Title The Chemical Principles of Efferent Functions
of Celle and Tissues
Orig Pub Vestn. AN SSSR, 1957, 111o 11, 56-68
Abstract Ilia progress of the chemical mechanism of
contraction, especially the problem of enzy-
matic factors of efferent function, are
examined. After the author and K. 11. Lyubimova
discovered the adenosintriphosphatase activity
of myosin (1:1, it was shown that ATP [adenosine
triphosphatej acts upon 11 affecting a-chan;je
in the elastic properties of its tissues
and a decrease in the viscosity of K solutions.

This fact initiated the standpoint which
regards contraction to be a reaction of a
highly molecular structural base of a
muscle with low molecular metabolism products
forming an enzyme substrate coaplex. In the
course of studying this interaction, a second
protein of the retractile substanc.-, actin,
was discovered which forms a complex with X,
each component of which is incapable of con-
tracting separately. At present it has been
proven that ATP-ase activity is expressly in-
herent in M and does not depend upon the ad-
mixture of a special enzyme. A leading part
in the process of contraction is played by
the interaction of 116 and ATP but not byA"-. and

nucloic acid whereby "nucleomyosin" is con-
tracted by the action of "TP. It was es-
tablishbd that the presence o*L' Ca Ions is ro-
u1site for the interaction .of 1: and AM The
tUdy of various non-*muscular cells capable
~
'of contraction and shrinkage permits to as-
ewe that in these cells, as in muscle, an
interaction of the myosin-like protein, pos-
sessing a AT?-ase activity, and of ATP tal-res
place. This process Is apparently as uni-
versal as the processes of respiration and
fermentation. Thus, a protein, related to K,
with a ATP-ase activity which contracts
through the action of ATP (models covered
ifith glycerine) was detected in the cauda of

which have the ability to contract are
distinguished by a high AT?-ase activity. --

ficionoiee of the biological institutions of the AS. Above all
there are not enough rooms for now as well as for already exist-
ing institutes and laboratories. The Botanical, Z6ologicai and
Soil Institute urgently need experimental field bases. Working
cycles on the eleotron-microsoopic investigation of the funot-
ional structure of muscles were terminated as well as on the
radiographic investigation of collagen and on the determination
of the mechanisms of the biological influence of ultrasonics. The
gradual theory of the propagating oxcitation by the deceased
D. N. Nasonov was further developed. Treatises on the part
played by inner-secretory glands in the development of organisms
and on the resistance to cold of insects wore published.'Further

PERIODICAL; Tekhnika molodezhi, 1959, Nr 2j p 12 (I)SjR)
ABSTRACTs To the question asked by the editors of the periodical
"Tekhnika - molodezhill how he imagined future, V. Engeligardt
replied among other things; The Socialist order, the develop-
ment of which we are experiencing, will ask more aiiii more for
.new forms of control and utilization of natural.forcos. Thus,
a great importance is given't6 the investiLation of the
living matter. Biology which at present makes good use of the
achievements of alliod sciences - chemistry, physics etc -
will in its turn enrich the exact sciezices, even technology.
To explain my idea I will give two examples. In nature we
have got a device admirable for its perfection which servos
the conversion of energy, In the muscles the energy of chemi-
oal reactions in turned directly into mechanical work with
such efficiency that any heat engines or turbines designed
Card 1/2 by man are greatly surpassed. We know already th~; che-4-cal

prooensee taking place in the working muscle. Still unknown
is the physical change of protein. The protein transforms
the chemical energy to machafLical one. As soon as we knov
the physical oharaotor of these phoixomena there is no doubtl
we shall be able to give technology new principles of "chemo-
dynamic" engines, The other example is found in the world
of plants, At prosont we can only dream of the utilization of
guided thormonuoloar 7eaotiones Meanwhile, the whole life
on earth in based on the utilization of solar energy. We are
able to utilize only about 10~t of solar radiation by moans
of the most perfect photoelementa. A veoetable cell containing
ohlorophyllp howeverl utilizes 10C% of the 6olar enorgy
absorbed. One can easily imagine what gigantio, praotically
inexhaustiblep sources could be used for power economy if the
photosynthesis could be realized not only in the leaf of a
plant but in a technological process . There is I figure.

