1030. DYMSHITS L. A. and SHULITS V.A. Pacd. Med. Inst., Leningrad. An
experr-m-e-n-FTh tCeatment of glaucoma in the out-patients
department of a general hospital (Russian text) OFTAL.Z.
1955, 1(21-26)
The authors report the results of a 4-year experiment of treating glaucoma in the
out-patients department of a general hospital. There were altogether about 350
patients (0.2% of the whole adult population of the district) on the register of the
department. A detailed analysis of 173 of them was carried out. 86% of the
patients were over 50 yr. of age. 54% of the cases studied had a history of severe
acute and chronic psychological trauma. In 51% of cases glaucoma was associated
with hypertensive disease. The number of patients with the compensated process
increased 4.5 times as the result of treatment in the out-patients departmert, and
the number of those with the decompensated process decreased nearly 3 times. A
sufficiently prolonged compensation of the intraocular pressure in glaucomatous
patients was achieved with the help of miotics, a general regimen, diet, bromides,
osmo-therapy. and tissue therapy under an invariably systematic control and ob-
servation. In the presence of a sharp disturbance of compensation of the intra-
ocular pressure, the authors recommend a timely surgical treatment, as the most
effective, Full compensation of the intraccular pressure. with preservation of the
function or its improvement, was observed in 55.2% of cases; sub-compensation
with preservation of the function was achieved In 31.6%; unsatisfactory results
were obtained in 13.2% of cases. Kulikova - Moscow
