmed by serolo-
x4eal examinations. The greatest number of cases

The. percentage of boys affected was higher than
tbat, of girls. In a number of cases it was not
Wficult to diagnose the disease. In some cases
thi infection took the form of constipation or
diarrhea. In 31% of the cases various symptoms of
Impairment of the nervous system were noted. These
consisted of excitement, worry, 7,ccr~-Aonal ILlirium,
and C)rtell symptoms.
