(Table) that fracturing is moot effective when the volume of flushing fluid ex-
ceeds the casing volume 3-4 times, that 10 cu m of water per ninning meter of
stratum is the optimum volume of flushing fluid, and that 1-5 tons of sand per
running meter and large volumes of flushing water produce the most favorable re-

ABSTRACT: The scatterers had a size of 65.65 cm2 and were located at
a distance of 60 cm from the source (39 cm from the end 2of
the collimeter). tTeutron flux density V (@ (?) LMeV/Cm .see]
was measured by means of a detector which was movably
fastened to a hemisphere having a radius of 15 am. The center
of the hemisphere and the centei@ at which the collimated
SX -ray impinges upon*the scatterers are identical.
The diameter of the r-ray impinging upon the scatterer was
measured bv means of the X-ray film " MI.:% ,.pn X. 5 ". In the
normal case it amounted to 4.50 + 0.05(emb. In the case of a
ray impinging obliquely, however, it was 2.38 + 0.07 cm
/-ratitude angle cf . 45 and 600). The strength @_f the

A special counting tube (Ref 1) was used as a detector of
scattered r-rays; this counter possesses the same degree
of sensitivity with respect to different energies. The
absolute albedo energy was measured with an accuracy of + 15
The spectral splitting-up of the scattered Ir-quanta was
determined by absorption in lead. The following measuring

ABSTRACT As early as 1845, Falconer and Kautley described the species of the (ele-
phas planifrons) Protelephas gon.nov./abbraviation in the Russian text/,
found in Northern India. The great resemblance of the 'southern' elephant
(flatheaded) and particularly the similarity of the rear molar teeth led
to the conclusion that the Elephas mirionalis Nesti has to be considered
as descendant of the flatheadad original elephant. After deteailed investi-
gations scientists now are of the opinion that it is impossible that the
Protolephas belongs to the group of the Archisiskodon. In addition to dif-
ferent structures of the skull, there exist particularly marked differences
as far as the teeth are concerned. Judging from the teeth, the Protelephas-
the oldest original elephant so far discovered- must have been an :Lnhabi-
tant of the warm and moist wooden areas of South-Eastern Asia(during the
Biocene). Therefore the assumption that the Archidiskodon could be the 'an-
cestor' of theflat-akulled Protelephas is hardly justified. As a matter.of
fact, the former is a representative of a species that has nothing to do
with the differentspecies of the Elephas. The geological aget Upper (Youn-
ger) Pliocene. (Northern India, Burma (Iravadi)).

Sixteen white rats were subjected to single total irradiation bY 700 r,
producing radiation sickness. Morphological changes of the nervous appara-
tus of the skin occurring under the influence of ionizing radiation in-
cluded changes of nerve elements in the papillary layer of the skin, changes
of the nerve apparatus of hair follicles, changes of tectile apparatus, and
destruction of nerve structure in the deep layers of the skin, These changes
are apparent as early as the second and third days, but become more pronounced
7-11 days after irradiation,
Morphological changes in the receptor apparatus proved by a number of
clinical tests verify disruption of the function of skin analysors. Changes
of nerve elements of the skin occur earlier than other processes in the sur-
rounding tissues. Changes occurring in the hair itself depend on disturb-
ances in the neurotrophicity of the skin.

Abstract: [Authors' English summary] Authors made a com-
parative study of the effectiveness of various methods of
sterilizing rubber tubes for intratracheal narcosis. They
found sterilization with rivanol most effective. Traces
of mercurial compounds may be harmful to the patients,
'whereas other chemicals affected the rubber of the tubing.
In all cases, the tubes should be thoroughly washed with
soap and water before sterilization, and washed with
boiling water afterwards. There are two (2) references,
one in English and one in German.

Resistance

ABSTRACT- A number of papers published in the last few years
deal with problems of multielectrode devices with nega-
tive resistance, based on an avalanche-type multiplication
of charge carriers In a p-n Junction, to w1ilch a reverse
voltage is applied. Since these devices are very
valuable in oscillatory, amplifying, changeover, and
Computer circuits, it 41.s of interest to investigate
oimole two-terminal devices having a sect'lon of negative
re3istance in their volt-ampere characteristics. The
simplest method of copstructing such a device Is
proposed by A. Reaves, R. W. Cooke (L'onde ElectriqUe,
Card 1/10 1954, 722, 1), describing a point contact germanlUnl
