COVERAGE: The present volume, the second of a series of' three, is a. collection of 27 articles by various authors preseating an historical account of the ex- ploration and economic development of the Soviet North. A small. part of the book is devoted to Arctic areas beyond the confines of the Soviet Union. The aira of the book is to contribute to an understanding of the physical geography, carthography, ethnography, and economy of the Soviet North through a historical survey of these factors. Trady, no. 159, 1964- ..Voprosy radiometeorologii (Problems in radiGmetiorology), 79-84 ,TOPIC TAGS: meteorology, Stormy meteorologic observation, statistic distribution ABSTRACT: This paper is concerned with the determination of probabilities of thund] storm occurence in a day, or in n* days in a given month, at one observation point or within circu)ar areas of a given radius. The analysis was developed on the basis ,of yearly statistical maps listing average observed numbers of days with thunderito .per month. If the occurenciba of thiuiderstorms during the summer are random events with a relatively small probability, then their distribution should be Poissonian. This hypothesis was tested on a 54 years aeries of meteorological observations in Le- ningrad and in an adjacent iLrea of a 300 km radius. The test criterion was the appro- ximate ecriality of the mathematical expevtation and of the dispersion of the etatis- ,tical series for Junst July, and August; and for the.whole season, in the area. The L-2605-66 ACC NRz AT6008127 test confirmed an approximate Poissonian distribution. Hence, the probability p(xi) of occurence, of xi days in a given month is given by p(x ai.e-/x (1) where a- I is the distribution parameter. Plots of theoretically expected and aotually observed number of days in a month with thunderstorms were drawn . Comparison confirmed the validity of the approach. The analysis wa3 then extended to include the probabilities of occurence ofat least one thunderstorm in a day, over areas enclosed by various radii, from 20 km (which was found to be the limit of obBervation by a conventional meteorological station) to 300 km. Probability curves are presented in tables and figures, as a function of the area radius. This information is given for three summer months, for Leningrad, Kalini: and for the First Volga district. For example, within an area pf a 250 km radius, the probability of at least one thunderstorm a,dav at Kalinin in August is 70%i at Lenin- grad, it is 50%- In the Volga distriott in Juli, this probability is much higher, 80% for only a 175 km radius areas Orig. art, has 3 figures, 7 formulas and 4 tables. The objeotiv6 nature of radar information and its instanteneous receipt are of great interest in weather forecasting. Radar ob- servations of cloudiness and precipitation zones were conducted in the summer of 1962 Horizontal pi-otures were obtained on the 1K0 indicator (- PPI radar scope) with full scale ranges of 30O.and tOO Ian every 15 minutes. Height/range radar echo picturos were obtained on the 1DV incU;cator (. E radar scope) in full scale ranges of 5/10, 10/20 and 20/40 kmt every hour. Twelve phosphoro-organic compounds were prepared by' the interaction of various alcohols with phosphorous pentoxide. Similar sulphur-organic compounds were also prepared by the inter- action of secondary higher aliphatic alcohols with sul furic acid.; Sodium salts of the compounds were made and tested as additives to the electrolyte. It was shourn that the sodium salts of mono- and di-hoptyl esters of phosphoric acid prevented pitting only in a 1 short interval of concentration of the order of 0.015 S/1. Pittir49 occurred if the concentration was increased. Additions of Card 1/2 L ;r I S/153/62/OO5/.-o6/oo8/oi5 Elimination of pitting ..... Z., Engineer TITLE: Answers to the Readers (Otvety chitatelyam) PERIODICAL: Kislorod, 1959, Nr 3, P 53 (USSR) ABSTRACT: Comrade Astaflyev from Stalino# Donbass, asked the following questions: 1) Is it possible to replace the bronze bushes of the cylinders of the I and the II stage of the oxygen compressor 2RK-1,5/220 by bushes of stainless steel? Answer: yes, by bushes aZ stainless steol of the type 1Kh16N9T. 2) Which kind of bronze must be used for the production of the above mentioned bushes and how can the load stability of the bronze bush be increased? Answer: stability may be increased by chromium plating. In this case the type of the bronze is not important, also lithium-silicon-nickel of the type KLOO-3L may be used. (K. S. Butkevich gave the answers). Comrade Sandrov from the Katav-Ivanovsk, Chelyabinsk Oblastt, asked the questions: 1) Is it possible to apply a filter with Card 1/3 a back-pressure valve to a tube which conducts the oxygen Answers to the Readers SOV/67-59-3-24/27 which has penetrated through the stuffing box of the pump for liquid oxygen into the condenser? Yes, this arrangement would be very useful, only the valve must be applied behind the filter in order to pi-event its pollution. 2) Must a unit of apparatus be inspected by the Goagortekhnadzor after a carried out modification? Answer: not this is not necessary. (V. M. Brodyanskiy gave the answers). Comrade Reznikov asked the questiont May the aupply of an enterprise with liquid oxygen De organized with a monthly consumption of 30,000 normal-O of gaseous oxygen? Which device may be used for the transportation and the gasification of liquid oxygen and where may the plan for a gasification plant be obtained? Answer: works with so-called oxygen consumption may be supplied with liquid oxygen by means of automobile tanks of the type ST-1300 with a volume of 1300 1, which is sufficient to cover the 24 hours' demand, daily from a near oxygen plant. The apparatus of the type UGZhK-1 which was woj~ked out by the Giprokislorod i& recommended for the oxygen gasification for industrial nurposes. 1-'ore accurate data on this plant are given. IL, 1964, 37-39 TOPIC TAGS: magnesium allay, magnesium base alloy, foundry technology, alloy cast- 'ing, metal filtration ABSTRAM A method of obtaining high-grade castings from magnesium alloys by filtering the liquid metal was investigated. The effectiveness of filtering liquid alloy HL5 a9d the effect of filtration on the chemical composition, mechanical opeFtiesllnd structure of the alloy were determined. The investigations showed P1 i that there are no flux and slag inclusions in the fractures. The author conclude$ ;that defects from flux and slag inclusions are reduced by a factor of 12-15, and final flow is reduced by a factor of 7-8. The optimum ratio between the total area iof grid openings and the total area of the cross section of the risers should be no less than 5:1. The recommended height of the filter is 60-80mm.
