Title : Research on the Afforestation of the Inchukalne Heath with Birch Trees, Orig Pub : Tr. Latv. a.-kh. akad., 1957, No 6, 4og.4ig. Abstract since 1930 experiments have been carticd on with the aim of afforesting the barren heath (1500 hectares in area) between VanEpzh and UncliukalnE; stations (Ri6n-Pskov rail- road) which developed because of nimerous fires. The success of those crops is hindered by the soil's ariaity and lack of fertility, the presence of an ortstain (iron pan) horizon, and several biotic fautors. The additions of these elements have a positive effect on steel but, beginning from certain temperatures, a non-uniform oxidation is observed in steels containing Al and Si and oxide "growthsff are formed. The temperatures at which the growths do not yet form, and oxidation takes a slow and uniform course, are a little higher for steels containing Si or Al than for Cr-steels without these hdditions. TEXT: The influence of additions of Al and Si on heat resistance of chromium steels lKhl3 and Khl7 was investigated. Heat resistance was determined by weight losses 'of specimens submitted to the action of air at an elevated 'temperature for laO hours. Descaling was done by pickling in a melt of NaOH and 'NaN03 (8o:20) at 400 *C for 1-2 minutes with subsequent treatment in a 20/^0" sulphuric acid solution containing a corrosion inhibitor, at 60 *C for about 5 minutes. It was established that both aluminium and silicon have a beneficial influence on Card 1/2 Influence of alloying additions S/081/62/000/011/026/057 E071/E192 heat resistance of chromium steels and thus can, to some extent, replace part of the chromium in these steels. The oxidation of s"Pels as a rule is uniform, however, beginning from a to,mperature,characteris-tic for each steel and depending on the amount of alu-minium and silicon added; a non-uniform. oxidation with the formation of surface growths takes place. rAbs-tractor's note: Complete translation Card 2/2 S/137/6;R/000/010/017/028 A052/AI01 AUTHOR: Gasior, E. 3 TITU--,: Investigations into the method of determining the heat-resistance of steel ?,7.1 !ODICA~Lj: Referativnyy zhurnal, Metallurgiya, no. 1.0, 1962, 107, abstract 101719 ("Prace Inst. hutn-.", v. 13,.no. 4, 1961, 205 - 210, Polish; sur,ir,laries in Russian and English) V-7T: Methods of investigating the heat-resistance of materials based on th& data of determinia3 the rate of evaporation and oxidation of samples at a high temperature are analyzed. The importance is pointed out of qualitative methods, describing 'he state o *f the surface, the non-uniformity of evaporation 0~ and o..:idation of samples, and of quantitative n'ethods, determining the loss .. mass of the samples and the amount of.scale, forming during oxidation, and gases. The results are reported of investigations of IX13 steel by the inflection of the curve representing the rate of evaporation as a function of, the holding time at different temperatures within 800 - 1,5000C range ("thermal scales" method), Card 1/2 S/137/6P-/000/010/017/028 Investigations into the method of... The investiga- tion by the first method was carried out on round samples with the lateral sur- i'ace of 14 cm2, and by the second method on flat samples with the area of 32 cn,2. The results obtained enabled one to determine the kinetic parameter KP (eqiii- librium constant) of the oxiclation process. Curves of the increase ol mass of the samples at oxidation in the air and of log Kp plotted against temperature are presented. it is found that IX13 steel can be used as a heat-resisting one up to 7500C. Khimiya, no. 2, 1963, 409, abstract 2N65 (Pol. patent 45652, April 17, 1962) TEXT; 1500 parts of 4.6~b' solution of CH3ONa and 350.2 parts of dry Na-salt of 1-chlor-2-nitro-4-benzenesulfo-acid are boiled and stirred for 20 hours. The Na-salt of 2 -nitro -1 -methoxy -4-benzenes ulf o -acid (acid I) thus formed is filtered, dried, added to 850 parts of C13020H at 25 - 300c, mixed for 20 hours, poured out onto ice, and acid chloride I is filtered off. The latter, while not dried, is condensed with 64 parts of (C 2H 5)2NH at J200C. The mixture is acidified with HCI, the diethylamide I is filtered off and 500 parts of nj22% solution of NaSH with pH
