TITLE: Positive reaction of mosquitoes and midges to repellents
SOURCE: AN KazSSR. Izvestiya- Seriya biologicheskikh nauk, no. 1. 1966j, 53-56
TOPIC TAGS: mosquito, entomology, insect control
ABSTRACT: On investigating the reaction of mosquitoes and midges to various chemical
irritants the author encountered a very intereating phenomnon. Vapors of dimethyl-
phthalate were blown into the test chamber of an olfactometer in order to obtain the
characteristic negative reaction. Instead of the expected negative effect, however,
a positive reaction was obeerveds Nearly all the mosquitoes and midges flew into the
chamber along with the current of air passing over this repellent, clearly preferring
this current. The experiments were performed most often with such mosquito species
as As. caspius, As* vexans, As~ cinereus, C. modestus, An. hyrcanus, and the midges
C. pulicarieu and G. puncticolliso Experiments with other repellents (repudin,
benzimint diethvltoluamide) also produced similar results# This positive reaction
was expressed most clearly when 0.1-0.2% suspensions of repellents in glycerin were
used. Such a duality of the effect of repellents if used in low concentrations
indicates the possible existence of a threshold effect above and below which the
same substances will display either repelling or attracting properties, This
L

finding is not of purely theoretical interest. It indicates the chemical closeness
between repellents and attractants - and this, in its turn, points to the feasibilit
of synthesizing a "pure" attractant displaying sufficient potency to attract
blood-suckirg insects for their subsequent destruction. (JPRS: 36,9321

-TITLE,- The dependence of specific electric resistivity of copper and

("Tr. Ural'skogo politekhn. in-tall, 1961, no. 114, 58 - 66)
I= The basic problem of the investigation was - studying the dependence
of electric resistivity (p) upon the deformation degree of the specimen at measure-
ments on currents of a w1do frequency range. The investigations were made with
-pare Cu (99.95%), trolley-bus cable (Cu with admixtures) and pure Ag (99-95). It
-is shown that the minimum on curve f(E) = (1/jo) - (d(VdE) (& is the degree of re-
lative deformation)- Is during compreesion connected with the properties of the
surface layer, whose structure in distorted by the atoms of admixtures Intruded
from the surrounding medium. The minimum of function f(C) for Ag appears only
at measurements on'superhigh frequencies; this can apparently be explained by
".,he fact that Ag is a more stable metal in respect to chemlcal'effects and in-

filtration of gases, than Cu. The medium has a strong effect on the behavior of
the function during compressionIbut has no marked effect on its behavior during
torsion. This is obviously connected with the degree of distortion of the struc-
ture at different deformation methods. However, the mechanism, as a result of
which the metal surface layer shows least resistance under certain deformation
conditions, has not been revealed.

PURPOSE AND COVERAGE: This book presents the phy 3ical bases of radio engineering
methods of inspecting the dimensions and properties of a product's material using
radi(nzavo,, radiospectroseopic,, and television principles. Diagrams and individual
olements of quality control equipment and the principles of their development are
described. It is intended for a wide reader audience of engineers and technicians
of the machine building and related industries, employeas of research instituteso
research laboratories.. plant laboratories,, designers,, researchers, technologists,,
and rationalizers who are familiar with the fundamentals of radio engineering and
working in quality control., defootoscopy, and automation of production processes.
The book can also be useful to.students in higher educational institutions and

Orig Pub: Klinich. meditsina, 1956, 34, No 12, 77-78.
Abstract: The author describes a case of centrally located
lLmg cancer in a ran 52 years o14. Recurring pains,
swelling and deformity of the largL. joints, and
later, of the small joints were noted. The pain
was acute on motion, but with preservation of active
and passive mobility. At a later stage) x-rays de-
monstrated periostial thickening in all the long
bones and multiple ossifying periostosis. The des-
cribed changes in the joints preceded the clinical
