Experience with intramedullary pinning of 62 different fractures is given. The
authors prefer the open to the closed method. It gives the best results in trans-
verse fractures in the medial part of the femur and humerus and is suitable even
in the case of open wounds. The pins should be strong and long enough as im-
mobilization must, be complete. In oblique and spiral fractures and in the case of

Abstract /Authors' English summary modifieL7: Diagnosis of acute
gasturoduo-denal ulcer bleeding and diagno3tic problems of eso-
phageal varix bleeding are discussed. Acute blecding during cor-
ticosteroid treatmont and the difficulty of dia-nosis of this bleed-
ing are discussed. Hemorrhagic gastritis, like acute ulcers with
profuse ble.-iding, usually rosults in an operation withour, a prelim-
inary diagnosis of tiic actual condition of the patient. X-ray ex-
amination during bleeding is beneficial to the patient. 1 Table,

Title Statistical Method of Determining the Mass and Lifetime of
Neutron Unstable Particles
Original
Periodical Studit al cercetarii fiz., 1955, 6, No 3, 473-480 (resumes
in Russian and English)
Abstract Masses of VO particles and products of their decomposition (asmum-
ing a decomposition into 2 particles) can be statistically det*rmined
by analyzing the distribution of the Manchester-Aarameter of and the
value of the mean squared transverse momentum 4' of the momentum of
the secondary particles. The position of the maximum of magnitude
0t __0(01 on the histogram givbs'an auxiliary parameter Oc'
which can give the unknown masses. owing to the rel ivisti length-
ening of the time scales, the form of the histogram :10(-- I> 0C,
can be used to estPate the order of magnitude of th duration of the
lifetime of the V particle.

Title Analysis of Certain Cases of Anomalous Decay of 00 Particles
Orig Pub D&l, AN SSSR, 1956, lo6, No 6, qB9-m
Abstract An "anomalous" 00 decay was observed with a value of Q considerably less
than 22,0 Mev. In this case the masses of the secondary particles were
271:t 79 me (a6 -star is produced) and 260,t-41 me (leaves the emulsion).
Assuming that these are ir-mesons, we get Q - 23'tl8 Mev, and the mass
of t8a 00 is 595 :t 36 me. The results of the statistical analysis of
64 & decays, observed by various authors, are given. Two pharp maxima
are observed on the probability curve, corresponding t6 60 particle masses
of.593 t 10 and 973 t* 25 me, which is in good agreement with the directly
observed values. The author proposes that the lifetime of a 00 particle with
mass of approximately 595 me is substantially greater than the lifetime of
a 0 0 particle with a max 973 me.

calculates the contrvl collision of two different pnrticloo

fact thnt the iness is differently distributed in the per-

there exists a symmetry in the energy nnd rngulcr distri-

Abstract A meson shower of the type 4 -4 17 \, prod-.~ced in emul-
sion, exposed at high altit.,Ae, was investigated from the
point of view of the ang.7lar and ener8y distrib, itions.
The energy of the primary particles, estimated by various
methods, is found to be close to 4 x loll ev. In the cen-
ter of mass system, the angc-lar distribution does not dis-
play a strong anisotropy, and has only a small asymmetry
with a certain excess of particles emitted backward.

PERIODICAL: Zhurnal eksperimentallnoy i teoreticheskoy fiziki, 1958,

ABSTRACT: It has recently been established by a number of experiments
that in nuclear collisions with high energies the
particles flying away include such as carry away most of
the energy. In their introduction the authors discuss
several papers (Shayn (Schein-)-and HBD4starB (Refs 1 and 2)),
nuclear-active components of cosmic radiation in the air
(Refs 3,4), the structure of atmospheric showers (Refs 5,6),
the theory by Landau (Ref 8), Heisenberg (Geyzenberg)
(Ref 7), Belentkiy (Ref 9) etc. The present paper aims
at investigating the influence exercised by various
factors upon the eourse of the transition curve for
electron-nuclear showers in a dense absorbing medium.
Card 1/3 It is assumed that also for medium energies there exist

so-called "energetically preferred particles" in
every stage of the nuclear cascade process. For the
purpose of determining the portion of the decaying
particles in the generating component and the existence
of unstable particles among those which are "energeti-
cally preferred" a comparison is drawn with absorption
in air. Among the unstable energetically preferred
particles there may be n;L -, KV_ , Ke- mesons but not
E)_ or-t-mesons. However, in reference 26 mention is
made of electro-nuclear showers, in which both the
inciding as well as the emitted energetically-preferred
particles occur in form oft-mesons. In conclusion,
the authors thank D.V.Skobelltsyn, Academician, and
the collaborators of the Laboratoriya kosmicheskikh
luchey FIAN SSSR (Laboratory of Cosmic Radiation of
the Physics Institute,AS USSR) for their critical dis-
cussion of this work and for their valuable comments.

TEXT: The author describes a statistical method for the evaluation of
data on the azimuthal distribution of particles in a weak meson shower.
Showers produced by means of 9-Bey protons from the proton-synchrotron
of the Ob"yedinennyy institut yadernykh issledovaniy (Joint Institute of
Nuclear Research) in #4WKfW-P (NIKPI-R) emulsions are compared with
cosmic ray showers. To determine the azimuthal effects, the shower
diagrams are so rotated that the mean values ~ of the azimuthal angles
coincide. In each shower and with the help of the equation

of light elements (C, N, 0) forming >.,3 shower particles. In all, 721 such Intm-

contradicts the model of multiple meson formation in the nucleus in consecutive

SOURCE: Electrotehnica, no. 1, 1965, 23-27
TOPIC TAGS: ferrite, die
ABSTRACT: The authors review the principles of hot die casting and report on the
application of this method to the production of ferrite parts on an experimental
basis. Both the equipment used and the parts produced are described, and the
results of some tests on the finished products are presented. Orig. art. has;

A report is presented of a case of acquired haemolytic anaemia in lupus erytherna-
tosus, In which a specific anti-E auto-antibody could transiently be demonstrated.
This antibody disappeared after treatment with prednisone. At the same time
another antibody was found which reacted only with erythrocytes which had been
pretreated with trypsin. This antibody. which showed no particular group specifi-
city. was permanently present. regardless of the hormone treatment administered.

of a Vaccine Prepared with Modified Live Virus."
Bucharost, Studii si Cercetari. de Inframicrobiolomi Vol 17,
No 5p 66t pp 377-387.
Abstract: An anti-measle8 vaccine prepared with modified live
IM60-5Huang virus was tested on 220 children. Only minor clinical
reactions resulted, with a complete absence of rashes or con-
vulsions. One month after vaccination serum conversion was 79,41
percent, and the titer of anti-measles hemagglutination-inhibiting
antibodies varied between 1/80 and 1/320. After 4 months the
corresponding values were 75 percent and 1/40 to 1/80. Thus the
vaccination seems to confer a specific immunity, which so far has
protected the vaccinated children against measles..
