TITLE-: Melting of charge Iron in a basic open-hearth furnace
FERIODICAL: Metallurg, no. 1, 1962, 21 - 23
TEXT: A technology was developed for the production of charge iron with
a carbon content less than 0.015% directly in an open-hearth furnace; the method
consisted in carbon oxidation by the combined effect of iron ore and compressed
air or oxygen blast to the pool..Experimental heats were made with oxygen and
compressed air blast. The charge consisted of cast iron and rejects of low-al-
loy electric steel; aluminum was added into the ladle. When blowing oxygen
through the pool the process of carbon oxidation from 0.64 to 0,00% lasted 1.30
minutes; blowing time was 13 minutes. When using compressed air, carbon oxida-
tion time was 1.47 minutes and blowing time was 12 minutes. The composition of
the finished metals was for case I (in %): o.oO c, 0.018 Mn, traces of SI;
0 .015 3; 0 .007 P; o. 14 Ni, traces of Cr and 0 .15 Cu; and f or case . 2: 0.014 C;

TOPIC TAGS: mathematic model, ocean dynamics, hydrodynamics, fluid density
ABSTRACT: A tentative mathematical model has been derived for defining the relationship be-
twcen the four-dimensionEd spectrum of velocity and that of pressure or density of sea water.
The model, analogous to systems of automatic control, defines an infinite ocean as dynamic
system whose properties are determined by linearized equations of hydrodynamics, accounting
for turbulent viscosity. The analog involves the pressure or density field as input, obtaining
as output the four-dimensional spectrum of the velocity field. Transfer functions of the sys-
tem are studied and its basic characteristica are shown to be verified by correct predictions

become feasible If a sufficient amount of research data is available and applied to the model.

There is no relation between V.ese points. It could be shovm
that for the feedinG of the accelerator sectionc a hi,-h-

suited. The probleii of the increase of the duration of the

ABSTRACT: The importance of mineral and thermal waters for all branches
of the national economy is stressed by the authors. The'
utilization in the USSR is almost insignificant in compari-
son with the reserves it possesses. Ilydrothermal reserves of
the USSR as a source of the thermal energy are practically
inexhaustible, as reported during the first All-Union con-
ference on geothermic researches, which took place in Mos-
cow in 1956. At present, research is being conducted by many
ministries and organizations, and the authors propose that
they be concentrated in the Einistry of Geology and of Con-
servation of Kineral Resources.

retain the existing work c1assification for repairs of artillery arma-
mant (suggested in "Teklinika i vooruzhaniye, no. 7, 1965) is not upheld
by the author. In -Whe author's opinion, the old division of repairs in
three classes (minor, average, major) does' not reflect well the time
element involved in repair work. A new classification chart is ~resent-
ed by the author whore the repairs are divided into two classes teurrent
and average) and then each class is subdivided into two time groups. The
so-called current repair class includes replacement of small parts and
regular reworking of parts and materials. The time required for this
current class of work is estimated up to 20 hours f or ~rifoles and up to
30 hours for artillery weapons and is included in the first time group

and 50 hours for artillery equipment. All other repairs over 40 or 50
hours are shown in tile second time group. The chari is also precise in
that repairs of the current first time group can be executed in the
regiment workshops, while the second time group of repairs can be done
in the workshops of larger military units. The same large shops can be
made responsible for repairs of the first averaSe tijae group. However,
still larger and better organized repair shops are needed for execution
.of average.repairs over 40 or 50 hours.

PURPOSE AND COVERAGICs The book describes the construetions of road building machines
of Soviet mailufacture (predominantly new models)., "d contains a brief review of the
constructions of foreign machines as well as a description of original model designs*
The main trends in the development of road building machinery are indicated. The
purpose of the book vait to help future engineers in the study of the construction of
such machinery and Is a textbook for students in courses of "Construction and Road
Building Machinery and Equipment" and "Automobile Roads" of polytechnic and
automobile-road institutes. It can alsobe used by engineers and technicians,,
mechanics, and constructors,, during the operation of road-building mchinerys It
is intended to serve as-a companion to the existing textbooks on the theory and de-

or capitalist military psychology and means and methods of psychologically cort-
ditioning troops will aid in giving a deeper understanding of how aggressive armed
forces are built, the wea'k and strong points :in their military and ethical training,
an d
-ov to use this infornation to improve the combat readiness of Soviet troops.
Field training should be stressed, particularly for tbe purpose of developing such
psychological qualities as boldness, decisiveness, and will power, and the physical
qualities of endurance, speed, dexterity, and stability. It was proposed to organize
at the Main Administration a special scientific center for investigating problems
concerning the ethical and psychological training of troops.

TITLE; Determination of the maximum speed of a supersonic
aircraft in horizontal flight
SOURCE: Moscow. Aviatsionnyy institut. Trudy. no.138. 1961.
Metody priblizhennykh raschetov i vybora parametrov pri
proyektirovanii samoletov. 5-11.
TEXT- Factors on which maximum velocity depends are
discussed briefly, and it is shown that the maximum speed is
achieved when relative structural weight, and specific weight of
engines and fuel (depending on length of flight) are at a
minimum. The various parameters in connection with the relative
structural weight are then discussed. Where structural strength
is maintaiiied, the relative structural weight increases with an
increase in the maximum Mach number. The effect of kinetic
heating on relative structural weight is also covered.
There are 6 f.igures and I Soviet-bloc reference.
