TEXT:The optical density of an emulsion layer is proportional to its
thickness. The shape of the spectral sensitivity curve does not depend
upon the thickness of the layer, but varies with the duration of the
second maturing of the emulsion. The spectral sensitivity is determined
not only by the absorption spectrum of the silver halide, but also by the
spectrum of the photo-effect of the microcrystallites of the emulsicn.

Description and critique of the stngle-sideband system from the
point of view of transmission technique. The advantages attributed to
single-sideband transmission are In the majority of publications an this
subject exaggerated. Authors emphasize the advantages and minknize;
or simply overlook the drawbacks. Usually, the advantages of sing!e-
-tWeband modulation are demonstrated by comparison with amplitude
modulation. In these compmisons, two essential errors are usually
concealed: 1) Modulation with a slnusoidal signal Is Incorrectly assumed
since ~such a signal seldom occurs when Information Is transmitted.
(The shape of modulating voltage assumed for calcula4lons has an
essential bearing on the results of comparison). 2) The modulation of
"Ittude with a full carrier wave and linear Actection does not fully
utilize the possibilities offered by the double sideband system and
It Is therefore Incorrect to lake It as a basis of comparison with
a single-sideband system, the potentialities of which are already, almost
cornpletely utilized. Moreover, the fact tends to be overlooked that-
there exist more efficient methods than the single-sideband modulation
for limiting the frequency band necmsary to transmit information 4nd
thrA the amplitude modulated signet can be produced In a very simiple
way and with a much Mither efficierviy than a sIngle-Adeband Aimal.

ABSTRACT: An.investigation was made of the effect of changes in
screen diameter on the resistance of a single layer solenoid coil. It
was shown that the reason.for the changes in this resistance is the
change of distribution of the electromagnetic field near the coil. The
dependence of the coil resistance and the quality of the coil on the
screen diameter was experimentally defined. The minimum reaistance
was found at the screen's.diameter, amounting to approximately 1.3 of
the coil diameter. The quality, of the coil (in consideration of losses
in the screen) remains approximately constant over a wide range of

changen of the screen diameter. The above results can be applied for
establishing optimal dimensions of the #croon and coil from the view-

ABSTRACT: Marine and continental Pliocene deposits are very
widespread in the Turkmenskaya SSR,- but they have not
been fully described in the published literature.
From the literature and from his own investigations,
the author uses the data to consider the distribution,
stratigraphy, and conditions of deposition~of the
Pliocene rocks. The oldest of these deposits (the
l6wer Pontian beds) occurs on the northern shore of
the Kara-Bogaz-Gol and generally consists of oolitic

poorly preserved fauna of (Dreissensia simplex~Barb., Didacna aff.
subincerta Andrus., Monodacna pseudocatillus Barb.. Proso =acna
littorali8 Eichw., and others. A large break occurs Fetween the
lower and upper Pliocene marine deposits. Tectonic movements pro-
duced an uplift over a large part of Turkmeniya, but in a number of
regions (Kara-Bogaz-Gol, the northern part of the Krasnovodsk Pen-
insula, the Chullmamedkum sandy region, and others) subsidence
occurred toward the end of Akchagyl time. Three stages are noted
in the development of the Akchagyl basseyn (basin). The first stage
is characterized by widespread transgression and a poor fossil
record (Avimactra 8ubcaspia Andrus, Cardium dombra Andrus, and
others). The secona -stage is characterized b~-I`ess extensive trans-
gression and by a rich fauna fAvimactra acutecarinata and others).
The third stage is distinguished by a strong freshening of the water
and an end to the sea. The author describes the marine Akchagyl
deposits and the marine Apsheron deposits (considerably less wide-
spread than the first) in Turkmeniya and provides lists of the

