The author points out that because of the comr, lexity of the automation system and beenuse of the low expense Card 1/3 for nonautomatic high-voltage water-3rain&F.,e 15-57-1 13-14 &F _5 hitornation of Heavy-Duty %ne-Draining, Equipment (Cont.) operations, this automation 1.13 oxpodient only whet, tile Painning can be done under optimum conditions. Calculations prove that, of tile methods of controlling the pumping operation--by using a pressure relay and by ivater discharge from the pipe--the second is better. The Donets Industrial Institute and the "Krasnyy Metallist" Factory developed a special relay which allows an accuracy in operation of f5 percent. The author reports on the Investigation of processes of starting and stopping the pumps. He indicates the necessity of automatic opening of the valve before starting the pump (to avoid air pockets) and the slow automatic closinE of the valve before the pump stops (to avoid water hammer effect) und for safety during any rare stoppages of the mine pumps with the valve open (stopp&Ees due, perhaps, to cut-off of the electrical power source). For prevention of water hammer counteracting devices are recommended: a spring- loaded safety valve, made by the Donets Coul 'Mining Institute, and contrciled damper for the water hammer, acting at the instant the pressure decreases. The problems of selecting methods of submerging the pumps are examined. It is contended that the use of booster Card 2/3 15-57-10-14965 Automation of Heavy-Duty IMine-Draining Fquipment (Cont.) purn.ps and the location Of Pumps below water level in -vater-collecting headers considerably simplify the BVSteM Of EUtOMUtlon. The author proposes a variant system, AVV-3 (b) for automation oi, the principal water-draining apparatus with booster pumps and pltxing of a vertical pump in the princinal int&ke. The system provides for the use of a consumption relay, a pneumatic-electrical level relay, a pressure relay for controlling the pump valve, a thermo-relay o.'L' type TR-2',-)O for contrallini,, tne temperature of the safety valves, End an emerrency-level relay for switching on the emergency pumps. The system may be used with apparatus employinF control valves and with- out them. The author discusses the problem of' mass introduction of automation for water-draining apparatus. Cerd 3/3 V. K. LU-3-U TOPIC TAGS: hypoxia, electroancophalography, contral, nervous sritom AWMCTt The sequence, functional significance, and physiological mechanisms of phase changes in the EEG' s of various parts of the brain during hypoxic hypoxia were studied in rabbits with electrodes implanted in the sensori- motor region of the cortex, the hippocampus, the posterior hypothalamus, 1 !and the midbrain reticular formation. The rcbbits breathed nitrogen through a mask. Functional state of these centers was evaluated by assimilation of rhythmic light flashes on the EEG. ln6animalspO 2 in the cortex and reticular -formation was polarographically recorded. As hypoxic hypoxia developed, -4CC NRI AT6036526 the well-known 3 characteristic phases of BEG chan.ges appeared: 1) the arousal reaction phase; 2) the dominant slow wave phase; and 3) the phase of electrical activity extinction. It was found, however, that the phase 2 slow waves alternated with periods of rapid oscillations, and that recurrent islow waves could be observed in the activity extinction phase in addition to periods of bioelectric "silence". During the first (amplitude gain) stage ,of the slow wave phase EEG' s of all studied brain structures showed assi- milation of light flash rhythms. Simultaneous decrease in P02 shows this to be a per sistence reaction masking the development of CNS inhibition. Rea- toration of the light flash rhythm assimilation following hypoxic hypoxia usually occurred first in the cerebral cortex. Changes in cerebral cortex and reticular formation EEG' s during hy- poxic hypoxia were correlated and analyzed by computer, and the results compared with changes in pO in the cortex (59. 25 :t 10. 25 frbm initial levels) and reticular formation (79, A ;t 3. 33% from initial. levels).
