The beloAmentioned data illustrate the development of higher educat-- ion du'ring the first 5-year plani (1951-1955). Towards the end of the'-1955/56 scholastic year 62,000 students were trained at 47 highdr educational institutions (against 27,000 in 1950), in addition to 15,000 who were instructed by correspondence schools. At the end of 1955/56 more -than 1.1,000 students were trained b~ the laborer-peasant faculties which prepare.then for entry-into higher schools. During the first 5-Year plan, 25,900 Specialists graduated from the higher educational institutions- For this period the Government of the GMr-spent more than half a.milliard (500 million) Marks on scholarships. During 1956 about 90 % of. the students were granted-acholarships for a total amount of - 160-3 million Marks as against 10 million Marks expended by the Card 1/3 German Federal Republi .a. The yearly budget.of the 6 universities 3-4-23/28 The Problems of Forming Cadres of"Feople's EntelIlgentsia" in the Higher Schools of the GDR and the Higher Technical School in Dresden alone, which amounted to 215 million Marks in 1951, has been more than doubled for 1955. In the course of the 5-year plan, 26 new institutes were opened. This and other data of the extensive article are taken from the GDR Journal "Das Hochechulwesen". It states that about 10,000 young-specialists start th6lr professorial ca3feer yearly and in the course of several years-all have studied the theory of Marxism- Leninism. The article deals, further, with the teaching of so-, cial science, the improving of the instruction at the law faculty and the lecturing of political economy at non-economical educat- ional institutions. It mentions the use of translated Soviet textbooks and refers to # 7 of this Journal whereini,Franz Dahlem deals with the mutual relations between the higher educational institutions, the ministries andtthe national enterprises. Re%w ference is also made to an article of Dr. Friedrich Donat of the University at Leipzig dealing with the method of instruction at- the higher educational institutions. Further, the article con- tains particulars in regard to the Greifewald University and the Card 2/3 cultural co-operation between the German Democratic Republic and 3-4-23128 * Tho Problems of Forming Cadres of "People's lnt6lLigentaid" in the Higher Schools , of the GDR the Soviet Union. TITLE: The Efficacy of Active Combined Immunization Against Staphylococoal, Lifection and Tetanus. PERIODICAL: Zhurnal mikrobiologii, epidemiologii i lmmunobiologii, 1960, Nr 4, pp 27 - 31 (USSR) ABSTRACT- The author studied the immunological.efficaoy of combined immunization with purified sorbed stapylococcus and tetanus taxoids, administered Jointly. The tetanus toxoid used was batch No. 88 toxoid refined and concentrated by the method developed by Blagoveshchenskiy at the Institut epidemiologil i mikrobiologii imeni Gamalei AMN SSSR (Insti- tute of Epidemiology and Microbiology imeni Gamaleya of the ALMN, USSR). This consisted in sedimentation at the isoelectric point In hydro- chloric. acid, followed by sorption on AL (0H)3 and elution. The toxoid then-contained 1750-BU/ml and 6.7 mg/ml of A1203. The stapby- l6coccus toxoid was also purified by sedimentation in hydrochloric acid and, after sorption on Al (OH)3, contained 148 Bu/ml and 3.35 mg/ml of A1203. in the combined vaccine the dcses of tetanus toxoid were 100 Card 113 200, 400 and 1000 BU and-the doses of staphylococcus toxoid.- 25 or 80V/16-60-4-6/47 'The Efricaqy of Active Combined Immunization Against Staphylococcal Infection ani Tetanus 50 BU, per injection. The staphyloccus toxoid had high antigenic and imt-i-iunogenic properties, properties which 'it retained completely when combined with the tetanus toxoid. Injected in a dose of 25 or 50 BU, the staphylococcus toxoid had no inhibiting effect on the immuno- genicity of the tetanus toxoid, Immunization with the staphyloccus toxoid gave complete protection against inflammation caused by Staphylococei. The two components of the combined preparations were not mutually exclusive. Rabbite'immunized with the preparation deve- loped profound resistance to spores, of Clostridium andto strains of staphylococcus. Since wounds are