fossils found in them. The Apsheron rocks in the region of Sar
kamysh are transitional from marine to continental. Continental-
beds are widespread in the region of Turkmeniya, but they have been
studied so little that it is difficult to work out their strati-
graphy, the more so because the nomenclature of the continental
strata is very confused. The author proposes a nomenclature for
these continental formations in Turkmeniya (see Table). The Zaun-
guzlye formation of the Turkmeniya group occurs on the Zaunguzlye
Plateau and consists of red and green clays and micaceous sandstones
with layers and lenses of conglomerates. The visible thickness is
.80 m (the true thickness is apparently considerably greater). It is
considered to be lagoonal-continental-deltaic in origin. Fossils
are rare Cyprideis torosa littoralis Brady, Cyprinotus sp., and
Clessiniola Polejaevi Andrus). The leken formation, more than
156T _mthick is distinguished by a variable lithology and by very
few fossils 1plant remains, occasional ostracods). Besides at Chel-
eken, the formation is exposed in a number of anticlines in south-

western Turkmenia. The Karakum formation lies on top of the
Cheleken. The lower part of it is late Pliocene in age and consists
of deformed conglomerates (in distinction to the Quaternary rocks.

ABSTRACT: The oc_lurl-Lmce of Neogen sea sediments in the Trnns-CaspiRn
region is basically linked with the western regions of
KAzakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. On the whole, these
sediments represent the Viocene and Pliocene epoch. The
author gives a detailed description of the various geological
periods and comes to the conclusion that the history of the
development of Neogenic seas in the Trans-Cesplan region
proves that the Miocene transgression, beginning in the
"chokrak" period, reached its climax at the end of the Lower
Sarmatian stage and was succeeded by a rep-ression by the end
of the Middle Sarmatian stnge. '-Niis regression caused the
drying out of the Trans-Caspian region up to the beginning
of the Middle Pliocene epoch. The second Neogen transgression

disinterments of the Hipparion-fauna near the town Chimishliya
at the slopei of the Valya-Satuluy-river. In numerous defiles
a more than 70 m thick suite of sandy-loamy deposits is open-
ed up. A similar lithological composition( it is described for
the enumerated deposits) is proper to continental formations,
which were settled on lake-river, swamp, and subaerial con-
ditions. This is proved by finds of freshwater-, mainly ri-
ver-molluskg. To the lower part of the named mass the known
bone containing horizons of Chimishliya are bound (Ref .3), the
Card 1/3 age of this fauna is determined as meotic. By comparisorn and

interpolations the age of the above named bone layers is as-
certained to represent the middle or the beginning of the Up-
per Idootic. The ash-interlayer lies 2o-25 cm above the pack of
the bone containing lenses, Therefore these ashes moot prob-
ably belong to the Upper Meotic. Macroscopically this ash is
a very fine-grained, rough feeling, hardly cemented deposit.,
It is an isotropic transparent volcanic glass, corresponding
to a fine dust, often with very fine gas bubbles o,lo-o,ol mm
(83,36%) in size. The fragments are well preservedg without
traces of rolling. There occur pieces offine cylindric threads
which remind of "Pole's hair". Chemical and optical constants
of the glass are-given. The origin of the mentioned ashes is
brought into connection with the eruption of one of the east-
ern volcanoes of the inner zone of the Karpaty(Rof 2). where
lava flows of similar composition took place in the Meotic ti-
me. The material, thrown out, was transported by aerial ways
and deposed on the bottom of a shallow water basin. There
are 2 tables, and 3 references, which are Soviet.

ABSTRACT: Until very recently only a short notice (Reference 1) existed
on the occurrence of these deposits in this region. During geo-
logical investigations in 1957 the Akchaghylian depocits were
found much farther north of tho first place of findin,~, at Cape
Peschanyy. They have developed in a lar,:e reGion and moreover
their interrelations with other Ncojone horizons can be observed
(figure 1). These deposits are best developed near the settle-
ment of Kyzylkum. and from there they are traced until 6-7 km
farther to the north. They wore then disclosed still farther by
a borehole. Near the above-mentioned zettle.-.lezit they form a
plane terrace of several hundred m2- Their thickness amounts to
8 - lo m. These are dirty-white, grayish limestcnes with a fauna.
The basis of the lime--ma3s is covered by sands of U;)per Quater-
nary (novol-aspiyskiy) a-ce. Under them Lower Pontiac yello-g4sh
shell-o6litic lint;stoneo ( 4 M in thicknens) are depocited. From