PERIODICALs UBpekhi khimiij 1959t Vol 28g Nr 9~ PP 1011-1035 (USSR)
ABSTRACTt This is an attompt to high-light some problems of modern
biochemistry in those fields to which the experts pay actually
the highest attention, and which are decisive for the further
development of biochemical sciences. The matter at issue are the
albumins and the nuoleic acids. The action of nucleic acids is
generally known and sufficientlt founded. This refers
particularly to the deso.Vribonucloic acid (DNA) which is to
transmit the features of heredity from generation to generation.
Any change of its structure causes changes in the progeny, which
are scientifically called mutations. Thus the unchangeableness
of DNA is the conditi= for a constancy of heredity. On the
other hand, mutations are the basis of changeability and thus
of evolution. It warrants a perfection of the organism by
natural or artificial selection. Under these circumstances the
chief problem of so-Called "molecular biologyu is to explain
the mechanisms of mutation, to determine its chemical nature,
Card 1/4 and thus to find the way of how to control it. The problem of

the chemical origin of the matations is ineoparably connected
with the problem of the synthesis of polynuplootide chkins of
the nucleic acids. In the last 5 Years the greatest achievements
In biochemistry are doubtlessly the results obtained in the
fiold of the fermentative synthesis of polynuclootideo.(Rof 9,
10). The most important problem to be solved in the
investigation of the nuoleio acids, will'be the determination
of their chemical structure. The scheme set up by Watson and
Crick (Ref 2) roughly represents the structure. The next step
will now be to establish the sequence of the nucleotide members
in the gigantic chain of the nucleia acid. The problems
mentioned directly lead to the problem concerning the mechanism
of the synthesis of albumins. This synthesis is controlled by.
the ribonuoleic acid (BHA), and takes place under itD vigorous
participation. Boience has hitherto succeeded in dividing
the process of synthesis of the albumin molecule into clearly
distinguished stages (Ref 11). These steps are the following:
1) Activation of the &ad~ds. 2) The activate& amino acids
combine in aa orderly manner. 3) A steric structure is built
up. But only the first stegsis.thesobject of clear chemical

albumin molecule is still a difficult task the determination
of the general amino-jc~id composition of any albumia has. alremy
become a routine work.~,(Ref 13). To thib day already a,remarkable
number of peptide-horiones have been investigated in regard.to
the arrangement of the pmino acids in their strucUre. *In some
cases even a complete identification in this arrugement could
be attained. Another groupp not lose important qad far more
comprebenuive, are the ferments. Tho scientists succeeded not
only to determine the oomyooitUn and the asquence of amino .
acid traces in their peptide-ohainp but also to ifind out the
probable contoura of the ferment oonfiguration. Even some
problems have been solved in regard to the connection between
the structure and the enzymatic, activity. It wa;; found that the
catalytical activity in:the ferment molecule is not - as a rule
determined by the entire chemical structure and the molecular
configuration. It seems that the catalytic activity is but
concentrated in a limited, and Qlearly defined section of the
Card 3/4 molocule(similar observations were made already with peptide

hormones). This section is decigive for the biological
properties of the albumin, and it is, therefore, devigunted
as the nucleus or the Ilaotive center". Biochemlatry, however,
deals also with a number of diseases. Thus it is poasible to
determine the nature of these diseases based on tho chemical
structure of molecules or on the interaction of chenioal
substances and on the chemioal reactions, caueed by fermentes
Functional biochemistry may be bonsidered a3 the prevalent trend
and.the ultimate aim in the problems of biochemistry. In other
vorda, it is the tendency of explaining by chemical methods
the nature, the mechanism, and the essence of certain physiological
~funotions. There are 6 figr=es, I table, and 24 ref are n6os,
4 of which are Soviet.

The authors generalize the notion of compact
spaces
and the Stone-Cech compictification of completely
regular spaces by. replacing the unit interval with an!
arbitrary topological space E. That is, X is E-compact if
there is no space Y containing X. as a dense subset such
that every continuous E-valued function on X can be
extended to Y. Then, given a space (which has a property
similar to complete reguh-irity) thcre exists an E-com-
actification. Unfortunately, lemma I on page 431 i,~i
