The diode (or triode) voltage is laid on the vertical deflection plates) the voltage of a calibration resistance which is series connected with the diode is con- ducted to the horizontal deflection plates. The electron bean traces on the screenthe VA-characteristic of the test instrument. The steepness of the VA-characteriatic i.s a measure for the quality of the diode or triode tested. Both the right and the left part of the VA-characteriistic.canbe checked by,the apparatus. When checking the right part-,!,of the VA-characteristio, i e, when the diode lets pass a current the a. ce voltage is conduoted to the test diode over the contacts of a commutator and over a variable resistance of Card 1/2 the gage tube 6Kh6S. When checking the left part of the SOV/119-59-2-9/17 Testing Apparatus for Semiconductor Diodes and Tri6des VA-characteristic the a. a. voltage is conducted over the gage tube 6Kh6S shunted by a variable resistance. The preoision resistance for measuring purposes is chosen in such a way that the voltage is much smaller during the work position of the diode than in.the opposite case. In this way an extension of tho left pa-"t of the VA-characteristic is achievod. The apparatus is fit for measuring point, contact and junction diodeso The apparatus is housed in a Hight metal case of'the dimensions 240 - 170 - 150 mm. Its weight is 2.5 kg,..The basi 'c circuit diagram and a photograph of the apparatus are given. There are 2,figures. Card 2/2 8 (2) AUTHOR: Davidovich, P. K., Engineer BOV/119-59-6-10/18 TITLE: Measurement of the Wearing- and Interruption Time of Electro- magnetic Relays (Izmereniye vremeni srabatyvaniya i otpuskaniya elektromagnittfth ' rele) PERIODICAL: Priborostroyeniye, 1959, Nr 6, p 23 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The measurement mentioned in the title is difficult, as it calls for the application of a loop oscillograph. The author reports on his patent (Ref 1), which allows a simple and quick measurement by the utilization of the stroboscopic effect. A figure shows the diagram of the measuring device consisting of a rotating contact releasing the relay and a measuring bridge, by which a rotating neon lamp is switched off as soon as the relay under investigation begins operating. When investigating the microstraoture by means of ordinary metal microscopes the aistribution of the components with an increase of the oraer of magnitude of 120 is observed. In order, however, to ascertain the appearance of the carboniferous powder, an order of magnitude in- oreasea to 350-400 is necessary. In some, single cases the investi- gation of the microstructure of oarboniferous substances aces not suffice for the determina.tion of the ocmditiona for the formatign of the investigatea compositions. In these o&ses it is useful to apply the method of measuring the microstrength of structural components. Measuring microstrength makes it possible to obtain a more exact structural analysis of the compositions; soot-tar, soot-coke after annealing and tempering. It is shown that the Card 1/'9! Various powdery materials are used in the manufacture of a brush and their properties have a considerable influence on its structurb. Study of the micro-struature and inicro-hardness of brushes oan give a good idea about the nature of the aonstituedto and about speoial features of brush manufacture. The procedure used for polishing brush surfaces for microscopic examination is d6soribed.. Magnifications of X 120 an 'd X 340 were wied and the most typical micro-structures of different kinds of brush material are shown photographically in Figs. 14., These figures are then explaineds petroleum coke (1) and plates of natural graphite (2) are visible in Fig.11 wood charcoal (1) is seen in Fig.2j the characteristics dendritic structure of copper (1) against a background of graphite (2) appears in Fig.31 and grains of bronze (1) with plates of natural graphite (2), are observed in Fig.4. Different types of strkoftre may occur even with a given formulation and method of brush maunfaeture. This is illustrated in Fig.7. in which the porous, monolithic mad normal structures are discerned. Sometimes examinations of niero-structure do not suffice to elucidate the conditions of formiLticit of brush eumponition, or to identify the constituents. In this cams, measurements of their micro- hardness in helpfal. The methed.of m"ing the micro-hardness determinations In then described. Some substances can be examined without special treatment of the surface; the treatment used in other cases in described. In order to investigate the influence of composition on micro-hardness, samples