Some of these difficulties are the low viscosity water as compared toiturbine lubricants and the difficulties of machining materials itable for operation under conditions of high temperature and pressure. The main fficulty however is the viscosity of water which produces a very thin lubricating yer. The thickness of the layer permits additional friction by particles suspended .~the water. The authors propose the use of hydrostatic bearings which ensure a suf- ~ie~tly thick lubricating layer independent of lubricant viscosity. Such bearings e widely used in chemical machine building. These bearings are based on the desired inciples, but still have many disadvantages. Therefore bearings were developed and sted which are called "combination bearings" incorporating both hydrostatic and .'Card 1/3 UDC: bql!,M22. KC NR,AP6021719 .--7f drodynamic principles. Laboratory test data are given toget with verification ,6f .ese data under operational conditions. The bearing materiak: the main factor in termining optimum bearing construction. Bearing materials Save to satisfy the fol-_ ving requirements: 1. they must be highly resistant to corrosion and cavitation; they must be resistant to scratches and must have good ran-in characteristics at ith high and low speeds; 3. they must have good wear resistance under conditions of mi-fluid friction, and in particular must be vear-resistant with respect to abrasive .rticles in water. As a result of several years--of-operatton&i-em"rience, OF-j4Dw1- ,onze was chosen for the bearings, This material has. -certain-AU&advantages such as-. mparatively low run-in properties and a high coefficient of expansion. All bearing ,signs considered in this article are made of this material. Four different types of mbination bearings are tested. A diagram Is given shoving the temperature for the .ternal surface of the bearing inserts. Tests show that local heating of bearings is ,e main source of failure. Local thermal deformations affect the inserts and reduce loling for the heated zone. The continuation of this process causes binding between aft and bearing. Three of the four types of bearing designs tested suffer from ,ese defects, while the fourth type (aii, fiju_r"e_t'=oei~no _5e_FLiiiig_ Us --aels=gne that expansion due to heat both-under normal and under emergency operating condi- ,ons does not reduce the clearance between shaft and bearing. The bearing inserts .ve a complex shape and are made so that the support surface is composed of four .6cible elements. They are threaded in place, and in the event that fluid pressure 11s, the shaft rests on the two lower lobes. Under these conditions, a vedge-shW4. Card 2/3 0; ACC NRiAP6022729 ,earance is formed between the shaft d the section In which a hydrodynamic fting force is set up. This enables e shaft to withstand emergency con- tions of short duration. Thus the sults of the study show that It is ssible to develop a reliable water- bricated bearing for high-speed turbine stallations. The main problems for ese conditions are ensuring the opera- on of the bearing under conditions of terrupted lubrication,.and sufficient 1--Zubricant flow channel; 2--fastening bration resistance at high rpm. Of bolt; 3--expansion groove; 4--strain pin; I types of bearing designs studied, the 5--band; 6--regulating bolt; 7--0.5 r= ur-section lobe type is beat suited for i , depression; 8--groove; 9-elip surface weration under conditions of vater- A_rication in high-speed rotors.
