The increase of the absolute cosinophil count is an indication of excitation of the
organism and a sign of mobilization of defence reactions of a general nature. In
such a state. the specific defence against exogenous actioloigical factors to either
absent or exhausted. In 240 psychotic patients, a total of 1,373 cell counts were
ca
rried out. In 54.4176 of the 113 schizophrenics, the eosinophil count was Increased,
which is new evidence that in the aetiology of schizophrenia an exogenous factor is
concerned. Among 15 maniacs the cosinophil count was increased in 13.3%; among
34 depressive patients in 14.71h. These data support the assumption that these two
forms of psychosis are of a functional nature. They were. therefore, real endo-
genous forms of psychosis. In psychopaths (33 cases) continuous cell counts showed
increased eosinophil counts in 33.3-21.27e. On the ground of continuous counts in
2D normal persons, the upper limit of normal was established at 200 cells per
cu.mm. The establishment of the absolute eosinophil count In mental affections,
acute, life -endangering psychoses - in which the aetiological significance of the
exogenous factor was earlier confirmed - led to the application of continuous blood
transfusions. In the Initial period of employment of this treatment, the authors lost
3 out of 6 cases of so-called fatal catatonia. but the experience gained In these
cases made it possible to save the other 3 - which -were at least as severe - by
means of daily blood transfusions. In these cases the so-called exhaustion stage.
whose duration has, up till now, been established at 2 to 4 days according to the
literature, lasted 10 to 22 days and, instead of death. recovery ensued. Together
with a deterioration of the genera. condition as a sign of exhaustion of the reactivity,
the cosinophil count is decreased. The cosinophil count is. therefore, a valuable
aid in the judgment of the patient's condition.

Experiences in cases ot acute copper sulphate poisoning in a Budapest hospital (2
fatal and 35 non-fatal) are described. In most cases the poison was taken by mouth.
accidentally or suicidally, while other cases were the reault of therapeutic use of
CUS04 in burns or oral poisoning with yellow phosphorus, as emetic or parenteral-
ly in the treatment of fistulae. The direct causes of death were corrosion of the
stomach wall with consequent haernorrhage (rare) or general poisoning and con-
sequent shock, dehydration (gastrointestinal disturbances). haernolytic anaemia,
renal failure caused by haemolyals. or primary damage to the kidneys, similar to

A report Is given on 2 outbreaks, involving 5 persons, of whom 1 died. The
responsible food in one outbreak was a home-made sausage prepared from the
stomach and various organs of a pig; in the other it was a hDme-canned food con-
taining beans and pork. The clinical symptoms were typical. Clinical diagnosis was
not verified by isolation of Cl. botulinum or demonstration of the toxin. The cause
of death in the fatal case was paralysis of the respiratory organs. The other -'

Six patients admitted to the emergency ward with total blindness due to quinine
poisoning recovered their normal vision after treatment with nicotinic acid. The
vasodilation produced by Mcotinic acid also restored normal hearing. The dosage
schedule was 25 mg. nicotinic acid i.m. 3 times a day, followed by 0.15-0.3 g.

Intracutaneous tuberculin injections are effective even in high dilution contrary
to subcutaneous, or intramuscular tuberculin, which give rise to reactions only
in much lower dilutions. To examine Ihe cause of this greater effectiveness.

tinin titres before and after intracutaneous adrenaline, physiological solution.

percentage, ds in the case of subcutaneous tuberculin. The same could be ob-

Transient and octosporous forms similar to PneUMOCYSti6 carinii were produced
by an unidentified species of saccharomyces as well as by Candida tropicalis.
Based on daita. from the literature and on personal experimental evidence, the au-
thor suggests that Pneumocystis carinli does not exist as a well-defined micro-
organism but that,it may be a non-specific form of several related species of

An investigation was carried out in 500 infants of up to 2 yr. of age. Candida albic-
ans was isolated in 144 cases (28.8%). Among 100 newborns the percentage with
positive findings was 19. The earliest positive culture was obtained on the 4th day
of life. It is concluded that it is unlikely that Candida infection was trammlitted
from the mother's birth canal during delivery. Among the older children those who
were ill for some other reason had a much higher proportion with positive findings,
and correspondingly those who had had antibiotic treatment also had a higher in-
cidence ofCandida iiq the throat washings than those who did not have antibiotic treat-
ment. There was no difference in the incidence of Candida infection among those
babies who had penicillin or streptomycin as compared with those who had the
broad-spectrum antibiotics. It is considered.that the 2 main factors in producing an t
incidence of about 5016 Candida infection in sick babies were the effect of the pri-
mary illness and the antibiotic treatment.

1,bstract 'The preparations of succinyl-asta (dichloride bis-succinyl-
choline) and uyorelv_~il have a number of advaht-at,,es -ovar
other curariform corxpounds. Their action sets on rapidly
and they are rapidly destroyed in the orpnism. They are
little toxic. During their application, histamine relase is
not being observed and fewer complications are noted. Bie
extent of their therapeutic action is greater. The dif-
ferences in the individual sensitivity of patients are ab-
sent. Their action upon the respiratory muscles is weaker
and therefore they do not require the application of intuba-
tion. In the organism, these substances are transformed into
choline and succinic acid. They are used in cases where