were made which included different proportions of graphite, carbon black, and binder. Each of the formulations was pressed at 1500 kg/cm2 and -then fired. The teet results, given in Table 2, show that the micro-hardness of the natural graphite in the various compositions remained unchanged, Ailat that of the carbon black altered considerably. The significance of the figures for the different formulatious is discussed. Mi6ro-hardness determinations facilitated a fuller analysis of brush structure. PERIODICAL: Zavoaslmya Laboratoriya, 1958, Vol. 2Jp, Nr 1, pp. 62-63 (USSR) ABSTRACT: In the introduction it is sa--",d that such in-vrestigations are of great importance for produoti.on. In this comiection it is mentioned that the alloys; copper-lead-tin, or copper-t-`Ln are characterized by phasse transfonnations with the formation of intermetallic -ohases already at not very high te=peratures. In order to obtain the necessary qualitative impression of these transformations the in- vestigations of microstructure as well as hardness tests were car- ried out for each component during heating. For this purpose a special device is used vihich was fitted onto the working table of the microscope or of the device used for testing ha-rdness. This device is used as follows: the sample (8x5x2C ma) is clamped be- tween two massive copper plates one of which is adjustable by means Card 1/2 of a screw. A current is fea onto these plates so that they form Investigation of the Ilicrostructure Phase Transformations 32-1-26/55 in Metal-Ceramic Systems During Heating a heater. As these plates are massive, heating takes place mainly in the sample which, aa to its diatnetor, is oormiderably moro narrow. Tempamture of the sample is measurcd by means of a therulo.- couple which is connected to the sample by means of a textolite bolt. In order to avoid undue heating of the objective of the micro3cope, this device is covered by a mice. plate which has an opening through which the sample way be watched. In this manner, among other things, the compressed samples of powders of copper, lead, tin, and graphite (which are used as iraterial for the pro- auction of electric brushes) I can be investigated microscopically at various temperatures, and the structural tran3formations as well as the follorring transition to the state of melting ran be ob- served. It was possible to carry out similar tests also in apparatus for the testing of hardness, Ther~ are I figure and 2 Slavic refer- ences. AVAILABLE: Library of Congress Card 2/2 1. A certain temperature can be fixed by a heating element and a contact ther- mometer. The test samples are prepared irt a press. The investi- gation method with a conical plastometer was already developed by P.A. Rcbinder (reference 1) in order to investigate the tan- gential stress. The conus penetrates into the test samples more and more slowly so that the penetration depth forms a certain function with the duration of the penetration (graphical repre- sentation). By a formula the tangential stress can be calculated. The electrork-pole transitions in the photo-elements were produced by thermal diffusion, accom- panied by the formation of a naturally transparent film on the L surf&'ce of the photo-elements (S.G. Zaychikov and T.V.Lysenko par- ticipated in developing this method). The investigations were carried out on a battery consisting of 28 series-connected sections, each of which contained parallel-connected elements glx-ed onto an insulated base. The sections were on a frame mounted on equipment which was orientated automatically -to face the Sun. The working . Soldered leads were available for measuring the characteristics of the individual secti-na. The electric parameters were measured by class 0.5 instruments; the temperature of the ambient air (in the shade) and of the objects of investigation were recorded by an automatic instrument. To clarify the influence of temperature on the characteristics of the individual photo-elements, a set-up was used for cooling the photo-elements down to +100C and heating to +1600C, whilst maintaining unchanged the natural illumination of the Sun. The changes in the characteristics of the batteiry and of its individual sections as a function of the intensity of the incident radiation during the day were recorded continuously, using a thermoelectric ictinometer with a galvanometer and an albedometer. Zxperiments were also made to assoss the possibility of concentrat- ing the light flux onto the surface of ph6toelactric transducers by means of mirrors, using for this purpose a battery on an insulated panel provided with hinged flat mirrors.