most often infected with staphvio- cocous, we would be quite justified in including staphylococcus tox0id in combined preparations, particularly those against wound Infection. There are 2 tables and 19 references, 7 of which are Soviet, 8 English Card 2/3 and 4 French. TITLE: Working of I'lagnesite-Chromite and Chamotte Masses in Centrifugal Edge Mills "Model 115" (Pererabotka magne--itokhromitovykh i shamotnykh mass na tsentrobezhnykh begunakh 1114odell 115") PERIODICAL: Ogneupory, 19581 f lir 6, pp. 25o - 257 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The centrifugal edge mills "model 115" wero developed by the Central Institute for Foumdry-Machine Building. In the Zapo- rozhly~e worl:s they are -used for the working of the masses of refract:)ry magnesite-chromite products as well as for chamotte masses. In figW~e 1 the construction of an edge mill for the production of refractory products is shown without any changes and then is described. The water is added automatically from the mains (see figure 2). The device for the supply of slip is shown in fij!-,are 3 and the total view of the edge mill "model 115" is shown in figu re 4. 1) Production of chromium magnesite products. In the Zaporozhlye Card 1/3 works the edge mills are mounted under the devices for dosaging Working of Magnesite-Uhromite and Chamotte Masses 131-58-6-3114 in Centrifuj;al Edge Mills Vodel 115" the weight.,The charge is 6oo kg. In order to find -out the optimum working regime the influence of the duration of working on the granulation of the mass, the density of the raw products, as well,as the properties of the finished products were chocked. The results can be seen from table 2. Based on these results the mixing cycle, as mentioned in the table, was found. In table 3 the average weight by volume of the raw products is mentioned for JanuAry-February 1958, worked on centrifugal edge mills aij well as on mixing edge mills. 2) Production of' chamotte products. The dosaging of clay and chamotte is carried out by means of automatic weighing devices, of the slip volumetrically and also automatically with pneumatic control. From table 4 the influence of the duration of working on the granulation of the masses can be seen. In table 5 the weights by voluine of the unfinished pieces as well as the pro- perties of the products with durations of the working cycle of front 3-5 minutes are nentioned. In the production of chamotte Card 2/3 the optimum charge of the edge mills is 5oo kg. Working of Magnesito-Chromite and Chamatte Masses 131-58-6-3/14 in Centrifugal Edge Mills "Model 11511 Final conclusions: 1) The centrifugal edge mills "model 115" can be uned for the working of masses of magnosite-chromite as well as of chamotte products. It incroanes the output as well as the q:aality of the mass. 2) The use of centrifugal edge mills makes it posoible to completely automize the working process of the mauses. 3) It would be useful to organize the production of theav edge mills for the industry of refractories. TITLE: The Production of Unburnt Chrome-spinel Buckets PERIODICAL: Ogne,,PorYp 1959, Nr 9, PP 393 - 395 (USSR) A.BSTRACT: In 1959 -the Zaporozhtye Works for Refractories started the production of unburnt buckets after preliminary tests had yielded satisfactory results. For the teets two different kinds oT compositions were used, as may be seen from the table. They are described in detail in the following. The experimental buckets were tested in 230 t-ladles used for steel casting at a'temperatuze of 1580 - 16000C. Numerous ex- periments proved that.the unburnt chrome-spinel buckets are a perfect substitute ~or the burnt ones. Pressing of these buckets,is carried out by means of a-h . ydra-alic press of the tyj~e P-459 with a pressing power of 630 tons. The devices, and the press molds were designed by the designers of the works S. 3. Eyngornq V. V. Voinyanakiy, and At. V. Reznikova (see illustration and the subsequent description). The Card 1/2 uporawye Works of Refractories introduced the production The.Froduction of Unburnt Cbrome-spinel Buckets SOV/131-59-9-2/12 of unburnt chrome-spinel buckets warranting a safe operation of the stopping.devioe even under difficult conditions of steel casting.
